To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, ALEXANDER WALKER BEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to folding boxes such as are used for holding candy, soap, or simi lar articles; and it has for its object to provide asiinple, cheap, readily-constructed, and quickly-assembled device which will embody a top or upper portion partially or wholly closed, which will embody means for quickly fastening the edges of the box, and of which both the body and the cover may easily be folded into operative position when desired to be filled or used.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying myinvention. Fig.

In the practice of my invention I cut and preferably score a blank in the form shown in Fig. 2, which embodies a bottom portion A, an integral side B, a top portion 0, and an integral side 1), the latter all projecting from one side of v the bottom portion A. Upon the opposite side of the bottom A is an integral flange A, to which the side D is pasted. The bottom A and the sides B and D are each provided with alining end portions or flaps E and E respectively. The

flaps E and E of the sides B and D overlap, and the flap E, which is of the same width as the bottom A and substantially of the height of the box, laps in front of the flaps E and The top portion 0 is provided with end flaps F, tapered outwardly to form diagonal edges F and projecting beyond the line of the other flaps to form an extension or tongue F which I stamp or impress centrally at F to form on its under side a projection. I similarly stamp each end of the bottom portion A from its under surface upwardly at A to register with and engage the projection of the tongue F which tongue when the flap F is folded downwardly in front of the fiap E is bent at right angles to fold beneath the bottom portion A of the box, givingthe package effect shown in Fig. 1.

To the under surface of the bottom portion A of the blank I paste or permanently connect a base G, which projects beyond the bottom A peripherally thereof to form a continuous shoulder G. At the ends where the tongues F fold beneath the bottom A and engage the same the base G is left unsecured thereto, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The top portion 0 of the box is cut out longitudinally along fancifully-curved lines H to leave a shoulder or integral projecting portion H, forming a pretty and ornamental mouth or aperture for the top of the box, and the said top is also centrally slit along the fancifully-curved line H By leaving a por tion of the box-top uncut at the points H along the lines H hinges are formed and the cut-out portions of the top are not disconnected, but are left in the form of hinged lids I, which may be opened or closed at will.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 3 1 construct a box in precisely the same manner as previously described and in every respect identical in blank therewith, except that the top portion 0 of this modified form of box is cut out transversely in three places along elliptical lines J and centrally along a transverse line J to form three openings 1 for the reception of cakes of soap or the like, and by leaving portions of the top uncut at J I form two hinged lids K for each opening, which lids are turned downwardly to form vertical partitions at either side of the opening J which partitions may frictionally engage the bottom portion of the box or may be secured thereto, as desired.

The cover of the box I form in a manner to accord with and sustain the package effect of the main body. To this end I cut out a wardly of the sides M are extension sides N,

which in assembling fold over upon the inside, as shown in Fig. 6, forming in efiect a lining and making the sides of the coverdouble, so as to strengthen it and give lateral stiffness, as well as a smooth edge and continuous surface at every side and corner of the box. The sides M are provided with short flaps M, and the extension sides N are provided with long flaps N, joined to and continuous with the flaps M throughout a portion of the length thereof. The said flaps M and N overlap, and by reason of the partial integrality of the flaps M and N the flaps in a certain measure interlock as the long flaps N pass between the folds of the two flaps, as will be readily understood from Fig. 6. The top L is formed with tapered flaps L, equaling theheight of the cover, and with projecting tongues L which tongues when the flaps L are folded in front of the overlapping flaps M and N enter between the said flaps centrally of the edge of the cover, forming a complete package effect corresponding to that of the box, as indicated in Fig. 1.

The blank is sold to the consumer with the flap D pasted to the flange A, and in this form it is folded double like a carton and may be immediately opened and its flaps connected.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the advantages resultant from the use thereof will be manifest to all who are conversant with devices of this character.

