PHILIP GAUSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-NIPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part pf Letters Patent No. 703,916, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed July 18, 1901. Serial No. 68,782. (No modeLl To ah whom it Hwy concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP GAUSS," a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle-Nipple, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in nipples for nursing-bottles; and the object is to provide a nipple having that portion of it designed for a mouthpiece non-collapsible, so that the opening or duct through it cannot become closed by external pressure or by vacuum occurring in the bottle.
I will describe a bottle-nipple embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a bottle-nipple embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The nipple comprises amouth portion 5 and. a portion 6, designed to be engaged over the neck of the bottle. This portion 6, therefore, is made sufficiently elastic to stretch over the bottle-neck The mouth option, however, is made practically hard or nc 1 1;cgl laps i blethat is, it is SUHTCIGDBIY hard to prevent its being pressed inward to close the opening or in a childs mouth. The duct 7 is made quite large and has a reduced portion with outlets 8. This duct, it will be observed, is straight from end to end, or, in other words, its walls have no longitudinal curves, and therefore the nipple may be readily cleaned by means of a brush or other similar device. The mouthpiece is made o al in cross-section, adapting it for a childs 'ir'i'outh, and, further, by making it in this form the walls at the approximately fiat sides are thinner than at the other sides, so as to give a proper degree of elasticity, but collapsing will be prevented by the thicker wall portions.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A nursing-bottle nipple having a mouthpiece provided with a straight cylindrical duct through it and reduced outlets, the said mouthpiece being oval in cross-section, the walls at the approximately flat sides being thinner than the walls at the other sides, whereby the thin walls will permit of slight yielding and the thicker walls will prevent collapsing.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PHILIP GAUSS.
