BRANDlNG-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,567, dated July 1, 1902. Application filedllugust26,1901. S erial No. v3.2a. (NomodcL) To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, FRANK FRANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fargo, in the county of Cass and Stateof North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Branding-Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has forits object to provide an improved branding device especially adapted for branding cattle or other live stock; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The device in its preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure l is a view, partly'in side elevation and partly in vertical section, illustrating my improved branding device; and Fig.-2 is a view, principally in plan, but with some parts sectioned, showing the parts illustrated in Fig. 1. A
The numeral indicates the tank, thenumeral 2 the handle, the numeral 3 the valved discharge-tip or burner, and the numeral the flame-tube, of an ordinary hydrocarbon as is used by tinsmiths, plumbers, and other mechanics.
The head of the branding device is of course of metal. It is preferably of oblong form, as indicated by the numeral 5, and is formed hollow and provided at its open end with a centrally-located hub portion 6, into which the projecting end of the flame tube 4 is screwed to rigidly secure the said brandinghead to the said tube. Openings 7 are thus left in the open end of the head 5 both above and below the hub 6, which flame-outlet passages are adapted to direct the flamev outward from the cavity within the head 5 after it has struck the bottom thereof and been deflected rearward. I find that the best results can usually be obtained by closing one or the other of the passages 7. In Fig. 1 the lower passage 7 is shown as closed by a removable frictionally-held cap or stopper 8, which is adapted to fit either one of said pasof the flame-tube 4t .pletely into the interior of the head 5 and is directed where it will sages 7 The part of the branding-head which is to make the impression or brand-mark is indicated by the numeral 9. As shown in the drawings, this branding edge 9 is in the form of a straight rib. This straight rib for most brands is all that is required, as it may be used to form all such letters as A, H, M, N, V, cc W, X, 8 However, the said branding-rib may be given various other forms, and the head 5 may be correspondingly varied. The said head, however, must be kept hollow and be directly secured to the flame-tube in position to receive the entire flame directly from the ends of the said flame-tube. To prevent too rapid radiation of heat through the sides of the heads 5, it is provided with an asbestos insulating-cover 10.
The complete device is adapted to be carried in one hand and to be operated by that hand. It is important to note that by means the flame is carried comproduce the greatest heating effect on the portion 9.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the United States, is as follows:
1.. .Thecombination with a burner of the character described, having a suitable handpiece and provided with a projecting flametube 4, of the branding-head 5 having the centrally-located hub 6 and backturned flamepassage 7 located above said tube 4, the side walls-of said head 5 being imperforate, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the burner of the character described having a suitable handpiece and horizontally-projecting flame-tube 4:, of the branding-head 5 havinga centrallylocated hub 6 and and backturned flame-passages 7 on opposite sides of said hub, and the removable cap or stopper 8 fitting both of the said passages7 to close one or the other thereof, at will, said head 5 having imperforate side walls, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
