LEE LONG, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO JOHN MOINTIRE, JR., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
SOUNDING TOY.
I SPECIFICATION fozming part of Letters Patent No. 705,939, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed September 30, 1901. Serial No. 77,038. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEE LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the sounding toys.
The object of the invention is to produce a toy of the character noted which will produce a succession of sounds as a ground-wheel is rotated, and in this connection it is noted that by a novel mechanism the sound is produced regardless of the direction of rotation of the ground-wheel. In this there is advantage, since a forward movement of the wheel will cause the production of a practically continuous sound.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a sounding toy in which thesounder embraces the ground-wheel, so that dislocation of the parts is prevented. Hence the toy will withstand an unusual amount of rough usage.
Finally, the object of the invention is to produce a sounding toy which will comprise few parts of comparatively inexpensive construction, proving strong and durable and eflicient and satisfactory in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction andin the arrangement and combination of parts, to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The drawing is a view in elevation, partly in section, showing the invention.
In this drawing, 1 indicates a wheel having a hub 2, which rotates on the axle 3, said axle being carried by the arms 4, extending to and joined to the handle 5. A ground-Wheel 6 is connected to the first-named wheel by the ribs or spokes 7 in order that motion of the groundwheel will be communicated to the wheel 1, said wheel being provided with the studs 9. The lower end of the handle has a V-shaped recess, in which the clapper b is pivoted, said clapper bearing against the walls of the recess, by which its movement is limited. In this construction the end of the clapper is forced down by the studs against the handle, and the spring action resulting causes it to contact with the successive studs. In this construction the sound will be produced when the wheel rotates in either direction, and this will be found a considerable advantage over the art.
It is noted that various changes in the proportions and other details of construction may be resorted to for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the scope of the claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is y In a sounding toy, a ground-wheel, a wheel encircled by the ground-wheel, and connected thereto, a handle, said handle having a V- shaped recess in its lower end, a clapper having one end pivoted in the V-shaped recess and adapted to bear against the walls of the recess for producing a spring action, the opposite end of the said clapper being bifurcat-ed to embrace the wheels and engage the studs, as and for the purpose described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature .in presence of two witnesses.
