' EYELASH CURLER Filed Jan. 4, 1938 INVENTGKS HAR OLD A SQUJRE PERCY J. A. SQUIRE By x Patented May 23, 1939 UNITED STATES EYELASH CURLER Harold Aldritt Squire and Percy James Aldritt Squire, New Invention, near Wolverhampton,
England; said Percy James Aldritt Squire assignor to Max Harry Greenman, London, England Application January 4, 1938, Serial No. 183,368 In Great Britain October 8, 1937 3 Claims.
This invention relates to eyelash curlers actuated by a scissor-like action, and has for its object to provide an improved construction of such an article.
It has been proposed to construct an eyelash curler from a supporting lever having a finger loop at one end, and with the other end formed as two side bars at a distance apart, and to the ends of which was rigidly secured the fixed jaw consisting of a curved strip of metal. An operating lever having a finger loop at one end and a cranked portion at the other end was pivotally connected to the supporting lever. A movable jaw consisting of a curved channel shaped member having an india-rubber filling was slidably mounted on the side arms of the supporting lever and was connected to the cranked end of the operating lever by a wire of substantially V-shape or forked formation, so that by moving the finger loop of the operating lever towards or away from the finger loop of the supporting lever, the movable jaw was moved on the side bars of the supporting lever to impart a sliding movement to the movable jaw in relation to the fixed jaw.
According to this invention, the movable jaw is free of the supporting lever, and is mounted on a member connected to the operating lever and to the supporting lever in such manner that the member is adapted to have a parallel motion 0 in relation to the supporting lever and the movable jaw a movement in a small arc of a circle or curve in relation to the fixed jaw.
The invention will be clearly understood from the following description aided by the accom- 35 panying drawing in which:--
Figure 1 is a side view of an eyelash curler according to this invention in the open position.
Figure 2 is a front view, and Figure 3 a plan of same, and
40 Figure 4 a similar view to Figure 1 but in the closed position.
According to the drawing, the eyelash curler consists of a lever I having a finger loop 2 at one end, and having the upper end bifurcated or pro- 45 vided with two- rods 3, 3 which are spaced apart at their ends and to the ends is rigidly connected the upper jaw 4 which consists of a curved piece of thin metal. To the lever I is pivoted at 5 another lever 6 provided with a finger loop I at one 0 end, this lever 6 being cranked or bent at a little distance from the pivot 5 as shown at 8. The end 7 9 of the lever projects beyond the pivot 5 for the required distance.
The lever I may be constructed from a single 55 length of wire or rod suitably bent upon itself and flattened at the adjacent parts for the pivot 5, and the lever 6 may also be formed from a single length of wire or rod suitably shaped upon itself and with the ends 9 flattened and passed through between the flattened portions of the lever I, the pivot 5 passing through holes in all the flattened portions.
The construction so far described is known, and according to the preferred form of the present invention, the lower jaw I0 which as is known consists of a channel shaped curved metal strip in which is inserted a length of resilient material II, is rigidly mounted on a member, consisting of a length of wire or rod, having a portion I2 of its length at the centre shaped to the curvature of the lower jaw I0, and to which portion I2 the lower jaw III is welded or otherwise secured. The wire on each side of the centre portion I2 is bent downwards, and curved forwardly and inwardly to form arms I3, I3, which at a suitable distance from the portion I2 are brought nearly together and bent downwards to form straight portions I4 at a slight distance apart, said straight portions I4 being flattened and provided with two holes at a distance apart.
The flattened adjacent portions of the lever i is made longer than in the known construction and at a suitable distance below the pivot pin 5 is pivotally connected by a pivot pin I5 one end of a link I6, the other end of the link I6 being provided with a hole at the same distance from the pivot pin I5 as the hole in the end of the end 9 of the lever 6 is from the pivot pin 5.
The arms I3 are positioned through the arms 3 of the lever I and the end 9 of the arm 6 and the end of the link I6 pivotally connected to the straight portions I4 by pivot pins I'I, I8 passing through the holes in the end 9, link I6 and in the portion I4. The distance between the pivot pins I1 and I8 being the same as the distance between the pivot pins 5 and I5, so that the straight portion I4 is always parallel with the flattened portion of the lever I and with the lower jaw I0 under the upper jaw 4.
On opening the levers I and 6 by moving the finger loop I away from the finger loop 2, the lower jaw Ill is moved away from the upper jaw 4 as shown in Figure 1, and on moving the finger loop I towards the finger loop 2, the lower jaw I0 is moved towards the upper jaw 4 as in Figure 4.
By this invention, the lower jaw I0 is free of the arms 3 of lever I, and by means of the parallel motion mechanism, the jaw I0 is moved in a small arc of a circle or curve in relation to the upper jaw 4 and not by a sliding movement on the arms 3 of the lever I as is known.
Various other constructions can be employed without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the following claims, for instance, two wires 13 without the connecting portion l2 could be employed, and the ends of the wires screwed, riveted or otherwise secured to the lower jaw l8, and the arms [3 can be, if necessary, connected together intermediate of their length by a cross-wire or strap. The lower jaw I0 may also be of other construction, such as a curved length of rod or bar covered with an india-rubber tube.
What we do claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
