Be it known that I, GEORGE E. R. ROTHEN BUCHER, a citizen of the United States, and.
a resident of New York, Brooklyn borough,

Fig. 3 is a face view of the keeper which I employ for lockin g the wrench- This invention relates to improvements in devices of that class commonly known as combination-wrenches, each of which while adapted for use after the-manner of an ordinary wrench embodies parts which render the wrench available for a plurality of purposes The object of this invention is to provide an implement of the type above indicated which shall combine the characteristics of the Well-known Stilson wrench, a so-called pipe-wrench, and a so-called pipe-cut ting wrench, which shall be simple, cheap, and novel as regards construction and which shall possess certain Well-defined advantages over prior analogous devices.
The invention consists in the employment of certain novelly-f ormed parts, inthe novel disposition and arrangement of the various parts, in certain combinations of the latter, and in certain details of construction, all of which will he specifically referred to hereinafter and set forth in the appended claims.
Having reference to the accompanying drawings, 2 denotes the body of the wrench ofmetal and havin a central bore 2 enlar ed b i b as to diameter at its respective ends to form the spindle-socket 2", and the cutter-socket 2,the latter being angular in cross-section by preference.

I It will be seen by referring to Fig. 2 that the body 2 terminates at its rear end in a re-' duced portion, and this reduced portion is provided with an integral engaging lip 5, forming a transverse open-ended recess 5 between said lip' and the adjacent shoulder of the body 2, formed by reducing the endof "said body, and the inner face of said lip is formed slightly out of parallel with the said shoulder of the body 2. I purpose providing .'the;reduced portion of the body 2 with at least two of the lips 5, one located diametrically opposite to the other.
The keeper 4 has a suit ble central opening to admit of its being mounted on the spindle 3 and an interior lateral recessforming the upper and lower inwardly-extending flanges 6 6, and when the keeper. 4 is in position for locking the spindle 3 to the body 2 r the flange 6 occupies the recess 5 and binds between the lip 5 and the adjacent shoulder of the body 2. The inner face of. the flange 6 is slightly inclined to correspond substantially wi'ththe inclined face of the lip 5.
The diameter of the opening in the keeper 4, at the upper face thereof, is primarily substantially the same as the diameter of the reduced portion of the body 2 and is sufficient to allow the shoulder 4 to pass to the interior of the keeper 4 when the latter is adjusted upon the spindle 3, and the flange 6 is suitably cut away, as at 7 7, to increase the diameter of said keeper-opening in one direction, and thus permit the passage of the lip or lips 5 to the interior of said keeper when the latter is primarily adjusted upon the reduced portion of the body 2. When said keeper is thus adjusted upon the reduced portion of the body 2, the flange 6 may be caused to bind between the lip 5 and the adjacent shoulder of the body 2, as above mentioned, by suitably turning said keeper on the reduced portion of said body. This operation results in firmly locking the spindle 3, with its accompanying handle, to the body 2.
The spindle 3 is provided with a central bore at its enlarged end suitably threaded to receive the threaded portion of the cuttercarrier 8, which is provided with a clip, as shown, in which is rotatably mounted a diskcutter 8, as on the shaft 8, which latter bears at its respective ends in the opposing members 9 9 of said clip, as will be readily understood. The cutter-socket 2" being angular in cross-section, the clip members 9 9 obviate any appreciable rotary movement of the cutter-carrier S.
From the foregoing description of the parts under consideration it will be seen that in order to impart a longitudinal movement to the cutter-carrier 8, so as, for instance, to cause the cutting edge of the cutter 8' to project above the edge of the socket 2', the keeper 4 is turned somewhat out of its locked position, but not suflicient to allow the lip or lips 5 to escape therefrom, and the handle 3 is rotated in the direction to unscrew the carrier 8 from the spindle 3, and since the latter may not now recede or escape from its socket 2" the carrier 8 will move longitudinally away from the spindle 3 and carry the cutter 8 outward from its socket at the will of the user. Now by still holding the keeper 4 in its liberated position, as stated, and reversely rotating the handle 3 the carrier 3 may be returned to its normal position and likewise the cutter 8 to its socket, whereupon by duly rotating the keeper at all movable parts thus far described may be locked in their normal positions, and it will be seen that should the keeper 4 be rotated, so as to cause the cut-away portion or portions of the flange 6 to register with the lip or lips 5, the handle 3, ferrule 4L, spindle 3, and keeper 4 may be detached as a unit from the carrier.8 by suitably rotating said handle. When in its normal position, further return movement of the carrier 8 is limited by reason of the clip members 9 9', carried thereby, being of suitable dimensions to prevent the entrance thereof to the bore of the body 2 and to cause them to engage the bottom of the cutter-socket 2'.
