BRANDING IRON. A No. 464,913. Patented Deo. 8, 1891.
[M i l Juil-1 UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
AUSTIN B. BRAY, OF GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRANDING-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,913, dated December 8, 1891.
Application tiled May 29, 1891. Serial No. 394.582. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN B. BRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Gloucester, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Portable Branding- Iron, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to provide a portable branding-iron that can be used for the purpose of branding any kind 'of a wooden box, cask, or barrel, and any of the uses to which a branding-iron can and maybe applied. In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section and partial elevation of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the back of the branding-plate and the branching legs.
My invention relates to improvements in portable branding-irons which are heated by a naphtha or other uid reservoir torch and in which the branding-plate is always heated to a uniform degree of temperature when in use.
My object is to improve the construction and operation of heating a portable brandingiron; and my invention consists of a portable brandingiron continuously heated by the iiarne of an automatic naphtha or other fluid reservoir torch and in the several other novel features of construction and operation hereinaiter described, and set forthin the claims hereto annexed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents an outer cylindrical jacket of metal open at its bottom and partially open at its side and top and provided with perforations a to assure perfect combustion, which forms a combustion chamberor reservoir. This reservoir is provided at its lower open end with a brandin g-plate B, of slightly less circumference than the lower edge of the said reservoir, the branding-plate being provided on its back at its outerperiphery with a rearwardly-extending attaching-ange b, to which are secured by bolts or rivets the downwardly-extending legs c of the handle C, which hold the brandingplate in position, and is provided on its face with suitable branding -lette-IS. The lower ends of the legs c preferably ext-end down into the space formed between the inner lower edge of the outer inclosing jacket A and the periphery of the branding stamp or plate, while their upper ends are suitably secured to the handle C at the center of the top of the combustion-chamber A. The handle C extends upwardly above the top of the combustion-chamber a considerable distance and terminates in a hand-grasp c. At a suitable distance above the top of the combustionchamber and below the hand-grasp a laterally-extending arm CZ, having an angularlybent outer end, is secured to the handle tor engaging with a band or loop d on the upper part of the torch D, as shown. A brace or support d2 extends laterally through the side opening in the combustion-chamber A from the ends of two of the legs c, the support being held to the legs by a bolt and nut or otherwise suitably secured and adapted to hold the lower or ire end of the torch. The torch D may be of any approved style of reservoirtorch adapted to hold and burn naphtha or any other suitable burning iuid or oil, the essential requirement of the torch being that it be provided with a reservoir for containing the iiuid and means for regulating the supply of oil or fluid to the burning end of the torch. A suitable torch for this purpose would be that shown in Letters Patent No.
382,558, granted May S, 1888; but any other suitable construction might be adopted and subserve the same purpose. The torch is provided near its lower end witha handle d3 to be used in removing the torch from the combustion-chamber, and which also subserves as a support to the torch, as it is adapted to rest on the edge of the support or brace d2. By iilling the reservoir of the torch with naphtha iiuid or with any suitable oil and inserting the lower end of the torch into the combustion-chamber close to the back of the branding plate or stamp and applying a light to the lower end of the torch a continuous and powerful heat is obtained and the branding-plate kept constantly heated to a high degree for branding boxes, barrels, and the like, and by the formation of a space between the branding-plate and the inclosing jacket and the perforations at the upper part of the combustionchamber a very perfect combustion is secured. It will also be observed that by forming the torch with a reservoir for oil or naphtha tluid, which is attached to and can be transported with the branding-iron, a portable hand branding-iron is produced which can be carried from place to place with great convenience IOO to the articles to be stamped, instead of bringing the articles to be branded to the branding-Hon, as is the case with many large devices used for this purpose.
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a. portable hand branding-iron, the coinbinatlon of the outerinclosing perforated jacket forming a combustion-chamberwhich 1s open at its bottom and partially open at its top, a branding-stamp of less diameter than the lower end of the outer inclosing jacket, and a torch, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a portable handl branding-iron, the coinblnation ot' the outerinclosingperforated jacket forming a colnbustio'n-chamber which is open at its bottom and partially open at its top, a branding-plate arranged at and of less diameter than the lower end of the outer inclosiug jacket and provided with attachmg-iianges, supportingdegs attached at their lower ends to said plate and at their upper ends to or near the lower end of the handle, and a reservoir-torch, substantially as described. 2 3. In a portable hand branding-iron, the combination of the outer inclosing perforated jacket forming a combustion-chamber which is open at its bottornand partially open at its top, a branding-plate arranged at and of less 3 diameter than the lower end of the outer inclosing jacket and provided with attachingliang'es, supportinglegs attached at their lower ends to said flanges and at their upper ends to the handle of the iron, a reservoir- 5 torch, a brace or support extending laterally from the inclosing` jacket forholdingr the lower end of the torch, and'a handle provided with a laterally-extending arin for supporting the upper end of the torch, substantially as de- 4= scribed.
