SELF-HEATING CURLiNG-IRON."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,297, dated December 19,1893.
Appnmion rieti February 27,1893. semina-163,880. or@ maar.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, EUGENE FONTAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State ot Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates more particularly to that class ofcurling irons which are provided with means for heating the same, and my invention consists in the peculiar construction, and arrangement of the curling rod in connection with a self heating device, all as more fully hereinafter described and shown in the drawings, in which- Figure lis an elevation of my improved curling iron. Fig. 2 is a central section with the hinged joint opened. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line .n ,`in Fig. l. v
A is the hollow handle inclosing a wick tube B which is closed at the bottom bya lling.
E is a bell shaped cap inclosing the burner. It is hinged ata to an annular flange F, formed around the burner and which fits into a corresponding recess formed in the base of the cap. A locking spring G is secured to the cap and is adapted to engage with the flange F and thereby lock the cap in position.
The cap E and ange F are provided with a number of apertures suitable to admit air to sustain the flame inside the cap when the wick is lighted and to form an escape for the products of combustion. Into the top of this cap is secured a solid curling rod H of copper or other metal forming a good conductor ot' heat. This rod extends through the cap into the interior thereof and forms to a greater or less extent an inner lining thereto. This I preferably accomplish in a simple manner by dividing the end of the rod into several parts I and inserting the rod far enough so that by peening over the divided ends, they line the inner Wall of the cap or rat-hera portion thereof, so as to leave enough space for the flame and gases of combustion to pass out. After peening over and`flattening the ends out more or less they may be bent away from the Wall of the cap so as to be out of contact with the metal of the cap. By this construction of the curling rod, the flame instead of heating the cap heats the ends of the rod and the heat which it thus receives is directly conducted through the whole length of the rod and makes it very effective as a curling iron, as the Whole heat of the flame is expended on the curling iron, while the cap remains comparatively cool, at least enough to prevent injury to the hands from burning.
The curling iron is provided wlth the usual pivoted jaw L, which has a thumb piece M and a spring N adapted to normallyclose the jaw around the curling iron, the said jaw being of the usual semi-cylindrical shape to fit the curling rod. 1
What I claim as my invention is l. In a curling iron the combination with a reservoir handle, a burner on the end thereof, a perforated cap movably secured on the handle and extending over the burner, and a curling iron secured centrally in the cap its inner end entering the cap and separated longitudinally from a point directly over the burner, the respective members of the separated portion being curved outwardly t0 a point adjacent to the inner Wall of the cap, and around the burner, substantially as described. s'
2. In a curling iron the combination with a handle having a burner thereon, a perforated cap over the burner, and a curling iron secured to the cap having its inner end split apart, iiattened and flared-outwardly in opposite directions around theburner, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE FONTAINE.
