Filed May 28, 1931 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAVI fl j I 6707/ 5%0 A-TTOR-NEV Patented June 21, 1932 UNITED STATES DANIEL COPELL, 0F ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY SMOKING PIPE Application filed May 28,
This invention relates to smoking instruments and has for the primary object, the provision of means removable from the stem or neck of the smoking instrument for col- 5 lecting saliva and tobacco juices and to prevent the reentrance thereof into the bores of the smoking instrument and the mouthpiece thereof, thus obviating the discharge of such matter into the mouth of the smoker and per- 10 mits the device to be maintained in a highly sanitary condition due to the ease in which it may be removed, cleaned and replaced for further use. 7
Another object of this invention is the provision of a collecting receptacle arranged in the stem or neck of the smoking instrument and having nipples in communication with the bores of the stem or neck and the mouthpiece and arranged concentrically of the end walls and spaced from the other walls thereof, so that the saliva and tobacco juices can readily enter the receptacle and be prevented from re-entering. the bores, thereby maintaining the smoking instrument comparatively dry and free of foreign matter and the deliverance to the mouth of the smoker disagreeable tastes.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a removable cover for the receptacle whereby the latter may be easily cleansed of foreign matter and provides means to permit an absorbing cartridge to be placed in the receptacle should the employment of such be desirable.
v A still further object of this invention is p the provision of an attachment for smoking pipes or instruments which shall be simple, durable and efficient and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illus- 1931. Serial No. 540,781.
trating a smoking instrument constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view illustrating the bowl and the stem or neck of a pipe constructed to receive my invention.
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional View illustrating my invention applied to the mouthpiece of a smoking pipe with the cover in an opened position.
Figure 4: is a perspective view illustrating the collecting receptacle with the cover in opened position and illustrating a modifica tion of the arrangement of the nipples.
Figure 5 is a similar view illustrating another modification of my invention wherein the cover is shown hinged to one of the side walls of the receptacle. Y I
Figure 6 is a sectional View illustrating the form of receptacle shown in Figure 4 posi tioned in the neck or stem of the pipe.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a smoking pipe including a bowl 2 having formed integral therewith the neck or stem 3 and which is bored to form a chamber 4 and a passage 5 communicating the chamber 4L with the bowl 2.
A mouthpiece 6 is provided with a bore 7 communicating with a screw-threaded socket 8 at one end thereof to receive my invention.
A collectingreceptacle 9 has one side fully opened and closed by a hinged cover 10. As shown in Figures 1 and 3, the cover 10 is hinged to one of the end walls of the receptacle and is adapted when in a closed position to have tight frictionalcontact with the other walls of the receptacle. A screw threaded plug 11 is formed integral with one of the end walls of the receptacle 9 and is screw threaded for threaded connection with the socket 8 of the mouthpiece 6 and is provided with a bore 12 communicating with the bore 13 of a nipple 14 formed integral with said end wall and arranged concentrically thereof and spaced from the other walls of the receptacle. A nipple 15 is carried by the other end wall of the receptacle and arranged concentrically thereof and in alignment with the nipple 13 and extends outwardly of the receptacle and is tapered to fit within the bore 5 of the smoking pipe vented from re-entering the bores and 7 due to the arrangement of the nipples 13 and 15 and after use over a period of time, the
receptacle can be withdrawn from the chamber 1 and the cover opened-to permit the .removal of the collected foreign matter.
' Ifdes'ired' a cartridge of absorbent material may be. placed within the receptacle 9 *"wlien.the'cover'10 is in an opened position.
Referring to my modified formof inven- *cle 16 is constructed similar to the receptacle -9 and-has a hinged cover 17 for closing the --opened"side thereof and the cover is provided with marginal flanges 18 adapted to have fric- *cleivhen'in a clos'ed'position 'for the purpose of se'a-lingthe receptacle.
A nipple 19 is formed integral with one of "the/end walls and is located concentrically thereofand the bore of said nipple aligns with anopening in the mouthpiece while the other: end wall of the receptacle carries a nipple "20-similar in construction'to the nipple and islocated conce'ntricallyof the respective end ,wall'and in alignment with the nipple 19. *The nipple is removable from the receptacle' or the respective end wall thereof.
1 The smoking pipe 21 has a. chamber-'22 formed inthe neck or stem 23 thereof which "opens outwardly through one side wall of saidneck to permit the casing16 to be posi -tioned in and removed from the chamber 22 when'fdesiredr The neck or stem 23 is proa bore 25 communicating with the nipple mouthpiece being of the plug type fits within a socket formed within the end of the stem.
her 22 andmay'be ornamented in any suitable way or the'owners initials may be en- "gr'aved'or otherwiseapplied thereto so as to give the device an attractive appearance. {"Wheh it is desired to .clean the receptacle 16 "it-is only'necessary to swing the cover 17 and the receptacle is maintained within the thewall's thereof and if for some reason it is desired the receptacle 16 can be entirely re- 3- moved from the cl1ambe1'i22.
-tio'nal' contact with the walls'of the receptae 'vided with a bore 24 in communication with" "the-bowl of the smoking pipe 21 and also" --into-' an open position as shown in Figure 6- smoking-instrument-and will efliciently collect foreign matter, such as saliva and tobacco juices and prevent the re-entrance thereof either to the bowl of the smoking instrument or into the bore of the mouthpiece. Further it is to be noted that the device or attaclimentcan be'easily cleansed and'thereby maintained in a highly sanitary condition.
-'VVhile I have shown and described the prefered embodiment-of my invention, it will'be t on as shown'ln Figures 4 and 6,'the recepta understood that minor changesin construction, combination and arrangementofp'arts may be made without departing from ithe spirit and scope of my invention,"as claimed. Having thus described myinventi'omwhat I claim is: g V W 1.
