Be it known that T, PERRY FLORA, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Owingsville, in the county of Bath and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit- Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that form of wrench or brace in which a ratchet is used, operable in either direction, and having a handle carrying pawls engaging with the ratchet when the handle is operated in either direction, means being also provided for engaging both of the pawls with the ratchet so that the ratchet and handle will operate together in both directions.
The object of the invention to provide a very simple and convenient tool of this character having a handle projecting out at right angles to the body of the brace or wrench, whereby increased leverage may be secured, and also provided with a pressure knob which may or may not be used, as desired, this knob entering the shank of the implement immediately behind the tool held therein, but being detachable therefrom, if wished.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my improved wrench; Fig. 2 is a section thereof on the line 2-2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of another form of my wrench; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section on the line 4 t of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved implement, in the form shown in Fig. 1, consists of a hollow body 2, shown in detail in Fig. 2, open at its rear end and extending laterally at 2*, this body constituting a sleeve which surrounds a shaft 5, as will be later described. The
rear open end of the body is closed by a covering plate 8 which extends along the angular extension 2 as shown, and held in place by screws 4 located at one end, and by screws 4; at the other. Carried within the body or sleeve 2 is the shaft 5 having at its rear end the ratchet 6 and at its forward end where it projects beyond the sleeve 2, the tool-engaging head 7 having therein the socket 8 for the reception of a tool, said head entering into an annular recess formed in the end of the body so as to give a very rigid bearing for the head and for the shaft. Mounted within the angular extension of the sleeve 2 are the opposed pawls 9. There are two of these pawls opposite to each other and engaging on opposite sides of the ratchet, said pawls being cut away so that while the bases of the pawls bear against each other, the tooth of each pawl is as wide as the ratchet 6, thus securing a firm engagement of the pawls with the ratchet. A screw 10 passes through the covering plate 3 and through the pawls to form a pivot pin for the same, the covering plate being countersunk to receive the head of the pin. Tn order that either pawl may move out of engagement with the ratchet teeth, each pawl has a laterally projecting lug 11 extending into the opposed slots 12 formed in the wall of the angular extension, the lugs being long enough to project through the wall when the pawls are in engagement with the ratchet. The end of the angular portion 2 of the body or sleeve and the end of the covering plate are re duced to receive a ring 12 which is freely rotatable around said reduced end and is held in place by a collar 13 or in any other suitable manner. This ring has a thickened wall 12 adapted to engage with either one of the lugs 11, and a spring 9 acts to force the lugs apart and pawls in engagement with the ratchet. The extremity of theangular extension 2 is screw-threaded to engage with a handle 14L- which is preferably hollow and provided with the cap 15. The hollow handle is adapted to inclose a variety of small tools which may be used in connection with the head 7. ' The operation of my invention will be obvious from the description. Under ordinary-circumstances, it is only necessary .wtOOPGIELtG the tool with the-handle 14, but

.1.- In.an implementpf the character de- .scri.bed, a. shaftivhaving annenlarged sock- -aeted head at onezend-anda ratchet at the .eother, a. tubular-ibodyihaving a recess at its forward end to receive the inner end of the head and formed with a hollow angular extension circular in cross-section, the rear end of the body and rear face of the angular extension being open, a pawl pivotally mounted in the angular extension and engaging the ratchet, a cover-plate closing the rear end of the body and the rear face oftheangular extension having its outer surface rounded to conform to the rounded contour of the angular extension and the body, said plate, the body and the angular extension entirely housing the shaft, the ratchet and the pawl.
2. In an implement of the character described, a shaft having an enlarged socketed head at one end and a ratchetin the-other, a tubular body having a recess at its for- Ward end to receive the inner end of the head and formed with a hollow angular extension, the said angular extension in crosssection forming a section of a circle, the
