CARL D. KOESER, OF OSIIKOSH, I/VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUCKSTAFF EDWARDS CO., OF OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN.
BURIAL-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,934, dated J' uly 1, 1902.
Application lecl March 4, 1902.
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CARL D. KOESER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wiscousin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burial-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of burialcases known as couch-Gaskets, in which a couch effect is desired when the casket is open and the objects of my invention are, first, to saw or otherwise divide the body longitudinallyinto two artistically-scrolled segments conforming to'each other and attach the upper segment permanently to the top; second, to provide at the rear of the casket a bracket scrolled at the top in conformity with the front of the body and hinged to the casket-top, so as to automatically swing free from the back of the body as the casket is closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front view of the casket open, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on a line through either hinge e, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is the same with the casket closed. Fig. -l is detail sectional view showing a modification.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in each View.
A represents the lower segment of the body, and B the upper segment, which is permanently attached to the top C. The top is hinged to the body at c.
D represents the rear bracket, scrolled to conform to the front of the body A and hinged at d d to braces or ribs E E, attached to or integral with the top. The bracket D is preferably beveled at its lower edge d, and a loose joint is provided between the edge d serial No. 96,692. (No modem and the upper edge of the body, so that when the top is lowered the bracket will swing inwardly and clear the back of the body, descending alongside of it to approximately the position shown in Fig. 3, when the casket is upholstered and draped.
It will be observed that with a portion of the body attached to the top a greater depth is given to the top for upholstering and draping. A more beautiful effect is thereby attained than with a plain shallow top.
The upholstering at the back is attached to the bracket D and the top of the bracket, as well as the two corresponding scroll-pieces, lending harmony to create a beautiful effect to the casket generally.
Itis not essential as a feature of my in= vention that the top scroll of the bracket D should conform to or correspond with the scroll of the body-pieces. Any ornamental design or shape may be used, and any style of upholstering or draping may be adopted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimtohave invented, and desire to secure A burial-casket comprising, inits construction, a body, a hinged top and a rear bracket hinged to braces of the top so as to depend in a vertical line with the body back when open, and swing forward to clear the body as the casket is closed, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL D. KOESER.
