Improvements in Combination Furniture, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide an article of furniture which may serve as a bed or as a divan and which is composed of separate hinged parts adapted to be extended when used as a bed or folded into proper position for use as a divan; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a combination article of furniture constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in thefollowing specification, of which theaccompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in whichi of my improved combinati'onlajrticle of furniture when used as a bed; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view of a detail of the perspective view of details of the construction on an enlarged scale and showing theparts partially in use as a divan; Fig. 5, an endview of the framework of the said article of furniture, showing the parts in position for use as a divan; Fig. 6, a perspective view of the divan complete, and Fig. 7 a plan and end view of a railingwhich I employ in connection with my improved article of furniture when used as a'divan.

In the practice of my invention I provide an oblong rectangular main frame composed of three

separate parts

5, 6, and 7 which are hinged together at 8, and said main frame is preferably composedof angleiron L-shaped in cross-section, and, asshown inFig. 1, the central part 6 of the main frame is longer than the other parts, and the body portion of the entire frame is filled in by a bed-spring 9,

corners by plates 12, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and saidbed-spring 9 is also rectangular in form and is connected with the main frame by strong spiral springs 13 both at the ends and sides, said spiral springs being connected with the plates 12.

The part 7 of the main frame forms the seat portion of the device when used as a divan ,and is' provided with corner-legs l4, preferably provided With casters or rollers 15, and said legs are connected by side bars 16, which are connected by transverse bars 17, on which are preferably placed spiral bars 18, which support that portion of the bed spring 9 which forms the top of the part 7 of the main frame.

e The sides-0f the central portion 6 of the main frame adjacent to the part 5 of said frame areconnected by a transverse rod 6 for the purpose of giving proper strength and rigidity to the said frame, and the position of the parts of the main frame when used as a bed is that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the position of said parts when used as a divan is that shown in Figs-5 and 6, and for the purpose of holding the parts of the main frame in proper position,"so as to adapt the device to serve for either of the purposes specified, 1 hinge to theend of the central portion6 of the main frame adjacent to the part 5 of said frame and within the angles of the side bars of the frame, as shown at 19 in Fig. 4, side legs 20, preferably provided with castersor rollers 21, and these legs are provided at their hinged ends with angular extensions 22 and at the sides thereof adjacent to the "part 5 of the main frame with hooks 23, and Ipivotally connected with the opposite sides of the part 5 of the main frame at 21is a yokeshaped attachment 25, which is adapted to engage with the hooks 23, as shown in Fig. 2, when the device is used-as a bed and to hold the legs 20 in proper "position.

Pivotally connected with the inner sides of the legs 20, as shown at 26, are rods or bars 27, which are secured at 28 with locking-bars 29, mounted in keepers 30, secured in the angle of the side bars of the part 6 of the main frame, and the inner corner-posts 14 of the part 7 of the main frame are provided with keepers 31, adapted to receive the ends of the locking-bars 29, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 4, 5, and 6.

When the device is used as a divan, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the separate parts are folded into the posit-ion shown in said figures, in which position the part 6 of the main frame is held in an upright position by the locking-bars 29, which enter the keepers 31, and in this position of said parts the legs are folded within the angles of the sides of the parts 6 of the main frame, as shown in dotted linesin Fig. 5,and the yoke-shaped attachment folds upwardly into the outer end of the part 5 of the main frame which is folded downwardly into the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and in this position of the parts a mattress, matting, or similar device 32 is placed on the frame, as shown in Fig. 6, and a molding 33 is preferably placed over the top of the

5 and 6 and rests on and covers the hinges 8, and this molding is of the form in cross-section shown at 33 in Fig. 7. The molding 33 is box-shaped in form and adapted to rest on the top of the

parts

5 and 6 when it is used; but this molding forms no part of this invention and may or may not be employed.

When it is desired to extend the parts of the main frame for use as a bed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the part 5 is raised into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 7, the yoke -shaped attachment 25 is swung upwardly thereinto, and the legs 20 are swung downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, and this last operation withdraws the lockingbolts 29 from the keepers 31 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the yokeshaped attachment 25 is connected with the hooks 23, as shown in said figure.

It will be understood that a mattress of any desired form and construction may be employed and that suitable covering or drapery may also be employed in connection with my improved combination article of furniture, and my invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations and amendments therein as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

It will be observed-that the bottom portions of the inner legs 14: of the part 7 of the main frame are curved outwardly, as shown at 14:, the object of this construction being to provide a firmer base and support for the device when used as a divan, the heaviest part thereof and the greatest strain being at the back, which is formed by the

5 and 6 of said frame. It'will also be apparent that by making the bed-spring 9 in the manner shown and described the said spring is easily folded at the points where the main frame is hinged; but this spring is not of my invention and any suitable spring may be employed.

It will be observed that the bed-spring 9 is secured to the top of the main frame or to the hinges 8, which connect the part 5 with the part 6 of the main frame, is at the lower part of the sides of said portions of the mainframe, and by making the springs 13 strong enough the part 5 will be held in a horizontal position thereby. It will also be'seen that the legs 20 are connected bya transverse bar 20, and are thus both operated at the same time and are both held in proper relative position, and said legs and bar 20 are connected by brace-rods 20 The part 6 of the main frame may also, when desired, be folded over the part 7 in order that the entire device may be packed in com pact form for shipment or other purposes.

Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A combination article of furniture com prising a main oblong frame composed of three separate parts hinged together, one of the end parts being provided with legs and the adjacent middle part being provided ad jacent to the opposite end part with hinged legs, said last-named end part and said legs being provided with locking devices and said legs and said first-named end part being also provided with looking devices whereby the legs of the middle part may be held at right angles thereto, and the middle part be held in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.

2. An article of furniture of the class described, comprising a main oblong frame composed of three separate hinged parts, one of the end parts being provided with legs and keepers, the middle part being provided adjacent to the opposite end part with hinged legs, said hinged legs being provided with hooks, and said last-named end part with a pivoted attachment operating in connection with said hooks, rods also pivotally connected with said hinged legs, and locking-bolts connected with said rods and operating in con nection with the keepers secured to the firstnamed end portion to hold the middle part in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.

3. A combination article of furniture comprising an oblong frame composed of three separate hinged parts provided with a bedspring connected with the sides and ends thereof by spiral springs, said bed-spring being foldable at the points where the parts of the main frame are hinged, and devices in IIO connection with one of the end parts of the main frame and with the middle part, for myinventionI have signed my name, in presholding the middle part in an upright posience of the subscribing witnesses, this 25th tion with reference to said. end part, the other day of March, 1901.
