SCREWING AND BORING HAND TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,827, dated September 3, 1 895.
Applicat n filed December 22, 1894:. Serial No. 532,669.- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUDON SILCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a screwing and boring device in one and the same tool of simple, cheap, and durable construction, which can be handled and operated with perfect ease and simplicity, particularly in boring or screwing tires upon carriages and wagons, the tool being of such construction as to enable an operator to handle it about a vehicle-wheel without assistance and without the usual expenditure of time and labor.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved tool. Fig. 2 is plan view of the tool-frame, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tool-frame.
The body or frame A of the tool is made with parallel sides a, joined together at one end, and is castor worked out all in one piece,
I with a projectionE extending at an angle from the joining or back pieceO, thus forming a U-shaped frame for a set of toothed or gear wheels.
The main or central driving gear-wheel D is located between the sides a of the U-shaped frame upon a spindle or shaft d which is journaled in bearings b in the said sides a.
One end of this spindle is provided with a stem E, to which may be secured a brace such as is commonly used for operating handbits. Upon the opposite end of the spindle E is secured a chuck E or similar retaining device, provided with a suitable set-screw c.
The stem E is detachable and maybe removed from its position shown in the draw ings and secured in the chuck E in order to operate the device to perform certain work, while the device can be reversed or turned, from side to side in order to operate the several implements, as desired. On either side of the gear-wheelD and meshing into said wheel are secured upon similar spindles smaller gear-wheels F, and upon either end of the said spindles are secured the chucks G G, having Although I have shown and described three gear-wheels, a greater or less number may be employed with good efiect. The chucks on both sides may have a drill, a screwdriver, and a nut-socket secured thereto, and by holding the tool in proper position any one of the 5 implements can be operated without the least difficulty without removing or being interfered with by the remaining implements.
By holding the tool in proper position any one of the implements can be readily oper- 7o ated, by revolving the stem E, without the least difficulty and without removing or be ing interfered with by the remaining implements. For example, a set-screw hole may be bored, and. by simply turning the tool upside down such screw can be run into its place by means of the nut-socket on one of the spindles. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,.and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a reversible screwing and boringhand tool, the U shaped frame, the projection for carrying a handle, formed in the same piece with the frame and extenda suitable screwing or boring implement upon go each end, as set forth.
2. In a reversible screwing'and boring hand tool, the tool frame having parallel sides, the back piece 0, and the projection E, all formed in one piece, the said projection extending 5 out from the back at an angle in a vertical plane with the opening between the said sides, in combination with the spindles, having tool sockets at both ends, and gear wheels secured upon all of the spindles be- ICO tween the sides of the frame, substantially as shown and described and for the purpose set forth;
