SIDE-SADDLE GIRTH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,380, dated November 8, 1881. Application filed June 16, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM MONAUGHT, Jr., of Oartersville, in the county of Bartow and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Side-Saddle Girth, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved girth for side-saddles which can be tightened, as circumstances may require, by the rider withoutleaving the saddle.

.The invention consists in a girth composed of two sections, united at two adjoining ends showing it stretched.

by straps and buckles, whereas the other ends overlap each other, one end sliding on the other, and both are provided withpulleys, over which a rope or strap passes which is fastened to the end of the sliding band and terminates in a ring .Which is hooked on hooks on the fixed band above the pulley of this band.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved side-saddle girth, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same, showing the manner in which it is placed on the horse. 7 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The girth is composed of two broad bands or sections, A and B, of leather or webbing, one end, A, of the belt-A overlapping the end B of the beltB, and is loosely held on this end of the belt B by a flat loop or strap, 0, atthe end of the strap B. The belt B is provided at the opposite end with straps D, and the opposite end of the strap A is provided with corresponding buckles, E. A pulley, F, is attached to the end A of the belt A, and a like pulley, G, is

attached to the strapB a certain distance from A rope or round strap, H, is fastthe nd ened to theend A of the belt A, and passes around the pulley G, around the pulley F, and terminates in a ring, J provided with a loop or handle-ring, K. A series of hooks, L, are fastened to the belt B, above the pulley G. That part B of the belt B between the end B and the pulley G is preferably made of leather in case the belt is made of webbing.

The operation is as follows: The ling J is hooked on the lowest hook L, and the girth is passed around the horse, and is fastened by means of the strap D and buckles E, these straps and b'uckles being on the left side of the horse. If the girth becomes loosened-- which it generally does a short time after it has been fastened-the riderseizes the loop-K with the right hand, unhooks the ring J from the lowest hook L, and by pulling on the loop K brings the two pulleys F and G together that is, the girthis shortened and consequently tightened. The ring J is then hooked on one of the hooks L, and when the girth again becomes loosened it is tightened in the manner described.

Instead of securing the end of the rope H by means of the ring Jand hooks L, it may be secured in any other suitable manner.

, Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a saddle-girth, the combination, with the girth-sections A and B, of the pulleys F and G, and the rope H or equivalent, the ring J, and the' hooks L, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