The threaded adjustable shank 10, cradle 10, and adjusting-nut 10 are of ordinary and well-known construction, save that the cradle 10 is arranged to swing on a pivot, as 11, toward and away from the body 2, the swinging movement thereof away from said body being limited by the stop or stops l1, preferably formed integral with the body 2. Normally the cradle 10 is locked at the limit of its movement away from the body 2 by means of the lock-lever or analogous device 11", suitably fnlcrnmed, as at 12. When this lever is moved, as to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the cradle 10 may be swung somewhat from the position it occupies in Fig. 1 and which is its normal position toward the body 2, and the purpose of this movement of the cradle 10 will be explained hereinafter. In practice I purpose to employ a pair of stops, such as 11, one at each side of the body 2, and a pair of lock-levers, such as 11", also one at each side of the body 2, for respectively engaging said stops.
The head 12 of the shank 10 has a recess 12 opening toward the body 2, and there is located in said recess a pair of rollers 13 13, adapted to rotate, as on the shafts 14 14'. The rollers 13 13 are normally covered by the removable jaw 13, here shown as having a roughened face, though the face thereof may be smooth,when desired. The jaw 13 is dovetailed to the head 12, as shown, and to aid in the retention of said jaw in place for service I employ a stop, as 14", here shown as springactuated and let into a hole or recess formed in the head 12.
The wrench is provided with a further removable jaw 15, dovetailed to the end of the body 2, as shown, and to aid in the retention of this jaw in place for service I employ a further stop 15, corresponding in all essentials with the stop 14".
The jaw 15 seats fully upon the material of the body 2, surrounding the cutter-socket 12', and as the rollers 13 13 project somewhat from the recess 12 it is essential that the jaw 13 be cut away to provide space for the projecting portions of said rollers. In this connection I prefer to form the back of the jaw 13 substantially as shown in the drawings, to the end that said jaw may be provided with a central transverse rib, as 15", which will normally engage the head 12 at the sides of the recess 12 and materially strengthen said jaw.
When it is desired to cut an object circular in cross-section, as a piece of pipe or tube, it will be seen that the rollers 13 13 serve to hold the cutter 8 centered to said object at all times during the operation of cutting.
When it is desired to make use of the wrench as a so-called pipe-wrench, the swinging movement of the cradle 10 is desirable, as
thereby the jaws 13" and 15 may be separated and disengaged from the object between them should said jaws become unduly set against said object in using the wrench.
From the foregoing description of my device it will be seen that the same is particularly well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed and, further, that it may be modified to some extent without material departure from the spirit and principle of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A device of the class herein described comprising a body provided with a reduced portion having an engaging-lip, and with a spindle-socket, a spindle within said socket and having a boss, and a keeper on said spindle at the outer side of said boss, the said keeper having a flange at one face thereof adapted to engage said lip and lock said spindle against displacement from said socket.
2. A device of the class herein described comprising a hollow body; a cutter-carrier within said body, and therein movable longi tudinallyg' means for holding said carrier against a rotary movement; a spindle having athreaded engagement with said carrier; and a rotatable keeper capable, when in its locked position, of normally holding said spindle against movement independent of said body, and of permitting a rotary movement of said spindle though loosely holding said spindle against displacement from said'body, when the said keeper is eased out ofits lockedposition.
3. A device of the class herein described comprising a body, a cradle having a swingin g movement with respect to said body, means for limiting the movement of said cradle'away from said body, and a suitably-fulsaid body, means for limiting the movement of said cradle away from said body, a suitably-fulcru'med lever for locking said cradle at the limit of its movement away from said body, an adjustable shank in said cradle, the said shank having a recessed head lying opposite to said cutter, and a pair of rollers in the recess of said head, the said rollers being located oneon each side of the center line of said cutter, substantially as herein de scribed.
