CARL J. SUNDELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CONVERTIBLE HIGH 01mm.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, CARL J. SUNDEL a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofChicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible High Chairs-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a convertible article which may be used practically for the service of children, or if desired, so that it can be employed by them as atoy, or in play, and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a highly useful article, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable, and eflicient in operation, which can be used practically as a high chair or a baby carriage, from one form to another of which devices it can be readily and quickly converted; 'or if desired, it can be constructed, of proper size and material, and be used by children as a toy for dolls, in which event, the same construction and convertibility will be maintained.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.
In the accompanying drawings, which serve to illustrate an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the device with its parts arranged in the form of a high chair for babies having a table or platform mounted on the arm rests of said chair.
Fig. 2 is a front face view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation illustratingby continuous lines the position the parts will occupy when converted into a baby carriage, and by dotted lines, the position thereof in the form of a high chair.
Said view also showing bydotted lines a canopy supported on and over the carriage.
Fig. 4: is a sectional view taken on line of Fig. 3 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 5 is a side view of the upper portion of the device when formed into a baby carriage illustrating the canopy mounted as the e n; but show ng. portions of em side i Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 16, 1920.

responding parts throughout the different views of the drawings. Referring now more particularly to 1 to i inclusive of thedrawings, it will be seen and understood that the supporting .frame of the device includes two pairs of spaced apart supporting members, each pair consistingof two bars 10 and 11 crossed a little below their longitudinal middles and.-
pivotally connected together by means of a rod 12 which extends from one ofthe supporting members to the other. That portion of the bars 10 below their pivots 12 constitutes the. front legs of" the chair, and that portion of said bars 'above their pivots 12 constitutes a portion of the back of the device. That portion of the bars 11 located below their pivots 12 constitutes the rear legs of the device, while the upper portions of said bars constitute the upper front part of the supporting frame.
The parallel bars 10 are braced near their lower ends by means of a transverse rod or bar 13 and the bars 11 are similarly braced near their lower ends by means of a like connection. 1 1. As shown. in Figs. 1, 3 andi of the drawings. each of the legs or bars 10 and 11 is provided in its lower end withv an upwardly extended slot 15 which are for the reception, of axles 16. each of which consists of a flat body portion to fit in' said slots. and is provided at each of its ends with a cylin- 7 drical portion 17 on which the hubs of the wheels 18 are mounted for rotation and are held in place by means of cotter-pins 19 extend ed through suit b e tra sverse o )enin 's the portions 17 of the axles.
a 2ly1 secur i to its supporting her by means of a screw 22 and thumb nut 23 engaging the same, said screws bein located in the upper ends of said plates. he lower end of each of the plates 20 is held in place by means of an angular shaped collar 24 secured to each of the bars 10 and 11 near their lower ends, each of said collars being provided in its lower end with a slot to register with the slots and 21 in the bars 10 and 11 and tended outwardly from each of the side members 26 is a handle 28, by means of which the device can be propelled when it is used as a carriage. The side members 26 are transversely united just below the lower crosspicce 27 by means of a rod 29 on which are loosely mounted at their upperends a pair of bars 30 which are similarly mounted at their lower ends on a cross-rod 31 which is mounted at each of its ends in a bar 32 pivotally mounted on the lower portion of each of the supporting bars 11. Pivotally connected to each of the bars 32 at the inner end thereof is a link 34: which extends upwardly and .is pivotally secured at itsupper end to the inner surface of the supporting bar 10. adjacent thereto at a point near the lower end of the back of the device.
Pivotally secured at one of its ends to the upper portion of each. of the supporting members 10 and extended horizontally and forwardly therefrom is an arm rest rail 36 each of which is in telescopic engagement with another arm rest rail 37 each of which is pivotally mounted at its front end on the upper portion of one of the supporting members'll and is provided with. a longitudinally extended slot 38 to receive a screw 39 seated in the member 36 and having on its outer portion a thumb or set nut 40 to be used for fixing the telescopic members or rails 36 and 37 together in the desired position.
Located between the upper portion of the supporting members 11 at a suitable distance below the rails 37 thereon is the front portion of a platform all which is pivotally connected to the members 11 at its side edges H and has at the rear portion of each of its side edges a lateral projection 42 to engage a slotted link 43 one end of which is pivotally connected to the upper portion of each of the supporting members 10 and by preference by means of the pivot rod 25 which supports the back rest of the chair or device.
The opposite end of each of the links 43 is pivotally connected to one end of a link 44:
the supporting frame.
the other end of each of which is 'pivotally connected to the supporting members 11 above their pivots 12 and by preference on i the brace or tie-rod a5 which unites said supporting members.
Extended forwardly from each of the members 11 at points just below the pivot.
tray 19 is provided on its lower surface near each of its ends with a cleat 50 which extend transversely with respect to the table and serve to strengthen the same as well as to act as guides against the inner surfaces of the rails 37 as well as against the inner surfaces of the upper portions of the members 11 of Each of the supporting members 11 has longitudinally mounted. on its outer surface near its upper end a guide rod 51 each of which is formed at its upper end with a. rearwardly and downwardly inclined loop 52. These rods engage screw-eyes 53 one of which is located on the front portion of the table or tray 49 near its side ed es. as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
its ends to each of the members 11 at points 1 above the lower pivoted ends of the lmks 4% and is then passed around each of the links 4.7 and secured its other end to the pivot which unites the links 457 and +8 on each side of the device.
