GARMENT.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letterslatent No. 700,903, dated May 27, 1902.
Application filed December 20,1901. berial No. 86,701. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in garments, and particularly to the waist closures or portions of said garments.
It consists in a garment having a waist portion formed with openings at the sides, flaps formed at said side openings and adapted to lap upon each other, and yielding means forv drawing in the waist portion at the open sides, the flaps preventing puckering or wrinkling at those points.
It further consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, 4 and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a person having on a pair of trousers made in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail inside view of the yielding adjustable side portion of the waist of a garment. Fig. 3 is a detail view looking at the outside of a garment waist portion, one of the lapping flaps being turned back to show the inner and outer yielding parts of the garment; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of a portion of a figure, showing a pair of trousers smoothly held in position.
The present invention is designed to set forth the manner of producing garments with waist portions which can be adjusted to fit smoothly and snugly upon the person of the wearer. It is suitable for mens, youths, or boys trousers, knee-pants, bicycle-pants, riding-trousers, overalls, base-ball, foot-ball, and golf or other sporting garments.
While my invention is adapted to any of the styles of garments just enumerated, yet I have illustrated the same as applied to trousers of the ordinary type, showing portions of the same in the drawings.
The features of the invention would remain the same whatever garment it was applied to.
The trousers 1 or other garment is formed with side openings 2 2. The waist portion of the. garment at the openings in the sides thereof is formed with flaps 3 and 4, the flap 3 extending inside the flap 4:, and the flap 4: overlying the edge of the flap 3, preferably to a considerable extent. The outer flap 4E is preferably joined to the inner flap 3 some little distance below the upper edge of the waist portion of the trousers, as at 5, so that there is considerable freedom of movement at the upper ends of the flaps. The inner flap may, if desired, be made of an integral piece of material with the rear portion of the trousers or may be made in a separate piece joined to the remainder of the trousers by a suitable seam. The inner flap may or may not have means for holding it in position, but is preferably provided with means for holding it from dropping down out of place. For this purpose I prefer to use a strap of any suitable material, elastic or non-elastic, as may be desired. In the drawings I have illustrated the said inner flap 3 as provided at its upper corner with a yielding or elastic band, as 6, which is preferably firmly stitched to the said inner flap, the other end of the elastic strap 6 being secured to the inner face of the outer flap 4, The end of the band or strap 6 which engages the flap 4 preferably extends a short distance between the lining or facing 7 of this portion of the trousers and the material of which the flap is made. The point where the strap enters between the lining and the goods is left open and free, and the said strap isonly at tached at its extreme end, so that it may move in and out between the lining and goods as it is stretched or relaxed. This construction operates very well, since it allows the strap 6 to be stretched, and yet will hold the inner flap 3 always in position to prevent puckering or bunching of the goods at this point. Of course the strap 6 might be se cured to the inner face of the outer flap 4; in other ways without departing from the spirit of the invention, the important point being to have a means within the trousers for holding the inner flap up and in proper position; otherwise it would be likely to fold inwardly and produce an uncomfortable feeling upon the person of the wearer, as Well as prevent a smooth appearance being obtained in the wearing of the garment.
The outer flap 4 is preferably formed with a projection forming a strap 8, which is adapted to engage any suitable fastening, as a buckle 9, secured to the rear section of the trousers. If a buckle is used for a fastening, the strap 8 is preferably formed with a series of apertures 8, which may be reinforced by eyelets or other similar means or by'stitchingthe edges of such apertures with a butsuch a buckle or fastening to the goods of' the trousers by a yielding connection-as, for instance, a strap of elastic material, as at 10 so that the said buckle is joined to the trousers by a yielding means. It will thus be seen that the flaps are each preferablyjoined to the opposing section of the trousers by a yielding connection, thus avoiding an inconvenient and stiff condition of the waist-closure when the bodyis bent or assumes various pos tions. In adjusting the waist to the person of the wearer all fullness of the waist is taken up and the trousers or other garments are made to fit snugly upon the body of the wearer by the straps 8 and the buckles 9. The
inner strap 6 will not only yield sufficiently to the adjustment of the outer flap 4:, but will also further yield when necessary to accommodate the bending or other movement of the body of the person wearing the garment. The use of said adjustable yielding connections obviates the necessity of using an adjustable strap at the rear of the trousers or other garment, and yet enables the wearer to draw the waist snugly in position, the trousers fitting perfectly at every point around the waist. A loop or strap 11 is arranged adjacent to the buckle 9 to receive and hold in place the outer end of the strap 8 after the said strap has been adjusted. Such a structure is admirably adapted for all sort of trousers where it is not desired to use suspenders or similar supports, and especially where persons desire to go without a coat or outer garment.
