JOHN s. JUDY, or MIDDLETQWN,,EENNSYLVANIA CANE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l709,095, dated September 16, 1902.
Application filed November 20, 1901. Serial No. 83.015. (No model.)A
To @ZZ whom if, may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. JUDY, a citizen of the United States,-residing at Middletown, in the county of Dauphin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make Yand use the same.
This invention relates to toys; and it has for its object to provide a sounding toy in the form of a cane which is adapted to receivea metal cap in itsferrule in such position that when the cane is thrust or thrown downwardly upon the pavementthe head of the cap will strike andthe cap will be exploded, afurther object of the invention being to provide a specific construction of ferrule which may be cast of malleable metall and which will permit escape ot the gases of explosion, and which gases will be deiiected downwardly by a Ilange forming aresonator.
In the drawings forminga portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a cane constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the ferrule of the cane with a cap in place.
Referring now to the drawings, the cane Acomprises a body portion 5, having a handle 6 of any suitable form and at the lower end of which body is the ferrule 7. The ferrule, which may be formed of malleable iron brass, or other suitable material, consists of an upper downwardly-tapering socket portion 8, which receives the lower end of the body, which may be held therein by means of a pin, and consists also of alower tubular portion 9, the bore 10 of which passes vertically through thelowerportion, this lower tubular portion being connected with the upper ferrule portion by means of a reduced neck 11. The upper end of the tubular portion is slanted, as shown, and is spaced from the lower end of the socketed portion, and the lower end of the socketed portion is provided with an outwardly and downwardly directed iiange 12 of bell shape, which projects over or outwardly beyond the edge of the bore of the tubular portion. Y
In the use of the toy a metal cap 14, having the shape of an ordinary cartridge-shell with a base-flange 15, is disposed in the lower end of the bore of the tubular portion and with the flange resting against the tubular portion. If the cane be then dropped or thrust downwardly to strike the base of the cap againstV the 'pavement or any other hard and firm object, the cap will be exploded and the gases will pass from the upper end of the tubular portion and into the inclosure of the flange 12 and from which iange they will be directed downwardly and outwardly, so that the gases are prevented from passing upwardly to the hand of the person using the toy, and, furthermore, the flange acts as a resonator to increase the loudness of the noise, which is further intensified by the fact that the concussion is directed downwardly against the pavement.
What is claimed is- 1. A cane having a ferrule including a socket portion in which the end of the body of the cane is held and a tubular lower portion spaced downwardly from the socket portion and connected thereto by means of a neck both ends of the tubular portion being open, said tubular portion being adapted to receive an upwardly-directed shell or cap in its lower end, and the lower end of the socket portionhaving an outwardly and downwardly directed Iiange projecting beyond the tubular portion, said ange being spaced from the upper end of the tubular portion and disposed in the path of discharge therefrom to receive the gases from the tubular portion and deflect them downwardly.
2. A cane comprising a body portion and a ferrule portion in which'the body portionis engaged, the ferrule having a socket which receives the body portion and an open-ended tubular lower portion connected to the socket portion and spaced downwardly therefrom,
and adapted to receive a shell to discharge its gases upwardly through the tubular portion, the socket portion having an outwardly and downwardly projecting resonating-ange extending outwardly beyond the tubular portion, said flange being spaced from the upper end of the tubular portion and disposed in the path of discharge therefrom to receive the gases of explosion therefrom and deflect them downwardly. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. JUDY.
