Beit known that I, MARK J. BRIAR, of Orford, in the county of Benton, and State of Indiana, have invented a new -and improved Latch for Gates, &c.; and I do henby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication. i

Thrl present invention consists in a novel arrangement of a lever-latch for gates, &c. whereby a person can open the gate from either the inside or outside without reaching over the top of the same. AIn th'eaccompaying 5 plate of drawings my improved latch for gates is illustrated- Figure 1 being a front elevation of a gate having it applied thereto, and Figure 2 an elevation of a gate-post, showing the latch-lever hung thereon, and its connecting parts. Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. A, in the drawings, represents a gate, which, in form, shape, and size,- may be of any style vnow' in common use. i y 5 i I This gate, 4by one side, B, is hung on'hinges, C, to a' post, D, so as to vswing thereon in one direction, it .being held from moving inthe opposite directionby the stop-pin E to the other. gate-post F. G, a stud or pin, on one side of gate A, next to the post F, against which the latch-lever arrangement, to be 4no'w described, sets, and

holding the gate from being opened until raised therefrom, as will be hereinafter described. H, a loop or.clasp,

fixed to gatepost F on a horizontal planeI, an angular-shaped catch hung at one end to guide or clasp H, from which, passing down and thence up through the said clasp by its arm J, it is, at its upper end, hung through a link-piece, K, to a lever-handle, L, at one side of its fulcrnm-point M. This leverfhandleprojects 1 from both sides of the gateway, and plays through a loop or guide, N, suitably arranged therefor on the gatepost F, to which it'is hung. I

From the above description of my arrangement ofa gate-latch, it is plainly obvious that the .latcbcan be operated from both sides of the gate, whether outside or inside.

I claim as new, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent- A latch, for gates, dto., composed of latch-lever I, link-piece K, 'lever-handle L, arranged together substantially as and for the purposes described.
