HENRY W. JACOBS, OF SHREVPORT, LOUISIANA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreveport, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to tobacco pipes and the object of the invention is the provision of means for cooling the smoke in its passage from the bowl to the mouthpiece and for collecting moisture. y
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of means for cooling the smoke from the bowl to the mouthpiece and means for holding a cooling element within the stummel.
A still further object 'of the invention is the provision of a pipe having a removable smoke cooling tube mounted therein and means for maintaining said tube cool throughout its length. c
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specic description 1s read in connection withY the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. i2 is.
a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cooling tube removed. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the bowl which is hollowed out, as is usual, at 2 to receive the tobacco and is provided with a central channel 3 in its bottom which communicates with a passage 4 extending through the stummel 5, which is provided with a plurality of apertures G through its length. The passage 4 forms aichamber of relatively large dialneter and is closed at its ends by apertured disks 7 and 8 which are threaded or otherwise secured in the ends of the stuminel. A suitable mouthpiece 9 is secured in the disk 8 and the lower end of the stummel is curved downwardly, as shown at 10, with the disk 7 therein closed by a plug 11.
llxtending from the disk 7 to the disk 8 and connected to both in .any suitable manner is a tube 12 made of any suitable material and provided with a lateral tubular extension 13 adapted -to communicate with the channel 3 in the bottom of the bowl. This tube is covered throughout its length Specification of Letters Patent. i

by a suitable absorbent fabric 14.4 Forming a part of the bowl is a cup lwhich is closed at its top by a plug 16 and is provided with a channel 17 leading to the' therein to Vgradually be absorbed by the fabric 14 on the rtube 12 the packing 19 being in contact with said fabric.
Any suitable cooling liquid may be used which willnot effect the aroma of the tobacco and as air is continually circulating around the fabric in the tube'the smoke in the tube is kept in a cool state and is drawn into the mouth without the biting sensation common in most smoking pipes. The end of the tube 1Q forms a saliva chamber which may be emptied by removing lthe plug 11. Any moisture in the smoke will be condensed upon the chilled inner surface of the tube and will flow downwardly to the end thereof, together with the coarser impurities which are collected by the moisture.
Having thusV described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A pipe comprising a bowl, an apertured stummel secured thereto having an enlarged channel, a, mouthpiece secured to the stuniinel, a smoke tube passing through the stummel free of the walls thereofv and connected to the bgwl and mouthpiece, and a foraininous wrapping on the smoke tube. 2. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stummel secured thereto having anl enlarged channel, a smoke tube mounted in the channel free of the walls thereof, a mouthpiece connected to the tube, means for connecting the smoke tube to the bowl, means for closing the end of the smoke'tube opposite from the mouthpiece, and a fabric wrapping for the tube. 3. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stummel secured thereto, a smoke tube mounted in the stuminel and free of the walls thereof, a mouthpiece connected to the tube, a foraminous wrapping for the tube, and means to keep said wrapping moistened. y'4. A pipe comprising a bowl, an aperturcd stummel .secured thereto and having an enlarged channel, a smoke tube mounted in thc channel free of the walls thereof, a fabric wrapping for said tube, amouthpiece communicating with the tube, a communieating connection between the tube and the jbowl, a liquid reservoirland means to gradually convey moisture t ric around the tube.
5. A pipe comprising a bowl having a erefrom to the fabstummel secured. thereto, a smoke tube 10 the stummel, an absorbent material carried in the tube and engaging the fabric around the smoke tube, and a mouthpiece connected to the smoke tube.
In testimony whereof 'I affix my signay ture in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. JACOBS.