By this arrangement it is evident that the table or tray 49 when in its position shown. in Fig. 1 of the drawings will be held securely in place on the armrest rails 37 and upper ends of the member llby reason of the tension of the springs 54. and by reason of the engagement of the screw-eyes 53 with the loops of the guide-rods 51, yet in such a way that the table may be moved from the position indicated by continuous lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings and by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings to the position indicated by continuous lines in Fig. 3 where it will form a closure or foot rest for the front'end of the frame of the device consist= use, I provide each of the side rails 26 of the adjustable back rest or support at their upper ends and on their rear sru'faces with a rearwardly extended plate 55, each of which is rovided with a lon itudinal slot 56 hav- P 1:
mg a communicating opening 57 at about itsmiddle for the reception of headed projections 58 on each end of a roller 59 which is located transversely on the rear upper portion of the back rest between the plates and has secured thereto one end of the top 60 of a canopy, which top is provided at each of its sides with downwardly hanging portions 61 as is clearly shown in F igs. 5 and 6 of the drawings for closing the sides of the body of the carriage.
Pivoted at its ends on the projections 58 of the roller or bar 59 is a yoke 62, the upper portion 68 of which is adapted to extend transversely with respect to the upper portion of the back rest and to be supported in an upright-position so as to hold the top 60 of the canopy at a suitabledistance from said back rest. The side members of the yoke are provided with ofi'set portions 64: to rest on the inner portions of the handles 28 as is clearly shown in Figs. 3, 5 and 7 of the drawings. At a suitable distance from the front end of the top 60 of the canopy the same has secured to its lower surface a transverse bar 65 to each end of which is secured on its front and rear surfaces a plate 66, each of which is provided with an upright extension 67, thus forming a pair of parallel spaced apart extens ons at each of the ends of the, bar 65 which extend upwardly and outwardly therefrom, as is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
Pivotally mounted at one of its ends-between the extensions67 of each ofthe plates 66 is a supporting arm 68, thelower portion of each of which isprovided on its outer surface with 21 depending plate 69,
each of which has an openended slot 7O to engage the screws 39 carried by the arm rest rails 36 on which screws they may be securely fastened bv turning the thumb nuts 40 in the proper direction. v
When the canopy is in its operative position, it will be understood that the top edge of the table or tray 49 which forms a foot rest 'or' closure for the front end of the carriage body. At its front end the top 60 of the canopy is provided with a number of spaced apart straps 71 which may be secured at their lower ends to buttons 72 on the lower surface of the front part of the seat 41 the front end of which meets the lower end or edge of the table or tray 49 when the same is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drznvings.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that when the parts are positioned as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 ahigh chair will be provided, and that the table to convert the high chair into a carriage,
or tray 49 thereof will serve to hold the it is only necessary to loosen the thumb nuts 40 011 the screws 39, when it is obvious that the supporting members 10 and 11 may be separated at their upper" portions by pressing said portions from each other in.
which operation said parts will assumeapproximately the positions shown by continuous lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The back restjconi 'n'ising the side, rails 26 and interposed panel 28 may then be inclined downwardly from the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 to that indicated:
by continuous lines in said figure, in which position 1t w1ll be securely held by means -of the links 30 and 34: and the rocking bars 32. y
The table or tray 49 can now be changed from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that illustrated by continuous lines in Figs. 3
. and 5 ofthe drawings, where it will be held by reason of the tension of thesprings acting on the links'a'l' and 48 which unite the table or tray 49 to the brackets 46 of the supporting frain'e. To prevent the possibilityof the supporting members 10 and llbeing accidentally moved toward each other at their upper portions. it is obvious that the thumb nuts 40 can be tightened on. the screws 39 so as to hold the arm rest rails 36 and 37 in their extended positions as shown by continuous lines in Fig. 3 of' the drawings. It is manifest that should the child fall asleep Whenthe device is used as a high chair,'said device can be converted from the high chair form to the reclining or baby carriage form without disturbmg or uwaking the child.
- If desired, the canopy can be mounted on the supporting frame by placing the projections 58 on the roller or bar 59 in the slots 56 ofthe plates as shown in'Fig.
3 when it is evident that the yoke 62 can be placed 111 an uprightpositlon as shown in said figure when the top of the canopy can be extended over saidyo'ke. The supporting arms 68 can then be placed in the positrons shown in Fig. 6 when it is evident that the plates 69 on the lower ends of said arms can be placed in engagement with the screws 89 of the arm rest rails 37, and
held in an upright position thereon by,
the thumb nuts d0 on said position by fastening the straps 71 at their lower ends. to the buttons '72 on the seat n or floor of the carriagebody, The sides =1 of the canopy can then be extended on each side'of the carriage body as is evident.
The wheeled axles 16 can then be placed in the slots 15 and 21 in the lower ends of the supporting members 10 and 11 and the strengthening platesQO thereon respectively when it is obvious that the structure of the carriage will be completed.
As the canopy is detachably secured to the back rest of the device and also detachably'supported on the carriage body by means of the supporting arms 68 and is detachably connected to the platform, it is manifest that it can be easily removed,
when. the cloth of the canopy can be wound up on the roller or bar 59 into a compact form. I 7
