Description

(No Model.)
S. S. BARRETT.
- BOX PASTENER.
Patented Mar. 15, 1892.
Aw c I NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAM S. BARRETT, OF SALEM, MISSOURI.
BOX-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,968, dated March 15, 1892 Application filed December 12,1891. Serial No. 7- (No 11105610 To aZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, SAM S. BARRETT,a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, 1n the county of Dent and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Crates, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in box-fasteners; and it has for its general obgect to provide abox-fastener of an exceedingly cheap, simple, and durable constructron, adapted to be readily manipulated to look a cover upon a crate or box, and as read- 11y manipulated to unlock the cover.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects the invention consists in the pecuhar construction, certain novel combinations, and the adaptation of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, partly in section, of a crate or box embodying my improved devices. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line so a; on Fig. 1,lookmg toward the end of the box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the beveled latch removed, and Fig. 4. is an elevation of the wedge for fixing the latch. Referring by letter to the said drawings, A 1nd cates a crate or box, which may be of the ordinary or any approved form, and is provided at one end with the transverse ledge B, whlch is provided in its inside with transverse sockets a, for a purpose presently to be described. The opposite end wall of the crate or box A is recessed, as better illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and covering said recess on the inside and outside of the box is a casing O, which is bent, as shown, over the upper edge of the end wall and is provided in its bent portion with a slot 1) for the passage of the latch and the fixing-wedge presently to be described.
D indicates the top of the crate or box,
which is provided at one end with a transverse strip E, from which extend lugs c, which are designed in practice to take into the sockets a of the ledge B, as better illustrated in Fig. 1. At its opposite end the cover D is provided with another transverse strip F, which is provided in turn with a slot d at a point to align with the slot 1) in the casing 0. Taking transversely through the strip F and the slot (1 therein is a bolt e, which takes through the loop-wedge G, which tapers toward its lower end, as illustrated.
I'I indicates the locking-latch of my improved device, which has its lower end enlarged and beveled on one side, as illustrated. The shank f of the latch H rests loosely in the slot d of the cover at the edge of the loopwedge and is provided at its upper end with a horizontal angular branch g, whereby the latch may be readily manipulated when the wedge has been raised.
In operation the loop-wedge G is raised as high as possible and the cover is placed upon the crate or box so that the lugs c at its end will enter the socketsain the ledge B. WVhen the wedge Gr is raised, the latch H will rest loosely in the slot cl, and when the end of the box carrying the latch and wedge is placed down upon the box said latch will pass through the slot bin thecasing C and will automatically engage said casing. The loopwedge G is then shoved down and serves to hold the latch in engagement with the casing O, as illustrated.
When it is desired to unfasten the cover, the loop-wedge is raised and the latch disengaged from the casing 0, when the cover may be readily removed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a crate or box having one of its walls recessed and a casing covering the recess and having a slot in its upper edge, of the cover having a verticallydisposed slot, the lockin g-latch loosely mounted in said slot, and theloop-wedge also'loosely mounted in the slot of the cover and adapted to bind against and hold the latch in its locked with the crate or box, substantially as and for position, substantially as and for the purpose the purpose set forth. II set forth. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 1n 2. In a box-fastener, substantially as depresence of two witnesses. 5 scribed, the combination, with a crate or box, SAM S. BARRETT.
a cover, and a loose locking-latch carried by \Vitnesses: the cover, of a loose Wedge adapted to engage A. J. ARTHUR,
the latch to press the sameinto engagement L. A. THOMURE.
