Description

No.848,922. PATENTED APR.2,1907.

FORK.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented April 2, 1907.
Application filed July 31,1906. Serial No. 328,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRIOH H. POFAHL, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Vivian, in the county of Waseca, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to that class of tool-handles that are provided with means for adjusting the tool proper on the head of the handle, so as, for example, to practically ponvert a fork into a hook or a shovel into a It is the object of my invention to provide 'means for adjusting and securing a manurefork to its handle, not only at varying angles to suit circumstances, but so that the fork proper may be adjusted at or nearly at a right angle to the handle to form a manure-hook.
The nature of the invention has been so far disclosed in the foregoing statements as to need no further description at this point or time; but it will be set forth in detail in the following specification and pointed out with particularity in the subjoined claim, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, of which drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention, showing by dotted lines how the fork may be transformed into a dung-hook. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, partially in section. Fig. 3 is a face view of the several parts separated, but in the order in which they will be arranged on the adjusting bolt or pin. Fig. 4 is a view of the face of the jaw on the shank of the fork.
Similar figures of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, 5 designates a handle suitable for a dung-fork or dung-hook, provided at its forward or lower end with a sidetoothed jaw 6, composed of hard and tough steel and having a hole 7 formed through it in a transverse direction, internally screwthreaded to receive the quick-screw-threaded end 8, formed on one end of the bolt 9.
1O designates the fork or hook proper, the shank 11 of which is constructed as asidetoothed jaw 12 to cooperate with the jaw 6 invention.
and, like the latter, composed of hard and tough steel in order that the teeth of the two jaws may not slip on each other, and so bruise them as to render them worthless in the performance of their functions. The hole formed laterally through the jaw 12 is in form such as to suit it to fit on the bolt 9, with itsregistering side teeth 13 in close engagement with the side teeth 14 of the jaw 6. The bolt 9 is squared on its outer surface next adjacent to the quick-screw thread to fit the square hole formed through the end of a lever 15, acting as a wrench on the said bolt, and the outer end of the latter opposite to the quick-threaded end is provided with a finer screw-thread for the reception of the milled nut 16.
17 is a racked or toothed bar fixed in the side of the ferrule 18 on the lower end of the handle 5 and to which the jaw 6 is secured, the teeth on which bar are formed to receive the head of the wrench-lever 15 to hold the latter in place after it is turned up to tighten the jaw 6 on the opposite jaw 12, connected with the shank of the tool.
In use the fork proper, 10, will be adjusted on the bolt 9 at such angle with respect to the handle as may be desired, with the teeth of the aws in enga ement with each other. The wrench-lever wi then be slip ed on the squared part of the bolt and the mified nut 16 turned on the finely-screw-threaded end of the said bolt as firmly as can be with fingers and thumb. Next the wrench-lever will be operated to tighten the jaws upon each other through the intervention of the quick-thread on the bolt, when the handle of the wrench-lever will be engaged with the teeth of the bar 17, and finally the milled nut will be further tightened by the thumb and fingers if it is found that it can be so turned.
It is obvious that changes can be made in the form and arrangement of parts within the scope of mechanical skill without departing from the general nature or spirit of the What is claimed as the invention is- The combination with the socketed ferrule provided with the side-toothed jaw, of the tool having a shank provided with a cooperating side-toothed jaw, a bolt having a squared portion, and a quick-screw-threaded end to engage the first-mentioned jaw, a wrench-lever provided with a square hole to fit on the squareddportion of the bolt, the lat- In testimony whereof I affix my signature ter being provide with a finer screw-thread in presence of two Witnesses. on the end opposite that bearing the quickthread, a milled nut turned on the fine screw- 5 thread of the bolt, and a toothed bar fixed on Witnesses:
the ferrule to engage the handle of the E. L. COTE, wrench-lever. W. A. POFAHL.