I do not desire to confine myself to the exact formation of parts and construction of details herein shown and described, as I conceive my invention to be novel in its plan and broad in its scope.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,

1. A box comprising a foldable blank formed of a base, sides, and partially-closed top, all connected, and normally, in the unfolded condition, open at either end, and asupplemental base secured to the base of the foldable body and projecting beyond the same; and the upper members of the foldable body being provided at their normally open ends with flaps adapted to be interengaged.

2. A box comprising a blank formed of a bottom, two sides and a top portion comprising a partial closure, the said top portion being slitted centrally to form two hinged flaps which open outwardly and beingslitted outwardly of the said flaps along rounded or curved lines to leave the said flaps connected or integrally hinged at specific points, and flaps upon the several portions adapted to overlap, the said flaps being provided with means for securing or connecting the same.

3. A box comprising a foldable blank formed of a base, sides and partially-closed top, all connected, and normally, in the unfolded condition, open at either end, and a supplemental base secured to the base of the foldable body and projecting beyond the same; and the upper members of the foldable body being provided at their normally open ends with flaps adapted to be interengaged, the flaps of the top portion of the box being extended beyond the other flaps and adapted to be inserted between the base of the foldable portion and the supplemental base of the box.

4. A box comprising a blank formed of a bottom, two sides and a top portion comprising a partial closure, the said top portion being slitted integrally to form two hinged flaps and being slitted outwardly of the said flaps along'rounded or curved lines to leave the said flaps connected or integrally hinged at specific points, and flaps upon the several points adapted to overlap, the said flaps being provided with means for securing or connecting the same, and the flaps of the top or closure portion being extended beyond the other flaps; and a supplemental base secured to the bottom of the blank and connected thereto at specific points and adapted to receive the projecting portions of the flaps of the top portion between the bottom of the blank and the said supplemental base.

5. A box comprising a blank formed of a bottom, two sides, and a top portion comprising a closure; flaps upon the several portions adapted to overlap, the said flaps being provided with means for connecting the same; and a supplemental base secured to the bottom portion; the outermost of the said flaps being tapered and formed with a projecting tongue adapted to fold under the bottom of the box.

6. A box comprising a blank formed of a bottom, two sides, and a top portion comprising a closure; flaps upon the several portions adapted to overlap, the said flaps being provided with means for connecting the same; and a cover comprising a top portion formed with tapered flaps, sides, and side extensions adapted to be folded the latter over the former, and provided with flaps adapted to be interengaged,an"d the top flaps being provided with tongues adapted to engage between the side flaps the said cover being adapted to inclose the top of the box.

7. A box formed of a bottom portion and sides provided with flaps, the bottom flap being lapped in front of the side flaps, and a top portion provided with a tapered flap having a projected tongue formed with an indented projection, and the bottom being formed with a corresponding indentation; and a supplemental base secured to the bottom portion and unconnected therewith at the point of entrance of the tongue.

8. A box formed of a suitable body portion and a cover comprising a top portion formed with flaps, sides and side extensions, adapted to be folded, the latter over the former, and each provided with flaps, the flaps of the sides being relatively short and those of the side extensions relatively long and continu ous with the short flaps throughout a portion of the length thereof whereby when the cover is folded and the long flaps inserted between the opposite flaps the cover will be held in assembled position without other fastenings.

9. A box formed of a suitable body portion and a cover comprising a top portion formed 10. A box formed of a suitable body portion and a cover comprising a top portion formed with tapered flaps, sides, and side extensions adapted to be folded the latter over the former, and each provided with flaps adapted to be interengaged, the flaps of the sides and side extensions being partially connected at the end or corners of the box, and the top flaps being provided with tongues adapted to engage between the side flaps; the said cover being adapted to inclose the top of the box.

11. A box comprising a blank formed of a bottom, two sides and a top portion comprising a parallel closure, the said top portion be ing slitted centrally to form two hinged flaps which open outwardly and being slitted outwardly of the said flaps by discontinuous slits whereby to leave the said flaps connected or: integrally hinged at specific points and flaps upon the several parts adapted to overlap, the said flaps being provided with means for connecting the same.
