The present invention is generally concerned with hair curling devices and more particularly relates to a functionally and structurally improved eyelash curler for enhancing the appearance of a persons eyes.
The invention has as an object the provision of an improved eyelash curler having manipulatable bell crank levers for actuating a slidably guided movable jaw towards a complementary clamping portion of a companion stationary jaw.
The invention has as a further object the provision of a novel eyelash curler comprising a stationary jaw having depending slotted sides adapted to guide a slidable jaw operatively connected to control means comprising opposed pivoted bell crank levers having depending manipulatable arms retaining depending portions of a spring for normally holding the slidable jaw retracted.
The invention has as another object the provision of a movable jaw having a substantially spheroidal shaped upper marginal portion carrying a grooved or channeled resilient member having a striation cooperating with a beveled face of the stationary jaw for appropriately crimping eyelashes.
The invention has as another object the provision of a movably guided jaw having an upper portionprovided with an expanded portion comprising a plurality of outwardly extending lugs, the adjacent lugs of the plurality extending in opposite directions and the alternate lugs'thereof extending in the same direction, the lugs forming a seat for appropriately retaining a channeled resilient member having a longitudinal disposed striation and including spaced sides cooperating to closelystraddle and firmly embrace the upper portion of the movable jaw.
Other aspects, objects, advantages and features of the invention are in' part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. The present invention will be best understood from the following discussion of the several typical structural embodiments, references being had to the accompanying drawing in which:-
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the eyelash curler according to one form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 but on a larger scale. Fig. 4.- is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Fig. 1. Fig, 5 is a reduced perspective view of the eyelash curler shown in Fig, 1. Fig. 6 is an exploded view in perspective showing the upper arms of the bell crank levers disconnected from the movable jaw. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view of a modified movable jaw, partly illustrated in section. Fig. 8 is a section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7. In the drawing, the eyelash curler according to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive is generally designated in and includes a frame or casing H comprising a forwardly disposed wall l2 having rearwardly extending spaced sides l3 each terminating in a vertically disposed channel member it each having an inwardly facing vertical groove or channel 15 for slidably guiding the marginal portions of a movable complementary arcuate clamping law 16.
Interconnecting the spaced channeled members M of the frame and appropriately secured to the walls of the grooves I5 thereof is an armate brace or jaw ll having a lower hair crimping beveled edge l8. For purposes of specification, jaw 11 may be considered as part of the stationary frame or casing ll.
Complementary clamping movable jaw I t is provided with pin l9 which is operativelystraddled by bifurcated or forked ends 2!] of the inwardly disposed arms 2| of the spaced bell crank levers or control means generally designated 22 each having a relatively long depending arm or handle 23.
Each bell crank lever has an elbow 24pivotally mounted on a fulcrum post 25 fixedly secured to forward wall l2. To prevent sagging of a fulcrum post 25 each of the latter is supported in a perforated lug 26 extending from a side wall 53 of the frame.
If the spaced manipulatable arms 23 are moved towards each other, normally horizontally disposed arms 2! move upwardly and actuate pin i9 which is fixedly connected to movable jaw it. That is, bifurcated ends 20 abut pin l9 and consequently jaw I6 is slidably displaced towards the companion stationary jaw ll although guided in the rectilinear channels 15 of the sides of the frame.
During displacement of the movable jaw, pin 19 is slidably guided in a vertically disposed slot 21 of the front wall i2 and to prevent transverse displacement of pin l9 relative to wall l2 and to prevent buckling of the movable jaw, pin 19 hasits outer end upset to form a relatively wide retaining head 28. Supplementing the action of the retaining head 28 to prevent buckling of the movable jaw, the latter is provided with a horizontal reinforcing or stiffening bead or rib 28.
In accordance with the invention, means is provided for automatically retracting the movable jaw after the latter has been moved towards the companion stationary jaw. For this purpose an inverted irregularly U shaped spring, generally designated 29, is utilized. This spring has its upper curved corner portions 30 resting on spaced posts 25. Integrally interconnecting corner portions 30 is a common offset horizontal intermediate portion 3| appropriately anchored by a rearwardly extending retain ng lug 32 struck out from front wall l2 of the frame. Depending from each corner portion is a leg 33 confined and retained within a vertical groove 34 of a companion manipulator arm 23. The action of the spring is such that its legs normally diverge the manipulating arms or handles 23 of the bell crank levers and consequently movable jaw I6 is normally in spaced vertical relation with the companion stationary jaw I1.
