INVENTOH. H J2 wiwgcr W By WITNESSES A TTORNEYS U ITED STATESJ PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ADOLPHUS BOSTWICK, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE LAWRENCE COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, OREGON,
A CORPORATION OF OREGON.
HOPPLE OR PASTERN-HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,556, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed April 10, 1900.
To aZZ whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, HENRY ADQLPHUS Bosr- WICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washingtomha've invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iopples or Pastern-Halters and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, suchas will enable 0thers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements involved in the con struction of what is commonly designated a hopple or pastern-halter.
The object of my invention is to provide simple though reliably-efficient means whereby the bands or straps. designed to encircle the limb of thehorse or other animal to which my hopple is applied may be properly connectedwith each otherwithout the necessity of providing-the usual Dldesigned to cooperate with the buckle.
The advantages andconstruction of my invention will be made fully'apparent in the following specification and illustrated" in the accompanying drawings, it being understood that I shall describe and illustrate the pre-. ferred materialization and that I desire to comprehend the substantial equivalent thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to use. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail View of the complete hopple or pastern-halter.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating my invention complete and separated from the usual cooperating parts.
Briefly stated, myinvention consists in providing a buckle of peculiar construction,
40. whereby it will be fitted to serve the double purpose of a buckle and D betweenlthe hopple upon which it is secured and the connecting-chain commonly employed to join the two encirclingbandsof a hopple together;
For convenience of reference to the several details involved numerals will be employed, of which- 1 indicates a band designed to encircle the limb of an animal, preferably immediately with the link9,'itbeing understood that one above the pastern-joint, as is usual, said band swarm. 12,289. (It; model.)
beingconstructed preferably of leather and adapted to open upon one side, as indicated by the numeral 2. To one end of the encircling band thus or otherwise constructed I secure in any preferred way the inner end 3 of my improved buckle and D and also secure to the same end, preferably adjacent to the point where the buckle is secured, the anchoring device or keeper 4, it being understood that said keeper maybe formed of metal or leather, as preferred. To the other end of the band I secure in any desired manner, as by stitching or riveting, the securing-strap 5, which is designed to be engaged by the tongue of the buckle 6, by means of which the band 1 is securely fastened to the limb of the animal, as is common.
In order to obviate the necessity of providing a separate D,'- which is usuallysecured directly to the band 1 and {by means of which the hopplebands are-oonnected together, I
prefer to form upon myjbuckle;the preferably-integral extension 7, which is provided with an aperture 8,: designed to cooperate or more of said links may beemployed, asmay be found necessary,it being further understood that said linksare to be properly connected together by the swivel 10in order to prevent the same from becoming twisted and unnecessarily taut.
In Fig. 3 I have shown an enlarged view of my improved combined buckle and D, said view being substantially of full size, and by reference thereto it Will be clearly apparent that the frame of the buckle may be very cheaply constructed, inasmuch as it can be cast integral and afterward supplied with the usual tongue.
It will be readily understoodthat the two combined buckles and D may be connected by means of the ordinary links and swivel.
The inner face of theban'ds lmaybemade slightly convex, which can be readily accomplished by suitable packing between the pieces of leather forming said band, thereby preventing the edges of the band from chafing or otherwise causing injury.
My improved buckle may be very readily applied to use upon the hopple-bands as now 100 constructed by simply removing the form of buckle usually employed and replacing the same with my invention, it being understood that the usual D, designed to cooperate with the connecting-chain, may also be dispensed with.
Believing that the advantages and use of my improved buckle for hopples have been made clearly apparent from the foregoing specification, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, I will dispense with further reference to the details thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hopple, the encircling bands, and hopple-buckles secured thereto comprising a frame section and a tongue which passes through the free end of the encircling band, said frame-sections having formed upon their outer edges the Ds in which the ends of the links are made to catch, combinedwith the links which unite the bands, and the swivel placed midway between the bands, and which serves to unite the inner ends of the links, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a hopple, the combination of the encircling band open at one side with the ends abutting, a buckle secured thereabout and comprising a frame with integral extension having an aperture, an anchoring device 4, secured to'one end of said band, a strap secured to the other end of said band and entirely surrounding said band and engaging the tongue of the buckle, a link secured in the aperture of the extension, and a swivel connected to the said link, all substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflEiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
