SKIRT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,172, dated August 5, 1902. Application tiled June 28,1901. Serial No. 66,396. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LLEWELLYN H. FLORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashley, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Skirt-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to skirt-supporters; and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective means for catching the upper part of a skirt at the back to prevent it from sagging, and also for holding down a shirt-waist, and having a structure which is 0f a strong and durable nature, easily applied and detached, and comparatively inexpensive in the cost of manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the supporter embodying two plates and means for clamping the same; Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the Supporter shown by Fig, 1,
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
The numeral 1 designates a safety-pin which is movably attached t0 the upper portion of the main member of the supporter, the latter having an upper bent loop 2 over the back bar of the pin, so as to leave the upper pinbar free for operation.
The plate 10 shown is doubled to form two members 1l and 12, the member 11 having right-angular teeth 11 projecting outwardly from the lower straight edge thereof and adapted to pass through a straight slot 13 at the lower extremity of the member 12. An L- shaped clamping-arm 14: is pivotally mounted on the plate 10 on the outer side of the outer member 12 by a rivet 15, passing through said arm at its elbow and extending through the members 11 and 12 of the plate 10. When the said clamping-arm is turned to the posi- 11 of the member 11 will be projected through the slot 13 of the member 12; but when said arm is in the dotted position the members will separate and the teeth will be drawn back, said operation being due to the fact that the plate '10 is constructed of spring metal. It will be seen that the member 12 of the plate 10 acts to clear the teeth when the clamping-arm is released from clamping position and'also protects the hands of the wearer of the device from injury when operating the same in connection with a shirtwaist and skirt.
In applying the device the outer member 12 is pressed back against the member 11 by the clamping-arm after the safety-pin is applied and before the skirt-band is secured over said plate. The safety-pin is caught in the center of the shirt-waist at the back, and the teeth of the plate are directed outwardly The skirt-band is then pulled over the plate and teeth and secured, the tension of the band causing the teeth to sink into the adjacent portion of the same, and thereby hold the skirt up in position and also pull the shirt-waist down in place.
The improved device may be suitably ornamented, and it will be seen that further modifications could be made in the form, size, proportions, and minor details without departing from the principle of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A device of the class set forth consisting of a doubled spring-metal plate forming two members, the rear member having outstanding teeth at the lower edge which are projectable through a slot at the lower edge of the front or outer member, a safety-pin attached to the upper edge of the said doubled plate,
and means for clamping the outer member' against the rear member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
LLEWELLYN II. FLORY.
