Be it known that I, SUNDEL RABINOWITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Cleaning Chairs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved window-cleaning chair which is adapted to be firmly secured in the bottom of the window-frame, so as to afford ready and convenient means 'for the cleaning of the window-sash.

This invention is an improvement on that described and claimed in United States Letters Patent granted to me May 26, 1896,Serial No. 560,644, and is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of the chair and the bottom of the window-frame, to which the chair is attached, and showing also the.

method of connecting the chair with the window-frame; and Fig. 2, aperspective view of the chair detached from the frame.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made to Fig. 1, I have shown a cross-section of the bottom portion of an ordinary window-frame, and one side thereof is designated by the reference character a. This frame, or the sidesth'ereof, is provided with the usual beads or strips a a and a between which are spaces a and a", in which in practice the window sashes are mounted. The bottom ofthe win- I (low-frame, as shown in the drawings, consists of a main transverse central portion b, with which is connected a transverse head or strip 19 which corresponds with the front bead or strip a and secured to the front or inner side of the part b is a molding-strip b and rearwardly thereof is a ledge-plate b. The details of the construction of the window-frame, however, form no part of my invention, and are thus described only for the purpose of showing the preferred method of connecting my improved window-chair with said frame.

In the construction of my improved window-chair I'provide two parallel side bars 0,

which are connected rearwardly by transwith perforations or holes 61, adapted to receive the key pins or screws d and by means of this construction the bars (1 are made transversely adjustable and may be locked in any desired position.

Each of the bars 01 is provided at its outer end with a locking device 6, which consists of a metal plate or bar bent to form yoke-shaped recesses e 6 and 6 which open outwardly and which are adapted to receive or engage the beads a a and a at the opposite sides of the window-frame, and one of these looking devices (2 is shown in position in Fig. 1. The locking devices e are also provided at their inner or forward ends with laterallyform an additional means for securing thechair in position.

The parallel side barsc which constitute the bottom or main frame of the device are also provided rearwardly of thetransverselyadj nstable bars "d with a downwardly-curved portion 0 between which and the bars (1 are placed keepers f, which open forwardly and are adapted to hold a seat g, provided with downwardly-directed legs 9 having laterally-directed members 9 adapted to enter said keepers, andrearwardly of the downwardly-directed portions 0 of the side bars 0 are arranged other keepers 9, similar to the keepers f, which are adapted to support a seat 9 having downwardly-directed legs 9 the lower ends of which are provided with laterally directed members 9 which are adapted to enter the keepers g It will he understood that either of theseats g or 9 maybe used in either of the positions shown in Fig. 1 or that one seat may do for both positions, or two separate seats may be employed, and in Fig. 2 I have shown but one of these seats, so as not to confuse the drawing.

The parallel side bars 0 which constitute the bottom portion of the frame of a windowchair are preferably composed of two separate parts hinged together at h, and the rear or outer portions thereof are provided with upwardly-directed members h which are also connected by transverse plates ha, and pivotally connected with or hinged to the upper portion of the downwardly-directed members 7L2, as shown at h, are side bars 7L5, composed of two separate members hinged together at 7L6 and the forward ends of which are hinged to the bottom side bars 0 at h In order to secure my improved windowcleaning chair in a window, the said chair is placed in said window, as shown in Fig. 1, and in this position the downwardly-curved portions 0 and the cross-bar at the front or inner ends of the bars a overlap the molding-strip 17 as shown in said figure. The yokeshaped portion 0 incloses the transverse bead or strip b and the rearward portions of the side bars 0 conform to and rest upon the outer or rearward portions of the bottom of the window-frame, as clearly shown in said figure. In this position of the parts Ihe bars d are adjusted outwardly, so as to force the locking device 6 into engagement with the beads or strips a a and a at the opposite sides of the windowframe, and when this engagement is completed the said bars are locked in position by the pins or screws (1 The device is then securely connected with the window-frame and cannot be detached therefrom without moving the bars at inwardly, which operation will disconnect the locking device from the sides of the window-frame.

The outer portions of the bottom bars 0 and the upwardly-directed members h ,connected therewith, and the side bars 72, form a guard to prevent accident if at any time the occupant of the chair should fall backwardly or outwardly, and by reason of the fact that these parts are hinged at 77, and h the same may be folded inwardly or forwardly whenever desired, and by this means the chair or window attachment may be put into compact form for packing or storing when not in use.

In Fig. l of the drawings I have shown the locking device e in full lines as arranged horizontally and transversely across the side of the window-frame; but, if desired, this looking device and the one on the opposite side, which is not shown in this figure, may be arranged as shown in dotted lines, in which the outer end or ends thereof are raised, so as to increase the leverage and securely hold the chair in the window-frame if at any time a considerable weight should be thrown on the outermost part thereof or on the outer end of the bars 0 and their attachment.

The entire device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A window chair comprising a main frame adapted to engage the transverse members of the bottom of the window frame, transversely-adj ustable bars mounted in said main frame and provided with looking devices adapted to engage the beads or strips of the sides of the window-frame, ahinged member connected with the outer end of the main frame and adapted to be held in an upright position, side rods hinged to the top portion of the said hinged member and to the sides of the main frame and composed of separate parts hinged together, and a seat detachably connected with the main frame, substantially as shown and described.

2. A window chair comprising a main frame adapted to engage the transverse members of the bottom of the window frame transversely-ad j ustable bars mounted in said main frame and provided with locking devices adapted to engage the beads or strips of the sides of the window-frame, a hinged member connected with the outer end of the main frame and adapted to be held in an upright position, side rods hinged to the top portion of said hinged member and to the sides of the main frame and composed of separate parts hinged together, and a seat detachably connected with the main frame, said seat being so placed as to cover the transversely-adjustable bars, substantially as shown and described.
