SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 700,991, dated May 27, 1902.
Application fil d January 16, 1900. Serial No. 1,590. (No model.)
T0 (0% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AARONP. STORES, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Owego, in the county of Tioga, State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Mica Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to various new and useful improvements in mica chimneys, and more particularly to such chimneys as are provided with tapering upper ends-as, for
instance, those used in the headlight-lamps of locomotives. The special character of mica, while permitting a very durable chimney to be made, prevents its being formed with a taper at the upper end of the chimney unless, of course, at a great sacrifice of cost. My improved chimney is therefore provided with a metallic tapered upper portion, and my invention resides particularly in the manner in which this tapered portion is secured in place to the main or mica section of the chimney.
In carrying my invention into effect I construct a cylindrical mica chimney of the required diameter, the chimney being formed of a series-generally four-of panels of mica, secured in place between vertical ribs, which are S-shaped in cross-section, whereby the edges of two adjacent panels may be received in the two pockets or recesses of each rib and the metal thereof pressed down upon the mica panels to clamp them tightly in place. Strength is offered by means of a metal band at the bottom of the chimney which extends continuously around the same and-which is fastened at its ends in one of the ribs referred to. This band may be turned up at its bottom, so as to further support the mica sec tions. At the top a similar band is secured in place, which offers additional support and which acts to properly space the panel-holding ribs referred to. The tapered metal upper portion of the chimneyis introduced within the upper band referred to with as tight a joint as possible to prevent air-currents from circulating through the same and is secured in place by having lugs extended through openings in said upper portion,'said lugs being formed integrally with two or more of the said panel-supporting ribs.
The whole construction is very simple and cheap, and the resulting article is very superior in its appearance and effectiveness.
In order that my invention may be better understood, attention is directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chimney; Fig. 2, a vertical section; Fig. 3, an enlarged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, an enlarged section on the line 4.- 4. of Fig; 2; Fig. 5, an enlarged section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are enlarged perspective views of portions of the different styles of ribs used for supporting the mica panels.
In all of the above views corresponding parts are represented by the same numerals of reference.
1, 1 1 and 1 represent four vertical ribs,
each being made of sheet metal and havinga general S shape in cross-section, as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. 2 2 represent four panels of mica, which are held in place, as shown, within the pockets or recesses formed by reason of the particular cross-section of such ribs.
In assembling the improved chimney it is preferable to first secure the ribs to the sev* eral panels as a fiat sheet, and in order to protect the free outer edge of the exposed mica sheet such edge is provided with a metal binding 3, as shown. A bottom strip iis secured to the ribs 1, 1 and 1 by having its lower edge 5 bent over upon the lower ends of said ribs, so as to firmly clamp them in place. The said strip is secured within the proper recess formed in the rib 1 in any suitable way.
6 represents a narrower strip secured to the upper ends of the ribs in the same way and for the same purpose as the lower strip 4, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 5. The two strips 4; and 6 act effectively to maintain the ribs in their vertical positions and to keep said ribs properly spaced. When the parts are assembled as above described as a fiat sheet, the whole structure is bent around a suitable cylindrical former and the protected edge 3 of the mica panel and the free edges of the strips at and 6 are inserted within the open pocket of the rib 1, as shown. After these parts have been thus inserted in said pocket the parts are locked firmly together by passing lugs 1 on the strips land 6, respectively, through openings 11, formed in the rib 1, and bending said lugs over upon said rib, as shown. In Fig. 7 the opening 11, near the upper end of the rib 1, is illustrated.
Obviously the chimney may be provided with a greater or less number of ribs and panels, and such parts may be assembled in other Ways.
7 represents atapered upper section for the chimney, made preferably of sheet metal, and which is inserted within the overturned edge of the upper strip 6, as shown. The section 7 is provided with a rib or bead 8, fitting closely against the upper edge of said strip.
In order to hold the section '7 rigidly in place with respect to the lower portion of the chimin the top section '7.
It will be understood, of course, that the lugs 10 may be formed on all of the ribs, in which case the section 7 will be provided with four openings 9 for the reception of said lugs.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
As a new article of manufacture,'a mica chimney comprising a series of vertical ribs S-shaped in cross-section, a series of mica panels-secured within the recesses formed by said ribs, a band 4 at the bottom of the chimney having an upturned flange 5 which engages the lower end of said ribs, a band 6 at the top of the mica panels, said band being bent over upon the ribs, a plurality of lugs or tongues 10 carried by the ribs and located within the upper band, and a metallic tapering upper portion for the chimney provided with a cylindrical lower part and seated within the mica chimney with a beadSresting on the band 6 and having openings through which said lugs or tongues are passed internally, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 12th day of January, 1900.
