.'Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM PEARCE, of Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail-Fullers; and `I- do hereby declare the following, when v'fairen in connection with the accompanying drawtached view, in side elevation, of the foot;

My invention relates to an improvement in uail-pullers,tlie object being to produce asimple, compact,.convenient, and effective puller constructed with particular reference to fewness of parts, durability, and lightness.

With these ends in view my invention consists in a nail-puller having certain details of construction, and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and -particularly recited in the claim. v

In carryingV out my invention as" herein shown I employ two plates 2 2, corresponding to eachother and rounded at their forward and rear ends and tapering from front to rear. These plates are rigidly secured at their forward ends by rivets 3 or otherwise to the opposite faces of the forward jaw 4 and extend rearward beyond the rear or outer edge of the rear jaw 5, which is free to move back and forth between them. Preferably two or more rivets will be employed to secure the plates to the forward jaw, so that they cannot possibly turn thereon.d Their projecting rear ends receive a bolt 6, having a nut 7, upon which the foot 8 swings. The upper or inner end of this foot is shaped to form a cam 9, the extremity of which is cut away to form a groove 10, which conforms to the rounded rear or cammed outer edge 1l of the rear jaw- The parte def the jaws are brought "together and the nail seized after the handle 12 of the nail-puller has been moved through a very short arc. This is obviously advantageous, as it pulls the nail straighter and with' less effort than if it ss. 'y

a rolling action beginn-ing at or near the middle of the foot and then extending outward to the end thereof, as in many prior construc# tions.

The coaction of the cam 9 with the con` vex outer edge 11 of the jaw 5 at a point above the greatest conveXityof the said edge causes the cam to force the jaw downward under the nail, whereas in some nail-pullers Ithe construction is j ust the opposite, the tendency being exerted to lift the nail-puller away from the nail. 4

It will be seen from the foregoing that the foot 6 of my improved device is constructed with particular reference to acting through its extreme ends onl the door at its extreme lower-end and on the movable jaw at its extreme upper end rather than between its ends. through a long convex inneredge, as heretofore used. This results vinthe very substantial advantages already set forth of reducing the bending of the nails to the minimum in pulling them and in driving the movable jaw downward under the nails ypreparatory to gripping them. s

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes in the construction herein shown and described maybe made. Iv

would therefore have itunderstoodthat'ldo not limit myself to the said construction, but hold myself at liberty to make such variations therefrom as fairly fall withinthe spirit and scope of my invention. I am aware, however,

that nail-pnllers have been constructed with two plates riveted to one jaw and extending rearward beyond the other jaw, with a foot pivotally mounted between the projecting ends of the plates, andtherefore do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a nail-puller, the combination with the rear and forward jaws thereof, the outer edge of the rear jaw being convex, of two plates rigidly secured by their forward ends to the opposite faces of the forward jaw and extending rearwardly beyond the outer edge of the rear jaw which is free to move between them, a pivot passing through the projecting rear ends of the plates, and a foot hung upon the said pivot and shaped to act at its ends rather than between the same, its `upper end being formed with a eann'coaeting with the said convex outer edge of the rear jaw at a point above the greatest conVexity thereof to force the said jaw downward under the nail, as Well as inward toward the other jaw, and the lower end of the said foot constituting a fulcrnln upon which the entire device turns as upon a center.
