To all lwhom t may concern:
t Be it known that I, JOHN SCHNEIDER, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairiield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Combination- Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in that type of boring or drilling tools having a breast plate and it has for its object to provide an implement of the general type stated that can be quickly adjusted so it will act as a drill and valve grinder, and with the drive mechanism arranged to impart a reverse rotary motion to the drill head or stock or to act as a straightway breast drill with the mechanism adjusted for imparting a rotary or boring motionf in one direction only, to the drill head or stock.
My invention also has for its object to provide a combination tool or implement of the character stated, of a simple and economical construction that is easily manipulated and in which a single master or driving gear is used that can be quickly adjusted for engaging with gears on the drill spindle, in such manner that either a direct or reverse rotary motion can be imparted thereto as conditions may make it desirable.
With other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the peculiar arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a vertical section of my invention, parts being shown in elevation and the same shown adjusted for imparting a direct rotary motion to the drill spindle. Fig. 2, is a similar view, the parts being adjusted for imparting a reverse rotary motion to the drill. Fig. 3, is a face View of the master or driving gear hereinafter specifically referred to. Fig. 4, is an elevation of the yoke frame showing the gear lat-ching device. Fig. 5, is a similar view showing the latch swung aside to admit the gear shaft.
In the practical arrangement, my present construction of'drillin'g implement comprises a yoke frame 1, see Fig. 4, the upper cross member of which has a socket 10 that forms the upper bearing for the drill spindle 4 and the said upper end is extended and forms the shank 30 for the breast plate 31, integral with or otherwise mounted on the said shank 80. The lower cross member 11 of the yoke is vertically apertured to form the bearing 21W for the lower end of the spindle 4 to which the drill head stock 65 is secured in any well-known manner. A bevel gear 5 is mounted on the upper end of the spindle just below the upper cross member of the yoke frame and it is made fast to the spindle by a cross pin 50. A similar bevel gear 6 is likewise secured on the lower end of the spindle 4 just above the lower cross member of the yoke frame and to reduce friction, bearing balls 66 may be interposed between the member 11 and the part beneath the same.

Midway its height the yoke frame has a cross brace 13 integral with the sides in which are two horizontal sockets 16-16n in vertical alinement and located one above the other as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and on the back face of theI said brace portion 13 is pivotally hung a locking plate 14 that has two side notches 17-18 whose purpose is to slip over the groove 19 in the inwardly projected end of the stub axle 20 that projects from the inner face of and is integral with the master or driving gear, 21. Locking plate 14 has a linger lug 14a at one edge for conveniently swinging the said plate back in the direction ofthe arrow m, Fig. 4, when it is desired to re-adjust the gear 21 for changing the motion of the drill and for holding the latch or locking plate to its down or locked position the upper end is provided with a spring plate 22. The master gear 21 has an annular bevel gear rim 21a of one diameter and a series of segmental but annularly arranged beveled gear portions 21b of another diameter, less than that of the outer gear rim 21a,

By reason of the peculiar construction and combination of the several parts as described, it will be readily apparent from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing that when the gear 21 has its stub axle journaled in the upper socket bearing in the yoke frame, as in Fig. l, by firmly holding` the implement by grasping the handle of the yoke frame, bearing on the breast plate and turning the crank handle, a direct and continuous rotary mot-ion is imparted to the drill spindle since 1n the adjustment shown, only one of the bevel gears, the lower one 6, is in mesh with the outer or annular gear rim of the gear 9,1 and hence a direct motion is transmitted to the drill.
lVhen it is desired to apply a reverse rotary motion to the drill, the gear 2l is removed by proper adjustment of the latch or lock device and its stub axle is journaled in the lowermost one of the bearings on the yoke frame, and is locked therein by bringing down the latch device, thus holding the parts as in Fig. 2 with segmental bevel gear portions of the said driver gear 2l in line to engage both the lower gear G and the' upper gear 5, it being apparent that by reason of the arrangement of the segmental gear rim on the wheel 21 motion is transmitted to the drill stock first through the upper gear in one direct-ion and then the other gear in the reverse direction, it being clear that during a complete revolution of the master gear 21, the upper gear is rotated one-half the time of the revolution of the main driving gear 2l and lies idle while a like rotation of the lower gear takes place.
My invention is exceedingly simple and the parts are so combined that they cannot be readily broken. The construction is a preferred one, owing to the simple arrange ment of the parts but they may be slightly varied or the construction modified in some details without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
As a convenience, the upper part of shank 30 is made hollow as at 3() so that drill bits, valve grinding tools and valve supporting springs may be kept in case of need.
That I claim is l. An implement of the character stated, comprising a iframe, a spindle loosely turnable therein with its lower end projected to receive a drill carrying chuck, an upper and a lower bevel gear fixed on the spindle, a driver disk having a continuous annular gear rim of one diameter and a series of annularly disposed segmental gear portions, said disk having a stub axle, the frame having a plurality of bearing sockets to receive the said stub axle, and means for removably holding the stub axle of the disk in either of the bearing sockets.
2. In a tool of the character stated, the combination of a frame having cross bearings at the upper and lower ends, a drill chuck spindle loosely mounted in the said bearings, a bevel gear ixedly mounted on the upper end of the spindle, a similar gear lixedly mounted on the lower portion of the spindle, a breast plate mounted in the upper cross bearing of the frame, the said frame having a plurality of centrally disposed bearings, a driver disk having a stub axle for engaging with either of the said frame bearings, means for removably holding the said stub axle in the bearings, the said disk having an annular continuous gear rim adapted when the disk is mounted in one position to engage with one of the bevel gears on the spindle and having a plurality of annularly disposed segmental gear portions or intermittently engaging with both of the gears on the spindle.

The combination with the yoke frame, including upper and lower cross members, the upper member having a socket, the lower member being vertically apertured, said socket and apertured portions of the frame forming bearings for the drill spindle,'the spindle loosely journaled in the said bearings, whose lower end projects for receiving the drill chuck, a pair of bevel gears ixedly held on the drill spindle, one near the upper cross portion of the frame, the other at the lower cross portion of the said frame, a yoke frame including a cross brace having a pair of vertically alined bearing apertures, a crank equipped driving wheel having a stub axle for engaging with either of the bearings on the yoke frame, the said driving wheel having a continuous annular gear member adapted when the disk is in one of its adjusted positions on the yoke frame for continuously engaging with one of the gears on the drill spindle, and having a series of separated segmental gear surfaces, annularly disposed for intermittently engaging both of the gears on the drill spindle when the said driver gear is adjusted to the other position on the yoke frame.
