1). RIVERS and EDWARD BEACH, of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms; and we do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlegs, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The object of our invention is to provide a firearm that is simple and cheaply constructed and with a minimum number of parts, that is capable of being easily taken apart, and is convenient and eflieient in operation.

In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a partial longitudinal section and a partial side elevation, with one of the side plates removed, of the frame and operative parts of the firearm. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section taken on the line of the securing-bolt. Fig. 3 is a section of the barrel close to the rear'end.

Referring to the reference characters in a more particular description, 1 indicates the barrel, which is provided on the under side at and adjacent to the rear end with grooves a a. These grooves are adapted to receive the upper edges of the sheet-metal side plates 2 2 of the frame. The frame consists of the said side plates and a middle skeleton-framepiece 3 of an irregular form and including also the trigger-guard, and all secured together by On the under side of the barrel a little forward of the rear end is secured, preferably by a dovetailed joint, as shown, the barrel-retaining lug 4, which fits as to its front and rear sides into a notch or recess in the frame part 3 and as to its right and left sides between side plates 2 2. The thumb-screw 5 passes up from the under side of the frame and engages with the retaininglug 4 and when tightened firmly secures the barrel to the frame.

The fore stock 18, which is securedto the barrel, is provided with a tenon 18, which enters the opening between the side plates 2 at the front end of the frame. The barrel may be readily separated from the frame by loosening the screw 5, when the retaining projection 4draws out of its socket in the direction of the length of the screw and the tenon 18 of the fore stock draws out in the same direction. It may be noted at this point that the arrangement of the grooves a a in the under side of the barrel, engaging with the side plates of the frame for a considerable extent lengthwise, serves to hold the frame and barrel in perfect alincment, and the same, together with the retaining-lug, engaging in the socket in the frame, serves when the screw5 is tightened to unite the parts practically as one piece. The rear stock-19 is secured to the frame by a bolt 20, which engages in a screw-threaded opening in the rear-end of the intermediate frame part 3.

What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination in a firearm of the barrel portion having grooves in its under side, a frame having side plates engaging in said grooves and meansfor securing the barrel portion and frame together, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination in a take-down firearm 0f the barrel having grooves in its underside and adepeuding lug or projection of a. frame having side plates, the upper edges of which are received in said grooves, and having a recess to receive said lug or projection and means for securing the barrel and frame together, substantially as set forth.
