JAMES C. PENDER, OF CROWLEY, LOUISIANA.
COMBINED BABY CARRIAGE AND ROCKER.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,448, dated August 5, 1902.
Application filed April 26, 1902.
ence marked thereon, which form a part or;
this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined baby carriages.
and cribs; and it consists in a novel means whereby the carriage may bereadily converted into a crib by the simple manipulation of a lever mechanism.
The invention consists, further, invarious details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims. i
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, withthe letters of reference markedthereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings Figure l is a sideelevation of the device adjusted for use as a carriage. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device adjusted for use as a crib. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the device adjusted for use as a crib. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the frame of the carriage with the basket removed; and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the carriage, showing the adjusting means for holding the occupant in.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the legs of the crib, having suitable rockers A. Said legs are suitably braced and have a platform B, which is centrally apertured to receive an adjusting-screw D. Said platform has two slots 0 out on the arc of a circle, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive lugs E to guide the basket as it is rotated upon the platform and held by means of adjusting-screw in any. horizontal position desired. Mounted at two diagonally opposite corners of said platform are springcatches F, top plan views of which are shown in Fig. 4., which catches have a projecting por- Serial No. 104,855- (No model.)
tion F, whereby they may be depressed when it is desired to turn the basket in one direction or another. 'When the basket is held in the position shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, said catches project up along the longitudinal edges of the-floor of the basket and serve to hold the same insuch'position upon the platform of the frame.
Mounted on the bolts G, carried by the legs,
are the bars H, there being two bars of similar construction mounted on each side of the frame, which are pivoted together at H and are springs K, the'forward ends of which support an axle N, on which wheels M are mounted, and projecting from the rearends of the other set of bars are springs O, which support axles O, on whichthewheels Q are j ournaled.
Pivotally mounted in cross-pieces R on opposite sides of the frame is a round S, to which a'bar S is fastened, which in turn is pivoted to a' second bar T, and pivotally mounted on a pin P, carried by said bar T, is a handle P,the ends of'which are fastened to the shaft 0, "carrying the rear set of wheels, whereby as said handle is operated to-actuate the bars T and S the'wheels may be thrown into the positions shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to utilize the device as a carriage and when the handle is pushed in to assume the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the wheels are thrown into the positions illustrated above the rockers.
Mounted in the slots J (shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings) are rounds J, and adjustably held to said rounds J are the strips I, which are provided with elongated slots and are held to the bars J'by means of the adjusting-screws I. This device is provided for the purpose of holding the child in the basket and may be adjustable back and forth longitudinally upon the side pieces X of the basket.
From the foregoing it will be observed that by the mere manipulation of the handle by pushing it toward the basket and away from the same the device may be adjusted for use either as a crib or a carriage, and by the provision of the apparatus held to the basket to said link and adapted to be actuated by means is provided for holding the occupant in the basket, and the latter may be held at different positions horizontally upon the platform supported by the legs of the crib, thus making a combined crib and carriage which may be readily and quickly adjusted by any unskilled person.
Various details of construction and combinations of parts may be made in my invention other than those illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combined baby carriage and crib comprising a frame having legs, rockers at the bottom thereof, a basket mounted on the frame, bars pivoted together at their inner ends and having sliding pivotal connections with said legs, spring-strips carried by said bars, axles carried by the springs, and wheels mounted on the axles, a handle in connection with the bars, a link pivoted to one of the cross-pieces of the frame, the bar T pivoted said handle, whereby the axles carrying the wheels may be raised or lowered to throw the wheels above or below the rockers, as set forth.
2. A combined baby carriage and crib comprising a frame, legs thereon, rockers at the bottoms of said legs, a table, a basket secured thereto, bars pivoted together at their inner ends and having sliding pivotal connections with the legs, axles carried by said bars, a handle connected to the bars, a link pivoted to the cross-piece connected to the legs, a bar T, a pin carried thereby and about which said handle is bent, said bar T having pivotal connection with said link, said bars which have pivotal connection with each other and the legs adapted to buckle to hold the lower portions of the wheels above or below the rockers, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two'witnesses.
