Description
.QCAREY; SPRING AIR PISTOL.
Prentea :une 6,1876.
Pnfrniwr-zGrrrcn.
Anc;USTUS` c. CAREY, OF MALDEN, ASSIGNOR 'ro"ALBERTA A. POPE, fon4 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT INISPRING AIR-PlsToLs.
Specification forming part ofLetters Patent No.: 178,233, dated June 6, 1876; application led V' i February 16, 1876.
` Toa'll whom` 'it may concern:
Beit known 'that I, AUGUSTUS C. CAREY,
, of Malden, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Air` d v Pistols, of which' the` following is a specifica,`
tion: d n The drawings accompanyingthis specification represent, in Figure 1, a vertical and longitudinal section ot'an air-,pistol embody'- ing my improvements, whilelfig. 2'is a perspective view, and Fig.`3 a plan, of the adjacent ends of the barrel and air-magazine, the
former showing the barrel as'turned to one vside or exposed to receive a projectile.` Fig.
4, in said drawings, is a perspective view ot' the adjacent ends of the barreland air-charnber, showing a modification of my improvements. Fig". 5 is a viewotl astirrnp-rod to be explained. Y i
` 1 In these drawings, A represents the frame or Stock of the pistol, consisting of a straight cylinder whose interior, B, constitutes the air.
magazine or chamber. Within this air-chamber Bis disposed a springimpelled plunger, C, to which is" attached a rod, D, that passes rearward through the cap E, which closes the rear end of said chamber, the rod D serving to cock or set the plunger against the stress ultaneously with this, and contain nothing, per se, which I now claim.` i
4 My present improvement `relates tothe peculiar method of attaching the barrel to the st ock to convert the pistol into a breech-loading one; and'consists in pivoting such barrel at its rear end to the front end of the air-magazine to one side'of the ,common axes of the two, in such manner that by turning or partially rotating the barrel upon its pivot its bore is exposed and the projectile readily inserted. c .l
`My present improvements further embrace the employment, in connection with the plunger, of a rod or strap' bearing at bottom a vstirrup in lwhich to place the users foot, and
Y provided atthe other end with a hook orI other means of seizing hold of the rearfend of the` plunger-rod, in order that ample power may" be obtained to overcome thestressof the plunger-spring in cooking such4 plunger. n
The drawings accompanying this specification represent' thel barrel at G as secured at its rear 4end to an annular disk or hub, H,
which is pvoted at` its lower'part` to the front end of theair-magazine B, and eccentrically with respect to the bore ofthe latter and of the barrel. i y f When thebarrel is in a closed or -firing position its bore a is in alignment with, and constitutes, with a reduced diameter, a continua,- `tion ofthe bore of the air-chamber, and the contiguous faces ofthe hub vH and air-niagazine B are disposed obliquely to the axes of the two, in order that when the barrel is returned from an open to a closed position the partsshall'crowd against each other and effeet an air-tight joint. y
A modification of this adaptation of the barrel would be,.as shown in Fig. 4 of thedrawings, to add to the front of the air niagazine or cylinder A al lower branch or support, b, whose outer end is tubular, as shown at c, to receive and support in part the barrel G, which slides Within it, the depression or space f intervening between the tubular support b and air-magazine permitting ofthe introduction of the Vprojectile `in the barrelwhen the latter is pulled forward.
The rear end of thebarrel is let'into a cor`` responding' countersink in thel air-magazine to obtain a close joint, and I prefer toY add to 4 the top of the barrel a pointed stop or guide, g, d which` enters la corresponding' notch, 'd, in the cylinder A, and determines the proper posi-l One of the screws e which tion of the. barrel. confine the guide g to the barrel serves to determine the distance to which such barrel shall be pulled forward in the act of loading.
In this modicat-ion the barrel is pulled outward until the screw or stop e abuts against v the` tubular support, which opens or exposes l the rear end of such barrel. The projectile and the latter returned to place.
H', in the accompanying drawings, repreis now inserted in this open end of the barrel,
sents'a rod orstrap, or equivalent 'objeet, pro vided at one end lWith etA hook, g', to enter a-n` eye, h, inthe rear end of theplunger-rod D, or otherwise adapted to seize, holdfof such rod, and at its other end provided with :t stirrnp o'r handle, ,in which the users foot may be placed to obtainA great power 4over the. t stress of the plunger-spring, and relieve the hand of the user of the labor of contracting such spring in cooking 0 1' setting the plunger.
I clairne l. In .austin-spring pistol, the air-chamber or` cylinder, in conbinationfwith the bari-ei eoeentrieallyipivoted to the front of-the'cylinder, and, when inrng position, communioating at its rearfwith 'an air-passage leading from theeylinder, as shown Landset forth.
2. The rod H', or its` equivalent, in oombi- A 'nation with the plunger C and its rod D, substantially as'andfor purposes stated.
AUGUSTUS C; CAREY,
Witnesses:
F. CURTIS, W. E. BOARDMAN.
