Description
P. WILLO0X.. Gan for Liquid.
No. 207,926. v Patented Sept. 10.1818.
M r I I uveni e/r;
N-FETERS PHDYO-UTHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FENN WILLCOX, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR LIQUIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,926, dated September 10, 1878; application tiled January 3, 1878.
To all-whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,-I ENN WILLCOX, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in oil-cans or other liquid-vessels by means of which such vessels may be filled or their contents discharged with greater facility than heretofore, and certain difficulties and objections obviated and overcome.
The nature and character of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents an oil-can embodying my improvement, which consists in a nozzle and valve so constructed and arranged to operate in combination with the can as that the latter may be filled with oil through said nozzle without having to unsolder and resolder any portion of said can, or requiring an extra nozzle, as has been the case heretofore, and as that the contents may be discharged through the same attachment,.the can being hermetically sealed when the valve is closed, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the can with a nozzle, A, which is soldered or otherwise secured to the can B, and having a spout, a, projecting from its side, as shown, the liquid being poured through said nozzle into the can when it is being filled, and discharged through the spout ordinarily, or
through the nozzle, if desired, by removing the cap or cover 0, which screws into said nozzle, as shown, or is otherwise detachably connected to the nozzle, so that it can be applied with the valve, and will not yield when the valve is pressed upon its seat.
Through the center of the cap 0 is inserted a screw-threaded rod or valve-stem, d, carrying a valve, 6, the latter having its seat at the bottom of the nozzle A, which opens into the can, and being operated'i. 0., opened or closedby means of a suitable knob, 73, secured to the top end of said valve-stem d, all as shown and indicated. Thenozzle is also provided with an appropriate vent, b, either at the side above the valve, as indicated, or through the cap, as may be preferred. The flange s, which is shown at the bottom of the nozzle (though not essential) serves to facilitate and perfect its adjustment upon the can, and also adds to its strength, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- In combination with a can, a permanentlyattached nozzle, provided with a valve-seat, vent, and spout, a valve having a threaded stem, and a removable cap, threaded to receive, support, and guide the stem, and connected to the nozzle, as set forth, so as to retain its place when the valve is pressed upon its seat, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FENN WILLGOX.
Witnesses OLIVER DRAKE, P. J. INSLEE.
