FOLDING BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent N 0. 700,049, dated May 13, 1902.

Be it known that I, .IESS C. HOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the lcounty of Broome and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Folding Box, of which the followingr is a specification. i
The present inventionrelates to folding or collapsible boxes, and in a more .limited asro pect to vthat class commonly known as pyramidal boxes, employed for holding ladies hats and other articleswhich must be protected from dust Vand dirt or are liable to be crushed or injured if left exposed.`
One of the objects of this invention is to greatly simplify the construction of folding boxes and yet provide a structure which may be folded compactly, canbe readily set up, and when inthe latter condition will have all 2o its joints covered, and thus completely exclude the dust from the interior thereof.v

By the present construction after the sides are vsecured together they may remain so and one,v side opened and closed without disturbing the set-up relation of the remaining portions.
The preferred embodiment ofthe invention is fully shown andY described in the accompanying drawings and following specification. The construction set forth, however, is not to be limited to that shown and described, but 4o is open to such changes and modifications as are permitted by the scope of the claims appendedhe'reto.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention the entire box is made of a blank formed from a single sheet of cardboard or analogous material. As shown in Fig. 4, this blank has two parallel side edges and ends, each of which tapers to a centralpoint and has a pair of tapering recesses extendinginwardly from the same, said recesses being directly opposite each other and of the same depth. The end sections thus formed are folded so as to be divided in three equilateral triangles of the same size, said folds being shown in dotted lines. The side portions between the recesses are folded on a line connecting the apices of the recesses. The box thus formed comprises a rectangular bottom 10, tothe opposite edges of which are hinged the tapering or triangular side walls 11. To the side edges of the wall 11 are hinged the side flaps 12, said flaps being triangular in form and of the same size as the wall. One flap of each Wall is provided contiguous to itsin ner edge with a' -slit 13, while the other has a tongue 14. at its outer free corner formed by a slit 15," that extends from the edge of the iap a suit-` able distance into the same. Hinged to the remaining side edges of the bottoni are wings 16, said wings tapering toward their outer or free ends and being preferably trapezoidal in form. Secured to the'outer ends of the ,side walls 11 are suitable fastening devices in the form of ribbons or cords 17. .l
The manner of setting up the box will be readily apparent. The wings 16 and the side walls are bent up, and said side walls are secured together at 'their upper ends by means of the fastening devices 17. The side iaps are then brought together over the wing 16 and willbe located in overlappin g relation. In fact, in the .present structure, because of their size, they will cover the open sides of the box. This will bring the tongues 14 and the slits 13 in coacting relation, so that said tongues maybe inserted in the' slits, and thus detachably secure the overlapping side flaps together. When it is desired to obtain access to the box after having thus been set up, it is only necessary to remove one of the tongues from its slit, thereby releasing both side iiaps and permitting of their being thrown apart, as shown in Fig. 2. said tlap, can then be thrown downwardly and an article inserted or removed through the open side.
It will be seen that an exceedingly simple construction is provided, in which there is a minimum amountof cardboard wasted in cuting the blanks. Furthermore, the structure when set up is very rigid and stable and the joints are completely covered, thereby making it practically dust and dirt proof. The boxing is also veryconvenient to operate when it is desired to place an article therein or remove it therefrom, as the entire structure does not have to be released or collapsed.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art Without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages' of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by means of Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pyramidal folding box, the combination with a bottom, of side walls hinged to the bottom and spaced from each other, said Walls tapering toward their outer ends, side fiaps hinged to the side edges of the Walls and arranged to overlap When set up, and means carried by the flaps for detachably securing together the flaps which are on the corresponding edges of the side walls.
2. In a folding box, the combination with a bottom, of side Walls hinged to thel bottom and spaced from each other, said walls taper- .ing toward their free ends, means for fastening the side walls together at their upper or free ends, side fiaps hinged to the side edges of the Walls, and interlocking means carried by the aps for detachably securing together the fiaps which are on the corresponding edges of the Walls.
3. In a pyramidal folding box, the combination With a polygonal bottom, of side Walls hinged to the opposite side edges of the bottom and tapering toward their free ends, means for securing the upper ends of the opposing side walls together, side iiaps hinged to the side edges of the walls, said flaps being arranged in overlapping relation when the Walls are set up, and means carried by the overlapping iaps for detachably securing them together.
4. In a pyramidal folding box, the combination with a polygonal bottom, of side walls hinged to the opposite side edges of the bottom, and tapering toward their free ends, side Ilaps hinged to the side edges of the Walls, said flaps being arranged in overlapping relation when the walls are set up, one of the side fiaps being provided with slit located contiguous to its hinged edge and the other having a tongue at its outer edge that engages in the slit, whereby the flaps may be detachably secured together.
5. In a pyramidal folding box, the combination with a bottom, of side Walls hinged to the bottom and spaced from each other said walls tapering toward their outer ends, wings also hinged to the bottom between the side walls, said Wings tapering toward their outer ends, fiaps hinged to the side Walls and adapted to be placed in overlapping relation over the wings when said side Walls are set up, and detachably-interlocking means carried by the overlappin g fiaps for detachably securing them together.

In a pyramidal folding box, the combination with a rectangular bottom, of triangular side Walls hinged to the opposite side edges of the bottom, Wings hinged to the bottom between the side walls and tapering toward their outer ends, triangular flaps hinged to the side edges of the Walls and being of the same size thereof, said flaps being adapted to be placed in overlapping relation over the Wings when the Walls are set up, one of the overlapping flaps having a tongue and the other a slit that receives the tongue whereby they are detachably secured together.
