the tongue, so that the tendency willbe for the flanges to project slightly into the edges of it is desired to move the point to an angle it` is only necessary to press the same, and vin so doing the flanges on one side will tend to positively seat onto the metal of the point, while on the other side the friction of the parts will assist in maintaining the required friction. Should the point be turned in an opposite direction, a similar result would follow, owing to the opposite position or location of the retaining-lianges. The edges of the walls of the cross-grooves in the flanges serve as teeth, which take hold of the metal of the point slightly, and should the iron be adjusted repeatedly for any great length of time a Welldefined seat is formed in the metal of the point with which the slight edges or teeth will engage.
It has been found that the construction of an iron as above described will form a very secure joint, and one wherein the point is firmly held against all movement either lateral or pivotal, and that by setting the screwbolt the point can be moved and will be retained in its various positions of adjustment without the necessity of tightening the bolt. Each time the point is adjusted the taper of the flanges causes them to readily enter the relative soft metal of the point and to thereby increase the frictional engagement between the parts.
In construction I have found it desirable to form the holder with a shank having longitudinal ribs throughout the length thereof and on the lower end have formed a series of teeth G, with inclined and transverse edges,
"the transverse shoulders or edges being presented upward or toward the point of the iron. By driving the handpiece H onto the shank ot' the holder, a suitable opening having first been prepared, these teeth will serve to grasp the handpiece,which is conveniently of wood,
and prevent the same from being detached.
Other forms of connection may, however, be
, withoutdeparting from the nature and principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In asoldering-iron, the combination with a holder having separated arms at its ends each formed with penetrating edge flanges on its inner face, said flanges having crossgrooves therein and a boss formed on the outer face ot` one of the arms having a threaded interior, a point having atongue fashioned to fit between the arms and be engaged by the flanges at or near the outer edge of the tongue,`
and a screw-bolt passing through the arms and tongue having its end seated in the boss; substantially as described.
2. In a soldering-iron, the combination with a hold erhavin g separated arms at its end each provided with engaging flanges having a series oi cross-grooves the edges of the walls ol' which constitute teeth therein, a solderingpoint having a fiat-sided tongue, and means for securing the tongue between the flanges of the arms, substantially as described.
3. In asoldering-iron, the combination with aholder having separated arms at its ends each formed with holding edge flanges on its inner face, and av boss formed on the outer face of one of the arms having a threaded interior, a point having a tongue fashioned to fit between the arms and be engaged by the flanges at or near the outer edge of'lhe tongue, and a screw-bolt passing through the arms and tongue having its end sealed in the boss, substantially as described.
4. In asoldering-iron, the combination with a holder having separated arms formed with holding-flanges and a pivot secured between the flanges, of a handpiece into which the end `of the shank of the holder fits, and a series of teeth on the Opposite edges of' the end of the shank having inclined outer and straight upper edges for engaging the handpiece.
