A no@ Wl TNE SSE S lIO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDWARD AKRANCHER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Y HAT-PIN RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 703,795, dated July 1, 1902.
Application led October 16, 1901. Serial No. 78,831. (No model.) v
To @ZZ 1071/0711/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KRANCHER, aA
the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in.
the county of Kings and State of New-York, have invented a new and ImprovedDevice for Protecting Hats, of which the followin gis a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to means for protecting ladies hats and auxiliary parts, such as ribbons and ornaments, from the eiects of mutilations caused by the use of hat-pins.
The invention consists in the novel -construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hatupon which my device is employed in connection with an ornament. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional viewer" the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of certain details, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the' device applied to the plain-portion of a hat.
The body 1 of the hat may be provided 'with ribbons 2 and ornaments 3 of various kinds in the usual manner, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or may be plain, as in Fig. 4.
A button is made of two portions 4 and 14, the portion 4 being cupped at for the purpose of aording a grip against the substance of the hat. Upon the member 4 is mounted a screw-threaded cylindrical portion integral therewith, this cylindrical portion being openended, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, and provided with constricted rings 6 8. In this cylindrical portion is mounted a iilling 13, of cork, fiber, or any similar substance, the same being held in place by the combined eect of the screw-threads 7, surrounding it, and the constricted rings 6 and 8. The tilling, being compressible, can be pushed out of the cylindrical space when desired for the purpose of substituting a new iilling or for any other purpose. The constricted rings 6 and S prevent the iilling from projecting outwardly from the hollowr metallic member. The
Vother member 14 is provided With screwihreads 9`and also With a horn-shaped end 10. This member is adapted to screw upon the threads 7, so that the two vmembers of the button can be secured together. The cupped edges 15 and 5 engage the respective inner and outer surfacesof the hat, thus preventing the button from becoming detached and preventing the members from moving relatively toward each other.
Where ornaments 3 are used, they are placed directly against the body of the hat and the members of lthe button pass through them, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
My invention is used as follows: The two members of the button being placed in position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 andin Fig. 4, the shaft 1l of the hat-pin is simply stuck through the filling linstead of through the hat direct. This of course saves the mutilation of the body of the hat and of various ribbons and ornaments usually damaged by the use of the hat-pin and enables the hatpin to be placed precisely in the same position every time. Of course any number of these buttons maybe placed upon a hat, and the hat-pin can be run through them upon either side of the hat. 4
Vhere ornaments are used, the ornaments are mounted upon the buttons in the manner shown, and as the larger horn-shaped end`10 of the button is made tolerably small and the head 12 of the hat-pin may be chosen tolerably large the hat-pin will have the appearance of being stuck directly through the ornament, but without the possibility of mutilating the same.
My purpose in making the open ends hornshaped is to enable the point of the hat-pin to find its way into the filling. The constricted ring o' answers virtually the same purpose and to all intents and purposes renders the button horn-shaped inside the hat.
vThis is for the purpose of enabling the point have no trouble in inserting the pin through l of said members, and detachably secured inthe filling of my device upon either or both dependently of the other member, for the pursides of the hat. pose of receiving the shaft of a. hat-pin.
' Having thus described my invention,` I In testimony whereof I have signed my I5 5 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters name to this speciication in the presence of Patenttwo subscribing Witnesses.
As an article of manufacture, a hat-protect- EDWARD KRANCHER ing device comprising a composite button f made of open-ended members provided with Witnesses:
