SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 702,977, dated June 24, 1902.
Application iled February 26, 1902. Serial No. 95,702. (No model To @ZZ wtont it nifty concern:
Be it known that I, Gascon S. MADANCY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pascoag, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, more particularly foldable or collapsible paper boxes, and has for its general object to provide an advantageous box` for holding icecream and the like.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one embodiment of my invention as it appears when folded or collapsed; Fig. 2, a perspective View of the box set up ready for use, and Fig. 3 a vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views ofthe drawings.
In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the box is made of paper and so that it is susceptible of being readily folded or collapsed and as readily opened or set up for use. It comprises a body A, tapered to a point and closed at its lower end and having cover-flaps a b and a base B, connected to the body and designed to hold it in an upright position on a table, counter, other support. By virtue of the body being tapered to a point at its lower end it will be observed that when the box is filled with ice-cream or similar substance and is opened and inverted all of the cream will drop from the body in a block corresponding in shape to said body. It will also be observed that the base B forms a convenient handle for inverting the box, as stated'.
The body A is preferably pyramidal in form, as illustrated, and in addition to the cover-flaps a b it comprises four walls c, the meeting edges of which are joined in a flexible manner, so as to permit of the body being folded or collapsed, as shown in Fig. l. The base B is preferably of truncated-pyramid form and comprises four walls d. The meeting edges of these walls are joined in a ilexible manner, and two of the walls are creased or otherwise designed to fold on the lines e, (shown in Fig. 2,) this in order to enable the base to be'folded or collapsed with the body after the manner shown in Fig. l. surrounds the lower portion of the body and medium of an adhesive and a strip f, which latter surrounds the upper ends of the base wallsd and is connected to said walls and the walls of the body by adhesive.
folded or collapsed, as shown in Fig. l, so as to take up but a minimum amount of space. W'hen it is desired to use a box, the same stance, after which the flaps ct b are closed and securedin such position by inserting the it. is desired to discharge the cream from the box is inverted, when the cream will drop from the body A in the formof a block corresponding in shape to the body. From this only facilitates the removal of the ice-cream from the body, but gives an ornamental form to the mass of cream.
It will berreadily appreciated that when equipped with'a bail-tape g my improved box may be carried quite as conveniently as the ordinary icecream box; also, that the im proved boxis compact and ornamental in construction and may be produced almost, if not quite, as cheaply as the ordinary box.
The ends of the tape g are preferably secured between opposite walls c of the body and additional walls or layers of paper c' secured by adhesive to the said walls c.
The lower portion of the body-t'. e., the portion below the strip f-is preferably ofy a double thickness, this in order to increase the strength of thebox.
Vhile designed more particularly for holding ice-cream and similar substance, my improved box may obviously be used to advantage when desired for holding candy, small cakes, and the like.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A box comprising a body tapered to a The base is unfolded and filled with cream or like sub tongue of ilap a in the slit of flap b. Vhen.
it follows that the shape ofthe body A-notl is connected thereto,` preferably through the In practice the boxes precedent to use are box,' the cover-flaps a b are opened and` the four flexibly-joined Wells, and equipped withl cover-flaps, and the foldableV or collapsible base surrounding and Connected to lche exte- 15 rior of the lower portion of the body; said base being formed of four flexibly-joined Walls, and having creases in' two of its walls.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set; my hand in presence of 'two subscribing witzo nesses.
