UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'l
EDMUND O. GLADWIN, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
g M u STAcH-s- GfUjA-RD.
SPECIFICATION forming para or :lettersratentiaroagreo, dated June 17, 1902.
Application tied Novpemtf'ze, 1'901. serial No". sabati-(N0 modem To 1f/ZZ whom it may concern.- ,f y
Be it known that I, EDMUND C. GIJADWIN, A a citizen of the United States, residingat Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Mustache-Protector; and I do 'hereby declarejrthe` following to be afull, clear, and exact'description of the same. l
The obj ect of the present invention is to provide a simple and effective protector where-l by the mustache is kept from being brought, into contact with food during eating, .it beingA more especially designed for wearwith-the eating of soup or drinking of beverages during the meal. y
The hereinafter-described guard may-be.y constructedof any suitable materialandthe" samemay be ornamented or colored aside! f sired. l
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a View disclosing4 the applicationn of the guard. Fig. 24is a rear view of the guard. Fig. 3 is affront view'of thefguard, and Fig. 4 is a side View of the same in ele-l vation. T
In the drawings the letters A A are used to indicate two comb-like members, which members are united at theirinner ends bysa central hinge A2. Each member -A A-is slightly curved, preferably, sopas to :partially partake of the shape of the lip over which it.
However, should themembers be constructed of pliable material the'same 'will readily shape itself. The teeth of each comb member gradually increases in height from the inner tooth l to outer tooth 2. A
To the front of each comb member there is attached by hinge'Ba' guard or coverplate B. These guardjvoricover plates ar'eprefer-V ably shaped toconform to the shape of the comb membersfto which they are hinged. It is not required"thattheguard or cover plates be constructed oflfthe same material as the comb member, for the same may be made much lighter and more finished than the said members.
To the outer side edges of each guard or cover plate is hinged a temple B2, the free end ofthetemplesbeing curved, so'as to t over the, ears of thewearer in order to hold the guardor.mustache-protector in place. The
lower edge a offeach guard or cover plate is g inwardly ilanged'and serrated. When;used, the teeth of the comb members are run upwardly through the mustache in order to holdgsame away from the lip. The fguard or cover plates are closed upon the mustache,I holding same to the comb mem- 1bers, and each temple ,B2 secured over the ear "oflthe'vwea'rer'of the protector in order to hold Athe,.sameginproper position.
The mustache is thusprotected and hidden from view while the ,wearerk is! eating and kept from coming finto contact'with the-food as conveyed toward the'mouth.l p
.'By the use ofthe present invention the soiling oficlothes by reason of soup, llv &c., drop- "ping from the mustache thereon-'is obviated.
As the cover or guard plates'are closed upon the comb members, thev serrated edges thereof engage withthe mustache.' By hinging the members lthesame maybe closed or folded over;to fit withina small case.
4The essential features ofthe present inven- A tion residednthe employment of the comblike members for holding the mustache out of the way,` combined with guard or cover plates attached thereto and provided with nieans for holding the protector to the wearer thereof.l
e Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed as new,"` and desired to be protected by Letters'llPatent, is-
A device of the character described comprising two comb members flexibly connected together at their inner adjacent ends, and guard-plates, of approximatelyr the samersize as the' comb'members, flexibly connected to the bottoms of said comb members and adapted to fold upwardly thereupon substantially as described. l i
t In witness whereof I havehereuntosetfmy hand.
EDMUND C. GLADWIN.
