To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN E. MoLoUeHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida. and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of referenceV marked thereon, which form a' part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in caps belonging to the general class of wearing-apparel, more especially that type having a neck-protector or sliding baud. It has for its object to simplify construction, lessen cost of manufacture, and reduce the number of parts employed in such manufacture, whileit possesses all the benefits or advantages of the previousy constructions of this character of goods, and yet free from the objectionable features thereof.

The nature of my invention consists of -a band or protector, preferably connected or sewed to the body of. the cap at its lower edge continuously or entirely around the same and over and independently of the vizor and adapted to lap or slide upon said body and also to fold upon itself, permitting said band or protector to have an extended surface or area to afford increased protection. Said band or protector is adapted to also fold down over or upon and extend continuously below the vizor, being severed or slitted preferably at that point and havingan elastic piece or strip secured upon opposite sides of the meeting or contacting edges of the slit or cut, preferably at the extreme outer edge of said band, effecting such contact betweenv said edges, thus practically producing a continuation of the band or protector itself, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side view showing the folding or sliding band or protector turned uparound the cap-bodyias when not in practical use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the band or protector extended or turned down as when in service. Fig. 3 is a front view with the band or protector in the lastvnamed position, disclosing more particularly the feature of the practical continuation of the band itself where slitted preferably over or opposite the vizor. Fig. t is a broken vertical section with the band or protector in its turned-up or folded position.

It will be understood that latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed without departing from the spirit of my invention and thesame remain intact and be protected as claimed.

In carrying out my invention I produce or construct the body l of the cap in the usual or any approved form, thev same having the usual vizor la. A sliding or folding band or protector 2 has its lower edge suitably secured or sewed to thecorresponding edge of the cap-body 1, continuously or entirely around said body or edge and over but independent of the vizor, as shown. Thus it will be seen that by this direct connection of said band or protector to the cap-body above land separately from the vizor, as well as elsewhere along said cap-body, the band or protector is adapted to be produced in a continuous uniform piece, not requiring the varying of the construction or contour thereof, and leaving it unattached thereto, especially opposite orvabove the vizor, as heretofore. By this construction or connection it will be also observed that the protector or band itself is adapted to be drawn down uponthe vizor and below it and without employing an additional piece to span the space between and connect up the distant ends of the band or protector over the vizor, as heretofore practiced, except where the vizor has been connected to the band or protector, as in other forms of caps asI formerly made, which it :is not necessary to do in order to secure the benefits of my invention. Also it will be noted that the protector or band is itself adapt ed to extend continuously around and below the vizor in using or practicing the same, as will be seen by reference to the drawings, avoiding the employment of additional means therefor, as previously required. Said band or protector is produced, preferably, at a point opposite or contiguous to the vizor from IOO its outer edge with a transverse slit or cut 3,ex tending, say, about one-third the depth of said band or protector, and secured or sewed to the last named across said slit or cut is an elastic strip or piece 4, the extreme lower edge of said 'band upon opposite sides of said slit or cut being, however, brought close together or in contact, forming the practical continuation of the band, as above recited. Said elastic strip or piece provides for pulling or drawing upon the band, especially when slid or pulled down around the neck of the wearer to effect the close or snug fitting of said band or protector therearound, while the holding of said band in its folded position up around the cap-body will be aided by said elastic strip or piece. Said band, it will be observed, after having been initially folded or slid upwardly around the cap-body is next folded downwardly upon itself, more or less stretching the elastic piece for the purpose aforesaid, As a matter of finish for the front of the cap a bow-knotted ribbon 5 may be applied thereto, the free ends of the ribbon being passed outwardly through the slit or cut 3 produced in the band 2, and the bow or knot formed exteriorly of said band opposite to and in a measure concealing said slit or cut. The folding of the band upon itself provides for the storing, as it were, of an extended area or surface of the band, affording increased protection for the wearer when in practical use or service.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*

l. A cap, comprisinga body portion, a Vizor connected to said body portion, and asliding yielding band with its normally lower edge extending entirely around, and connected to,

the outer lower edge of said body portion, and arranged independently of, and above, said vizor, the free longitudinal edge of said band, itself, practically being continuous and, when pulled down, extending below said vizor, substantially as described.

2. A cap, comprising a body portion, a vizor connected to said body portion, and a sliding band, with its normally lower edge extending entirely around, and connected to, the outer lower edge of 'said body portion and arranged independently of, and above, said vizor, the free longitudinal edge of said band, itself, practically being continuous and,when pulled down, extending below said vizor, said band having a transverse slit, with its edges normally in contact and an elastic or yielding gore secured at said slit to said band, substantially as described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a cap comprising a body portion, a vizor fixed to the latter, and a sliding band, with its normally lower edge extending entirely around, and connected to, the outer lower edge of said body portion and arranged independently of, and above, said vizor, the free longitudinal edge of said band, itself, practically being continuous, and,when pulled down,extending below said vizor, said band having a transverse slit, its edges normally in contact and with an elastic gore secured at said slits to said band, and adapted to fold upon itself when out of use, as around said body portion, substantially as described.
