UNITED, STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JUDSON G. COFMAN, OF COMPTCHE, CALIFORNIA.
CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,383, dated July 22, 1902.
Application filed April 25, 1902.
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J UDSON G. COFMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Comptche, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Carrier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved carrier which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, and designed for various purposes for instance, for the use of persons carrying wood from the wood-pile to the house, for holding Wood in a neat pile in the kitchen or other place, or for binding, carrying, or elevating fodder, hay, straw, and other light materials.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, showing the bails or auxiliary handles in a lowermost position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, showing the bails extended. Fig. 3 is a like view of the same, showing the bails used for suspending the carrier on an elevating device; and Fig. 4. is an enlarged side elevation of one of the bearings for the auxiliary handles.
The improved carrier is provided with a framemade of strong wire or rods and consists, essentially, of two spaced side rails having straight bottom portions A and upwardly and outwardly inclined end portions A, and the side rails are rigidly connected with eachother by cross-bars A at the upper ends of the end portions, as is plainly illustrated in the drawings, the said cross-bars A forming handles for carrying the device about when loaded or not loaded.
On the end portions A are formed bearings A engaged by the trunnions B of bails or auxiliary handles B, extending between the end portions of the side rails and adapted to be swung either to the inside or to the out- Serial No. 104.638. (N0 model.)
side of the frame, as will be readily undergaging notches A formed on the bearings A as plainly indicated in Fig. 4. The bearings A are preferably in the shape of a loop formed in the corresponding end portions A of the side rails, it being understood that the trunnions B of the bails can be readily swung in place by bending the bails correspondingly when assembling the parts of the carrier. When the bails B are extendedto the inside of the frame, as shown in Fig. 3, then they may be connected with each other by arope C to securely tie fodder, hay, or a like material in position on the carrier.
In using the device for carrying wood-for instance, from a wood-pile to the housethe wood is placed transversely on the side rails to rest thereon and to allow of building a pile of wood in the frame, and when the carrier is loaded the operator can readily take hold of it by the cross-arms A to carry the carrier and its load to the desired destination. The wood in the piled state on the carrier can be left there and the whole device set on the kitchen-floor or directly into awood-box until the wood is used np.
When a person supports the carrier, one of the cross-bars A may be rested on the hip .of'
the person, while the other cross-bar is engaged by the hand, so as to support the carrier, leaving the other hand of the operator free.
The bails B when swung on' the outside of the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, form extension or auxiliary handles to allow of piling a large quantity ofmaterial, such as wood or hay, onto the carrier, the latter being then moved with its load from place to place by two persons having hold of the bails B. 7
It is understood that the bearings A are located between the ends of the end portions A of the rails, so that the bail sides bear against the cross-bars A when extended, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A carrier having a frame, consisting of spaced side rails having straight bottom portions, upwardly and outwardlyextending end portions, and cross-bars integrally connecting the side rails with each other at the ends, to form handles for the frame, as set forth.
2. A carrier, having a frame, consisting of spaced side rails having straight bottom portions, upwardly and outwardly extending end portions, cross-bars integrally connecting the side rails with each other at the ends, to form handles for the frame, and bails provided on the end portions of the side rails, as set forth.
3. A carrier, having a frame, consisting of spaced side rails having straight bottom portions, upwardly and outwardly extending end portions, cross-bars integrally connecting the side rails with each other at the ends, to form handles for the frame, and bails provided on the end portions of the side rails, adapted to swing between the side rails to an inner or outer position relative to the frame, as set forth.
4. A carrier, having a frame, consisting of spaced side rails having straight bottom portions, upwardly and outwardly extending end portions, cross-bars integrally connecting the side rails with each other at the ends, to form handles for the frame, bails provided on the end portions of the side rails, adapted to swing between the side rails to an inner or an outer position relative to the frame, and means on the bail-bearings, engaged by the bails, for holding the latter locked in a folded position, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
