To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WI LIAM H. DAVENPORT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Breakdown Guns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. A 1

This invention is in breakdown guns; and it seeks to provide means for securing the fore-end strap to the barrel. Heretofore it has been most commonto attach the fore-end strap fixedly to the fore-woodand so that when the fore-wood is removed from the barrel the said strap comes OE With it. In my improved construction the fore-wood may be removed independently and the strap will ordinarily remain'fixeduponthe barrel, although 7 it may, if sodesired, beseparated therefrom by the removal of asingle screw.

To assist in explaining my invention, the accompanying drawings have been provided, which serve to illustrate the same, as follows:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an arm fittedup with the newly-invented improvements. Fig. 2 shows in elevation, on a somewhat-en larged scale,the rear end of the barrel and also in section portions of the arm immediately related to the said barrel end. Fig. 3 is a crosssectional view of the arm, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of a certain element of the arm-,to wit, the fore-end strap, which forms the important feature of this invention.

Referring to the drawings, the letter a dc tallic rear end portion (corresponding to the present plate, 6) in such manner that the said rear end portion and fore-wood are practically a single structure and as such may be readily removed from or attached to the barrel. When thus made as a single structure, provision in the form of a readily-operated latch or catch is made for removably attaching the fore-wood to the barrel. My present improvement provides in a simple and inexpensive manner means whereby the fore-end strap may be rigidly attached to the barrel.

It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 of formed with semicircular recesses 6, adapted to cooperate with the frontend'ofthe gunframe a, and the upper portion of said block is recessed, as at e to fit snugly against the lower side of the gun-barrel. When the several parts of the gun are assembled, the rear end of the fore-wood f simply abuts the flat front face of the block 6 mortise, as is ordinarily practiced. This construction and arrangement of parts provides a convenient and cheap means for fixedly securing the fore-end strap to the barrel and instead of being secured thereto by tenon and ICO Signed at Norwich, Connecticut, this 27th day of July, 1901.
