BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent N0. 707,394, dated August 19, 1902. Application filed May 24, 1901. $erial. No. 61,763. (No model.)
IO it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to back-band buckles and securing device for trace-chains; and my object is to provide a device of the character specified which will be found to be reliably 15 efficient in the performance of its office, the
same being readily and adjustably secured in place upon the back-band.
The details of my invention will be clearly set forth in the following specificationand 2o illlustrated in the accompanying drawings, of
which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of my back band Fig. 3 isa longitudinalsection thereof. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one end of my back-band attachment, showing a portion thereof separated from parts with which it cooperates.
In order to conveniently refer to the several features of my invention and their cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed, of which-- 1 indicates the back-band of the usual or any preferred construction, to which I attach my adjustable trace-holding device, consisting of the end sections 2 and 3 and the bottom section 4, rigidly attached to said end sections or integrally formed therewith, as preferred.
I have shown the bottom section 4 in Fig. 3
as being an integral sleeve-like extension of the end sections 2 and 3, properly cast or otherwise extended around a reinforcing-rod, said sleeves being cut away or removed at their middle portion to provide a seat or journal to be received by an aperture in the upper end of the securing-hook 18. The upper ends of the end sections 2'and 3 are provided with suitable apertures, in which I rotatably 5o dispose the trunnions or journals 5, formed upon the back-band-engaging member 6, said member being provided with a longitudinally- 10, the lower end of which is pivotally secured to the extension 11, formed upon the section 4 or upon the outer face of the end section 2.
The extension 11 is provided with a recess,
as indicated by the numeral 12, adapted to receive the lower end of the detent 10, said detent being held in its operative position by a suitable rivet 13.
In order to dispose the upper free end of the detent l0, normally in contact with the end section 2, I extend the lower end of the detent sufficiently below the extended end 11, as indicated by the numeral 14, to permit it to be engaged by the spring 15, which is located in a suitable recess provided in the contiguous portion of the end section 2. In order that the detent may be readily grasped and withdrawn from its recess in the extension 9, I provide the handleor extended end 17. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be observed that the outer end of the detent 10 may be drawn outward entirely out of engagement with its recess in the extension 9, when the handle 8 may be grasped and the member 6 rotated in order that any slack in the back-band may be taken up or compensated for, as desired.
Having thus described the construction of my improved back-band attachment, the oporation or manner of using the same may be stated to be as follows: The back-band, of any suitable flexible material, may be provided in the usual manner with means for fastening the same upon the animal after'the band shall have been extended through the slot 7 provided in the rotatable member 6, and in order that the attachment may be secured at the desired point on the back-band the member 6 is rotated, which will cause the backband to be wound around it, thereby insuring that the device will be securely held in place and also that the slack in the back-band will be taken up by winding the band around said member.
Pivotally secured to the section l, preferably near the middle portion thereof, is the securing-hook, as indicated by thenumeral 18, said hook being adapted to engage the tug or trace-chain 19, as shown in Fig. 1.
While I' have described the-preferred construction which may be adopted in materializing my invention, it will be understood that I desire to comprehend in this application all substantial equivalents and substitutes which may be considered to fall fairly within the scope of my invention.
Believing that the advantages and construction of my improved back-band attachment have been made fully apparent from the foregoing specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, f urther reference to the details thereof is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The herein-described back-band attachment comprising the frame members 2, 3 and 4 rigidly secured together, a slotted member 6 rotatably mounted in the end members of said frame; an extension 9 formed on the end of said rotatable member and provided with a recess in its end, combined with an outwardlymovable detent adapted to engage said recess and means to normally hold the detent in place whereby when said detent is withdrawn the rotatable member 6 may be turned to release or tighten the back-band, all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
2.. The herein-described back-band attachment comprising the end sections 2 and3, and the member 4 rigidly connecting said end sections combined with the member 6 having the longitudinally-disposed slot rotatably mounted in said end sections and provided at one end with a handle portion 8 and at the opposite end with the recessed extension 9, and a spring-controlled detent normally held in engagement therewith whereby the upper end of said detent will rest in the recess provided in the extension 9 and may be manually withdrawn therefrom as desired, all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
3. A back-band attachment comprising a suitable frame-section combined witha slotted rotatable member 6, carried in the frame and having an operating-handle at one end extending outward from the frame and provided with the extension 9 upon the opposite end said extension 9 being provided with a recess in its extreme end, and a detent pivoted upon the outer side of the frame and having its free end extending into said recess combined with a suitable spring to hold the free end of the detentnormally inward whereby the slotted rotatable member 6 may be adj ustably secured by means of said handle and said cooperating detent, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
