To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALBERT KARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotteand State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in a CombinedSpring-Fastener and Corner-Stay for Beer Oases, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to combined springfasteners and corner-stays for beer and other boxes; and the object 'of 'my invention is to gether and protect them from, the-effects of rough handliugin loading and unloading from cars or wagons. v 1 f My invention comprisesa corner-stay 'se cured on a corner-of the b'o'x,*an upwardly-' projecting shackle integral therewith passing through an op'ening in the lid, and a 'springbolt mounted on the lidin-pos'ition to engage the shackle, all" of which parts will be fully has "described hereinafter with reference tothe accompanying drawings, in' w hich' g Figure 1 isa perspective 'viewof a box or u case provided with my improved. fasteners and corner-stays. Fig. 2 is aperspectiveview of one of the corner-stays audits shackle.
Fig.3 is'an elevation of the same. 7 Fig, 4 rep? resents the opeuingin the lid through which [the shackle extends whenthe lid "is closed. v Fig. 5 is a top plan view of one of the boltthe bolt. 1 x
housings. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan of the same,
, showing the bolt. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of the-housing,;the bolt, and the portion; of the lid to'whic h-the housing islsecured, showing also the shackleengaged by Fig. 2 represents one of the two corner-stays which are secured to the upper front corners of the box, respectiv'ely, and designated by 1 1 Each corner-stay comprises two plates 2 3 and a horizontal plate 4. Plates 2 and 3 are screwed to the sides of the box. Plate2 projects above plate 3 ate, as shown in Figs.'1, 2, and 3, to form a guard forthe corner of the lid 6. Plate 3 mightbe exte'n'ded'in the same manner, but
I prefer to makeit flush with the bottom of the lid6. I
on each of the corner-stays 1 1 is cast an u pwardly-extendin g shackle 7, having a notch hereinafter. close :over the shackle 7, a recess 10 is cut in the lid, as shown in Fig. 4.
The bolt 9 (shown in Figs.. 6 and 7) is in the form of a thin plate mounted slidably in a housing 12,seeured to the lid 6. A rectangular hole13is formed in the housing 12 to'receive the shackle 7, and in the bolt 9 is arectangu- I 8 therein to beentered by aboltil', described A To permit the lid of the box to lar opening 14, through which the shackle.
passes when the lid is closed. Mounted ina recess inthe housing 12 isfa spring-pressed pin 15, which holds, the bolt 9'inengagement with the notch Sin the shackle 7. QThe move-' ment'of the bolt 9 inonedirection is limited,
by shoulders 9,, formed thereon, Fig. 6, which I abut against theshoulderedfrecess in the bottom of the housing 12. 'Ahead 9-ls cast on the'bolt 9, by'which thebolt may be pressed in against the spring toreleasethe shackle 7.
ing that the shackle 7 is omitted therefrom.
Letters Patent of theUnited States, is-' A combined spring fastener. and corner- A hole 16 is madethrough theshackle 7 and through thehousing 12 inaline'ment there- ;with," so that awire with a sealattached may be passed through both, whereby the lid of theboxcannot beopenedwithout breaking theseal. 1 I
The: othersixcorners of the box arepro vided'with corner-stays 17, having the same general form as that shown in Fig." 2, except}.
