(Application Bled Nov. 26, 1901.)
(N o M o d e MT1-3Dv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT STUART SPEIRS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SMOKING-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,268, dated August 19, 1902.
Application led November 26, 1901. Serial No. 83.782. (No model.) i
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT STUART SPEIRS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Tobaccol Pipe, of which the following is a speciiication.
The invention'relates to smoking-pipes, and
has for its object to provide a device of this class wherein the draft opening or orifice is in the bottom of the tobacco receptacle or bowl, with means whereby the clogging of the oriflee may be prevented or accumulations of packed tobacco at the orice may be readily removed without disturbing the charge, and
also to provide improved means for collecting moisture or saliva at a point out of contact with the charge in the bowl, for straining the smoke in its passage to the stem, and for removing accumulations and cleansing the saliva-receptacle.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention, the strainer and wiper being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the strainer and wiper detached.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The bowl l may be of any ordinary shape or contour, bored or otherwise hollowed out to form an upper tobacco-receptacle 2 and a subjacent saliva-receptable 3, which is open at its lower end and is preferably of even diameter throughout, said receptacles being connected at the center of the bottom of the tobacco-receptacle by a draft or smoke orifice 4, preferably of small diameter and particularly of less diameter than the saliva-receptacle. The stem-opening 5 is formed in the side of the saliva-receptable above its lower end, and the bottom of the saliva-receptacle is normally closed bya removable filling-plug 6.
The advantage of the above-described construction resides in the fact, rst, vthat the smoke-orifice being in the center of the botsecond, that the side or the stem-opening' is protected from, and therefore cannot be choked or clogged by, the tobacco, and, third, v
that moisture and saliva passing down the stem is accumulated in the saliva-receptacle below the plane of the stem-opening andout of the path of the smoke, and hence does not affect the quality of the smoke or interfere with the draft. l i The cleaning-plug by which the saliva-receptacle is closed preferably projects beyond the bottom of said receptacle to form a knob or grip by which it may be grasped to facilitate Lremoval and, preferably, as shown in the drawings, the bottom of the bowl is concaved o r the bottom of the saliva-receptacle is-inset to form a cavity 7 in which this knob or grip is located, so that the latter is arranged wholly within the contour of the bowl and above its lower extremity or edge, which, pref erably being flat, forms a suitable rest by which the pipe when not in use may be placed in an upright position upon a dat support.
Movably mounted in theusmoke-orifice is a wiper or stirrer 8, preferably capable of swinging or turning to traverse that portion of the bottom of the tobacco-receptacle which is adjacent to the orifice, and in practice it is preferred to provide this'wiper with a stem 9, extending downward through the orifice (so that its movement in the orifice may prevent the choking thereof) and attached to the filling or cleaning plug, whereby the turning of the wiper may be effected by turning the plug and whereby the axial or upward-andl cause the loosening of the tobacco adjacent to and in the orifice, and the turning movement of the plug will effect the removal of packed accumulations of tobacco adjacent to the orifice. Moreover, the saliva-receptacle in the path of the smoke in passing from the orifice to the stem may be provided with an absorbent or straining packing or filling 10, of which the construction may be varied. Preferably, however, this straining or filtering material is carried by the stem of the wiper and may consist of absorbent cotton (medicated, if desired) orbristles, which may be readily cleansed of accumulations when the plug has been removed from the bowl. In practice this straining or filtering material may extend upward on the stem sufficiently to lie adjacent to or in the smoke-orice, so that smoke in its passage to the stein passes directly therethrough.
Having described t-he invention, what is claimed isl. A tobacco-pipe having a tobacco-receptacle and a smoke-orice, and a movable wiper having its stem mounted in said orifice and having an arm arranged within the tobacco-receptacle to traverse the surface of its wa l.
