Description

G. W. OILLEY. FASTENING DEVICE FOR GUN BARRELS.
(No Model.)
Patented Apr. 14,1891.
PT .i.
INVENTU UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. OILLEY, OF NORVVIOH, CONNECTICUT.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR GUN-BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,448, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed November 28,1890. Serial No. 372,933. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
"Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CILLEY, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for Gun-Barrels, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. Y
My invention relates to the method of fastening a gun-barrel to its breech-frame; and it consists in fitting into the frame at one side of the gun a jaw or clamp adapted to enter into a transverse groove made in the barrel and to be drawn into place by a clamping-screw operated from the other side of the gun. This mechanism and arrangement is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a part of a gun, showing a part of my attachment. Fig. 2 is a side view similar to Fig. l, but taken fromthe other side. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line m to of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig.4 is a view in cross-section showing the clamping-jaw slightly modified. Fig. 5 is a plan showing a part of the gun and indicating by dotted lines the shape of the modified clamp of Fig. at.
In the drawings I have shown only such parts of a gun as are necessary to illustrate my invention, and need not describe the gun in detail, as my device will apply equally well to a great many styles of guns.
The barrel is indicated by A and the breechframe by B. The breech end of the barrel B is coned, as indicated by dotted lines at a a, Figs. 1 and 5, and fits into a corresponding recess made in the breech-frame.
clamping-piece O is drawn in, so that it will hold the barrel firmly in place. Vhen it is desired to remove the barrel, the screw D is so turned as to force the clamping-piece O outward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. This causes the clamping-piece C to withdraw from the recess in the gun-barrel, and thus leave itin condition to be removed from the frame. The clamping-piece O is held from turning and also limited in its motion by the screw K, which fits in a groove made in the clamping-piece for that purpose. The screw D is held longitudinally in place by the pin E, Fig. 3, which fits into an annular groove made in it, as shown.
In Figs. 4 and 5 the clamping-piece is modified in shape, it being provided with an arm C extending upward through a vertical groove made in the side of the barrel, as shown. It also has a short projection G extending below its center, which forms, in connection with the screw K, a guide for keeping it in place and limiting its movement. The front side of the arm 0 is beveled, as shown at c c, Fig. 5, so that as the clampingpiece is drawn in it will act as a wedge to force the gun-barrel back firmly into its place.
I claim In a gun, the combination of a barrel having a cone-shaped breech end, said breech end adapted to fit into a recess in the breechframe and having a lateral groove for receivinga clamping-piece, as described, said clamping-piece so located in the said breech-frame that it can engage with and hold the barrel in place, and a screw by which the said clamp is operated, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 24th day of November, A. D. 1890.
' GEORGE \V. CILLEY.
