IMPROVED APPARATUS JFOB. MOVING BUILDINGS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN H; Moons, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement on Apparatus for Moving Buildings; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionoi' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the two connected truck-frames, with their appliances.
Figure 2 represents the adjustable reach or sand-board, detached from the truck-frames, in an inverted position, showing the arrangement forchanging the relative position of'said frames and the catch for the latch.

The nature of my improvement consists in so connecting the truck-frames that the weight placed upon them will hear more equally upon the trucks, and the direction changed with more facility and in a'smaller compass than by those now in use, together with'applianccs so arranged that the direction of the front set of trucks may be changed to the right or left, to the extent of a quarter of a circle,'and held in their position by means of a latch and catch, so that the rear trucks will follow automatically in their track.
To enable others to make and use'myimprovement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the frame A of timber, consisting of six longitudinal and four cross-pieces, framed and bolted firmly together. The centrepiece B is wider than the others, for the purpose of giving room for the end of the reach or sand-board G to rest upon. On a transverse line, near the centre of the frame, I make four bearings D I) D D, for the axles of the two trucks, which stand abreast, the ends of the axle-journals nearly meeting in the centre. I make the trucks E E shorter than others now in use, for the purpose of facilitating the change of direction, and connect two of the frames together by means of a reach or sand-board, O, its ends bearing upon the centre of the cross-pieces B B, and secured to them by a bolt fitted loosely in the centre, so that the frames AA may be moved to the right or left, as may be required. I make three holes, on a line at each end, for the purpose of placing the truck-frames nearer to or further from each other, depending upon the length of the building to be moved. On the centre of this reach I place the bolster F, upon which the sill of the building rests. By this arrangement, when the trucks are passing over uneven ground, the weight will bear equally upon both.
For the purpose of holding the truck-frames in position after changing'the direction, I attach a hinged latch, G, extending across the frame near the end, and under thereach O, with teeth out in it, between which the catch H on the under side enters, thereby securing the frame in any position to the right or left, to the extent of a quarter of a circle. In order to hold said latch in its position when turned up to receive the catch, I attach a sliding arm, I, through the end, weighted at both ends, so that the weight on the extended arm will hold it in place, and vice versa.
When I use my improved connected truck-frames, I place two ormorc of them in the desired position under the building, adjust the trucks for the required direction, and turn up the latch G. If the building is long, I increase the distance between the truck-frames, by removing the bolt and placing it through a hole nearer the end of the reach or sand-board" O, which is made of suflicicnt strength to sustain the weight. The holster F, being placed on its centre, gives it a slight flexibility, thereby obviating the jarring of the building while moving over pavements or rough ground. I
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hinged latch G, and the catch II, in combination with the reach or sand-board G and bolster F, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set torth.-