Movable jaw l6 has an expanded upper marginal portion in the form of a substantially spheroidal shaped or bulbous head or seat 35 for supporting an appropriately shaped resilient rubber block 36 having a longitudinally disposed striation or slit 31 which cooperates with edge 18 of the stationary jaw to effectively crimp eyelashes interposed therebetween.
More particularly resilient block or cushion 36 is provided with a longitudinal channel or groove 38 having inner surfaces closely and snugly embracing the arcuate faces of bulbous head 35 while lips 39 defined by the side walls of groove 38 firmly straddle the portion of the movable jaw just below or adjacent expanded head 35. If desired, block or bar 36 may be permanently secured to expanded head 35 by a suitable adhesive, such as glue or the like.
According to the form illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8, the upper expanded part of movable jaw I6 is provided with a series of diverging and similar lugs 40, the adjacent lugs extending in opposite directions, while alternate lugs of the series project in the same direction, the series of lugs constituting a seat on which resilient striated and grooved rubber block 36 is appropriately secured.
In the preferred embodiments illustrated in Figs. 9-12 inclusive, the slidable jaw I6 is without a strengthening bead 28 and each of the bell crank levers is normally urged outwardly by an associated spring 42 having a coiled intermediate portion 43 encircling a fulcrum post 25 carried by the frame. Each spring 42 also includes a free upper offset end portion 44 resiliently abutting a side wall l3 of the frame while a respective depending free lower or end portion 45 of the spaced springs 42 is retained in vertical groove 34 of an associated pivoted actuating arm 23 and imparts an outwardly directed force against the latter for normally holding the slidable jaw retracted. In actual practice, it has been found that supporting lugs 26 of the type illustrated in Fig. 3 need not be employed and accordingly these lugs have been eliminated from the embodiments illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 and in the latter vertical guide slot 21 of the type shown in Fig. 1 also need not be employed and hence pin 19 is free of the front wall l2 of the frame (see Fig. 10). It follows therefore that handles 23 cooperate and abut side walls I3 of the frame and such action limits retraction of the slidable jaw l6 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 9.
In Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive, the resilient striated block 36 is appropriately anchored to the slidable jaw l6 by moulding the depending lips 39 through the spaced perforations 46 provided in the jaw 16.
According to the form illustrated in Fig. 12, the slidable jaw I6 is of the type shown in Fig. 11 but the resilient block 36 is anchored in a slightly different fashion. In this connection, one of the lips 39 includes a plurality of spaced projections 41 which closely fit into the spaced openings 46 of the slidable jaw and these projections are secured to the companion abutting lip 39 by a suitable rubber cement or the like. In Fig. 12, it will be also observed that the front wall l2 of the frame is provided with a vertical boss 48 having an inner vertical groove 49 in which bell crank actuated pin I9 is slidably guided, the lower portion of the groove 49 serves also to limit downward displacement of pin l9, and consequently, the slidable jaw Hi. In other aspects, the constructions according to Figs. 9-12 inclusive are along the lines according to the form shown in Fig. 1.
The foregoing disclosure has been given by way of example for clearness and understanding of the method and means employed in carrying out the principles of the invention and while certain particular embodiments have been set forth and illustrated, it is to be understood that other modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims, the terms of the latter being employed for the sake of clearness rather 7 than by way of limitation.
I claim:
1. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising a stationary jaw, a slidably guided jaw within said frame, opposed bell crank levers pivoted to said frame and operatively connected to said slidable jaw for actuating the latter towards said stationary jaw, and spring means in part within said frame and in part retained by said bell crank levers for normally holding said slidable jaw spaced from said stationary jaw.
2. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising a stationary jaw, a jaw slidable relative to said stationary jaw, manipulatable means pivotally carried by said frame and having an operative connection with said slidable jaw for displacing the latter towards said stationary jaw, and spring means comprising an intermediate portion retained within said frame and integrally connected end portions coacting with said frame and said manipulatable means to normally urge the latter to sustain said slidable jaw away from said stationary jaw.
3. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising a stationary jaw, a jaw slidable relative to said stationary jaw, bell crank levers each having an elbow pivotally carried by said frame, said levers each comprising an arm having an operative connection with said movable jaw and a depending arm disposed below said frame and spring means comprising end portions cooperating with said depending arms and frame to normally hold said slidable jaw spaced from said stationary jaw.
4. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising slotted sides, a stationary jaw interconnecting said sides, a slidable jaw slidably guided by said sides, bell crank levers having an elbow pivotally carried by said frame, said levers each comprising an arm having an operative connection with saidslidable jaw and a depending manipulatable arm extending below said frame and spring means in part cooperating with said frame and having depending portions cooperating with said depending arms to normally hold said slidable jaw in spaced relation with said stationary jaw.
5. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising slotted sides, a movable jaw slidably guided by said sides and comprising an upper expanded portion, a striated resilient member closely embracing said expanded portion, bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame and operatively connected to said movable jaw and spring means cooperating with said frame and with said levers to normally hold said movable jaw away from said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having a stationary jaw, a slidable jaw guided in said frame, bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame and operatively connected to said slidable jaw for moving the latter towards said stationary jaw and automatic means cooperating with said levers to normally retract said slidable jaw from said stationary jaw.
7 In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having a stationary jaw, a jaw slidably guided in said frame and comprising an enlarged curved marginal portion, a striated resilient member secured to said marginal portion, bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame for moving said resilient member against said stationary jaw, and spring means having ends cooperating with said levers to normally hold said resilient member away from said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having an arcuate stationary jaw, an arcuate jaw slidably guided in said frame and comprising a plurality of diverging lugs, a striated resilient grooved member seated on said lugs and closely embracing a portion of said slidable jaw, manipulatable bell crank levers plvotally carried by said frame and operatively con nected to said slidable jaw for moving said resilient member against said stationary jaw and spring means for normally holding said slidable jaw away from said stationary jaw to retract said resilient member from the latter.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having a stationary jaw, a jaw slidably guided in said frame and comprising an expanded portion, a striated and grooved resilient member secured to said portion, bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame and operatively connected to said slidable jaw for bodily moving said striated member against said stationary jaw, an irregularly shaped spring having an intermediate portion retained by said frame and comprising spaced depending portions cooperating with said levers and retained by the latter for normally holding said resilient member away from said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having a stationary jaw, a jaw slidably guided in said frame and comprising an expanded upper portion having spaced diverging lugs, a striated and grooved resilient member secured to said portion and seated on said lugs, pivoted bell crank levers operatively connected to said slidable jaw for bodily shifting said striated resilient member against said stationary jaw, an irregularly shaped spring having an intermediate portion retained by said frame and comprising spaced depending portions cooperating with said levers and retained by the latter for normally 3 holding said resilient member away from a complementary clamping portion of said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having an arcuate stationary jaw, an arcuate reinforced jaw slidably guided in said frame and comprising an enlarged curved marginal portion, a striated and grooved resilient member secured to said portion, opposed bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame each comprising an actuating arm operatively connected to said slidable jaw and a depending arm extending below said frame, said depending arms being displaceable towards each other to move said slidable jaw towards said stationary jaw and spring means carried by said frame comprising depending portions cooperating with said depending arms to urge the latter away from each other to move said slidable jaw away from said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having an arcuate stationary jaw, an arcuate jaw slidably guided in said frame, opposed bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame each comprising an arm operatively connected to said slidable jaw and a depending manipulating grooved arm extending below said frame, said depending arms being displaceable towards each other to move said slidable jaw towards said stationary jaw and spring means havingdepending portions retained in said grooved arms for normally urging the latter outwardly to hold said slidable jaw away from a complementary clamping portion of said stationary jaw.

In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame having a stationary jaw, a slidable jaw guided in said frame, a post secured to said slidable jaw, opposed bell crank levers pivotally carried by said frame each comprising a bifurcated arm straddling said post, said bell crank levers each having a grooved depending arm extending below said frame, said depending arms being displaceable towards each other to shift said slidable jaw towards said stationary jaw, and spring means having end portions cooperating with said frame and grooved arms for normally urging the latter outwardly to sustain said slidable jaw in spaced relation with said stationary jaw.
14. The curler according to claim 13 in which said post is slidably displaceable relative to said frame and carries means cooperating with a forward wall of the latter to prevent buckling of said slidable viaw.
15. The curler according to claim 13 in which said bifurcated arms are disposed in overlapped relation about said post and said slidable jaw is provided with a longitud nally disposed stiffenina rib.
16. In an eyelash curler. the combination of. a frame comprising a stationary jaw, a slidable perforated jaw guided within said frame, a resilient member closely embra cing the upper margin of said slidable jaw and having spaced depending lips mouldably interconnected through said perforations, bell crank levers pivotally associated with said frame and operatively connected to said slidable jaw, and spring means cooperating with said levers to normally hold said slidable jaw away from said stationary jaw.
17. In an eyelash curler, the combination of, a frame comprising a stationary jaw having grooved sides, a slidable perforated jaw having jections to the companion lip of said pair, bell crank levers pivotally associated with said frame and operatively connected to said slidable jaw and spring means cooperating with said levers to normally hold said slidable jaw away from said 5 stationary jaw.
