SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,390, dated July 8, 1902. Application filed December 80, 1901. Serial No. 87,785. (No model- 1'0 all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALESSANDRO GIOVANNI BATTISTA Sounna subject of the King of Italy, and aresident of Liege, Belgium, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Shaping Mustaches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved device for shaping mustaches; and its object is to enable mustaches to be shaped without employing either hot irons or cosmetics.

My invention consists, broadly, of a comb which is bent to suit the shape of the upper lip, to which it is to be applied, and a metal plate or plates adapted to be pressed against said comb,the comb being first passed through the mustache and the plate or plates then caused to press against the latter.

In order that my invention may be readily understood, I make reference to the accompanying drawings, showing three forms of my improved device, and in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are a rear, front, and side elevation, respectively, of one form of my improved device, the plate hereinafter referred to being shown closed on or in contact with the comb. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the same, but with the plate opened. Figs. 5 and 6 are front and side elevations, respectively, of an alternative construction of my invention, the plates being closed or pressed against the comb. Fig. 7 is also a side elevation of the same, but showing the plates open; and Figs. 8 and 9 show in side elevation afurther alternative construction of my invention, the former showing the plates closed and the latter open.

Referring to the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5, 1 is the comb, which is bent or otherwise shaped to fit the upper lip, on which it is to be used, on which comb a plate 2 is fixed, to the lower end of which a handle 3 is attached. Said plate 2 is bent at right angles at its top end, so as to form an extension 4, to the extremityof which a lever 5, having a handle 6, is pivotallyattaohed. Said lever is formed at about its center with an arm 7, on the free end of which two lugs 8, carrying a plate 9, are pivotally attached. Said plate 9 is shaped to conform with the comb 1 when said plate isclosed against it, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, and is provided with a suitable lining-such, for example, as leather.

To use the device described, the comb l is held by grasping the handle 3. The other handle, 6, is raised, and the plate 9 is slightly inclined relatively to thearm 7, about as shown in Fig. 4. The comb is next passed through the mustache from below, said mustache having been previously made wet or damp, and the handle 6 is lowered to almost its original position, so that on account of the inclination of the plate 9 to the arm 7 the said plate will be brought near and parallel to the comb. If the mustache is now in its proper position, the handle is lowered or depressed to as near as possible its lowermost position, which will cause the plate 9 to press the mustache with more or less considerable force against the comb. The effect of this, if my improved device he maintained in position for a sufficient length of time, is that the mustache will be pressed into the desired shape and will retain same for a more or less lengthy period.

When removing the device from the mustache, it is only necessary to place, say, the index-finger ot' the left hand, which latter grasps the handle 3 under the center part 20 of the plate 9, and then to raise the handle 6, so that the plate 9 will be drawn away from the mustache without disturbing the latter, after which the comb is carefully withdrawn.

Figs. 5, 6, and 7 illustrate an alternative construction of myinvention, the plate 9,hereinbefore described, being replaced by two plates 10, which are hingedly connected togetherat 11. Said plates are normally pressed against the comb 1 by a lever 12, which is fixed on abarrel or equivalent 13, containing a spiral spring, which spring presses the lever forward against the plates. On the spindle on which the barrel 13 is carried'I fix a wire 14, forming catches or equivalents 15, projecting under each of the plates 10, the

arrangement being such that when the free 5 end of the lever 12 is depressed the movement of said lever will remove the pressure off the plates 10 and 11 will cause the catches 15 to open the plates 10, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 7. The spring within the barrel 13 may be wound up or unwound by a pin or screw 16 and the force exerted by said spring thus regulated.

In the further alternative construction of my invention illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9 the plates 10 are normally pressed against the comb 1 by a lever 17, which is provided with a spring 18, which latter presses against the handle or equivalent with which the comb 1 is provided. I also fix books 19 on the spindle which carries the lever, said hooks en gaging with the under sideof the plates 10, the arrangement being such that when the free end of the lever 17 is depressed the hooks 19 will open the plates 10, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 9.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a comb shaped to fit the upper lip, a correspondingly-shaped plate movably carried by the front of said comb and adapted normally for engagement therewith,

a depending handle secured to the lower portion of the comb, means engaging the front of the said plate for actuating said plate out of engagement with the comb, means for operating said last-named means, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the type set forth, the combination of a comb shaped to fit the upper lip, and carrying a depending handle, a correspondingly-shaped plate, an extension carried by the front of the comb at its upper portion, a lever pivotally secured to the extremity of said extension and carrying a handle at its lower portion, a right-angular arm secured centrally of the lever and having its free end pivotally secured to the front face of the plate, the plate having a downward movement, substantially as described.
