Application February 8, 1945, f' Serial: Nor-,576349 This invention relates to'an improved eyelash cuiden-and one of its objects is to provide a lever with an arched upper jaw xed thereonandlpar- 'allel guides, almovable jaw which engagesthe parallel guides and is held thereby to parallel motion toward and away from the xed jaw, and a vsecond lever which is pivoted on the rst'lever, but lwhich is provided with -a cam arranged to shift the movable jaw toward and away from the xed jaw, so that the movable jaw is not rocked against the iiXed jaw and bruising or shearing of the engaged eyelash hairs is thereby avoided.
Another object oi-the invention is to provide afyielding eyelash engaging jaw face of resilient rubber or other similar material,,whchismoulded or vulcanized upon the movable jaw, soyasto completely enclose the material of which the frame of the movable jaw is made.
Another object oi the invention is to provide anew and improved eyelash -curling device having a movable jaw frame member which can-be removed from the device to renew or replacethe resilient rubber jaw face member whenthelatter becomes worn.
Still another object of the invention is to provide anew and improved eyelash curling device which is simple and easy to operate `and which is safe to use.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the followingspecication, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 isa front elevation. Y

AThe vforming ridge LBA is somewhat `wider thanftheedge :l IA, andthe latter `,is adaptedft-o.- engage .ridge lAlmidwaykgf. its sides,..s o.that the.. eyelash hairsdisposed between the edge I-I;A.and.the resilient Vridge MIA rwill be bentsandcm thereby becurled,,by1 clamping the ,tvvajavvss uponi the-eyelash hairs.
The H.lower Ajaw L8 :is `fertilizaci by A.the slightly cur-vedcam arm IIIAfof-the lever J4, anda Wire yoke .2.0 loosely couples Isaid cam arm `IIIA tothe lower cross (bar .I 8D ...of said movable lower yjaw I t?, rthis fyoke 2;0 I being I termed with terminal eyes 20A and 20B, which encircle the cross bar I8D, and slidably couple the cam arm ITA to the movable jaw I8.
When the lever I4 is moved so that the lower end of the same will approach the lower end of the lever 5, the cam arm I'IA yof the lever I4 will slide or ride against the cross bar ISD of the yoke 29, thereby moving the movable or lower Y jaw I3 away from the fixed or upper jaw I I.
Due to the fact that the lever I4 does not have any direct or indirect pivotal connection with the movable jaw I3, the latter is not rocked across the curling edge of the xed upper jaw II, when said movable jaw I8 is forced against eyelash hairs placed between the two jaws, when the two jaws are pressed together to curl the eyelash hairs, or when pressure is released to move the said jaw apart.
As a result of this arrangement the danger of bruising the eyelash hairs, or of partly or wholly shearing them, as a result of the rocking of the movable jaw I8 on the frame of the xed jaw I I, is eliminated.
When the movable jaw I8 is first released from the pressure placed upon it, the cam arm I'IA will have a slight lost motion on said movable jaw, which will aid in the gradual release of the engaged eyelash hairs from the curling pressure placed upon them, and tend to prevent a sudden pull upon these hairs, during the separating aotion of the two jaws, due to the temporary adhesion of the hairs to the rubber.
Moreover, the amount of pressure applied and the rate at which the pressure is applied upon thek eyelash hairs, can be modified by the angle and length of the cam .arm ITA or by the curvature of it.
It is noted that the bearing ears or lugs I2 and I3 of the levers 5 and I4 pivotally connect said levers to each other in side-by-side relation, and that this avoids the shearing relation between the two levers, which is in current use, and which results in frequent pinching of interferinghair strands or portions of the iiesh of the user.
This side-by-side pivotal mounting provides normally open clearances or gaps between the levers at the points of pivotal movement, and only the cam arm I1A projects over the opposite lever 5, and this arm is disposed yat an angle of almost ninety degrees, at the point it crosses the opposite lever 5, or moves between the guides 8 and 9, and at this point is spaced laterally and inwardly from these guides, so as to avoid any shearing relation between related parts. At the point of contacting or sliding engagement with the lower cross bar of the frame loop which forms the movable lower jaw I8, the engagement is at right angles to the lower cross bar.
One of the features of the invention is that the entire movable lower jaw frame member I8 can be removed as a single unit 'from the device whenever it is desired to replace or renew the resilient rubber jaw face member I9 when the latter becomes worn. Thisl is accomplished by removing loop I1 of cam arm IIA from yoke 2|). The entire movable lower jaw frame member I8, due to the springy material from which itv is made, can then be snapped or forced out of guides 8A and 9A. The resilience or springiness of said guides 8A and 9A assist in the removal'or insertion of said jaw frame member from the frame of the ilXed jaw member.
It is understood that various changes in the construction of the details shown, in their combination and arrangement, and in the choice of materials used, may be made, within th-e scope oi the invention, as dened by the claims hereof.
Having described the invention, it is claimed:
1.