Although I have shown the outer adj ustingstrap 8 as secured to the front portion of the trousers and the buckle or other fastening as secured to the rear section of the trousers, I do not wish to be limited to this arrangement, since the parts may be reversed, the strap being on the rear section of the trousers, while the buckle is onthe front section of the same, without departing in the least from the spirit of the invention.
Although I'have shown and heretofore described the strap or band 6 for holding up the inner flap as secured to the inner face of the outer flap by stitching, yet it will be apparent that I might secure the said strap in position by a button, buckle, or other adjustable means without departing from the spirit of the invention. In using a band at this point which is formed of a non-elastic material it is of course best to employ an attaching means which is adjustable.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. Agarmenthavinga Waist-closure formed with openings at the sides, overlapping flaps at said openings, means for drawing the flaps one above the other to take up slack at the waist without bunching or puckering and means for holding the inner flap up in position, substantially as described.
2. A garment having a waist-closure formed with side openings, overlapping flaps at said openings, and means for adjusting or drawing in the waist at the said openings, said means having a yielding portion insuring a snug fit, the fiaps preventing any puckering or bunching of the garment at these points, substantially as described.
3,. A garment having a waist-closure formed with side openings, inner and outer flaps at said openings, means for holding the inner flap from dropping or sagging out of position, and means attached to the outer flap for taking in any slack in the waist portion of the garment and adjusting it to suit the person of the wearer of the garment, substantially as described.
4. A garment having a waist-closure formed with side openings, inner and outer flaps arranged at these openings, a yielding connection joining the inner flap and the inner face of the outer fiap for yieldingly holding the said inner flap in position and permitting said flap to accommodate itself to the adjustment of the outer flap, and means for adjusting the outer flap to draw the waist of the garment snugly about the body of the wearer, substantially as described.
5. Agarlnent having a waist portion formed with openings having inner and outer flaps, a yielding strap secured to the inner flap at one end and extending between the lining and goods of the outerflap where it is attached at its other end to the said outer flap, and means for adjusting the outer flap so as to take up slack in the waist, the yielding strap of the inner flap accommodating itself to such an adjustment and maintaining the parts in a smooth position, substantially as described.
6. A garment having 21 waist portion with side openings formed therein, inner and outer flaps at the said openings, the outer flaps overlying the inner flaps to a considerable extent, a yielding means for holding the inner flap in proper position so as not to pucker or Wrinkle beneath the other flap, and a yieldin g means for holding the outer flap in proper position, substantially as described.
7. A garment having a Waist portion formed with side openings, inner and outer flaps arranged at these openings, an elastic strap secured to the inner flap and connecting it with the inner face of the outer flap, a strap secured to the outer flap, a buckle or other fastening for engaging said strap, a yielding means connecting said buckle with the goods of the trousers, the inner yielding straps yielding in correspondence with the adjustment of the outer yielding buckle connections, substantially as described.
8. A garment havinga waist-closure formed with suitable openings, inner and outer flaps at said openings, means for securing the outer flaps in place, and bands or straps for securing the inner flaps in positions corresponding always with the adjustments and arrangement of the outer flaps, substantially as described.
9. A garmenthaving a waist-closure having an opening, inner and outer flaps covering the opening, an elastic connection joining the inner flap with the opposite side of the opening, and means for adjusting the outer flap.
10. A garment having a waist-closure having an opening, inner and outer overlapping fiaps covering the opening, elastic connection joining the inner flap to the opposite side of the opening, and elastic means for adjusting the outer flap.
11. A garment having a waist-closure having side openings, inner and outer overlapping flaps covering each opening, an elastic connection joining the inner flap to the 0pposite side of. each opening, and elastic means for adjusting the outer flap.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC DAVIS.
