Be it known that I, C. S. BAKER, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough, and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful improvement in Invalid-Bedstead; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art toimake and use thesame, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification', in which- Figure l is a top vie'w of my improved bedstead.

My invention has fo;` its object to improve the constructionjof the invalid-betistoad patented March 27, 18,66, 'Warren S. Hill, inventor, and assigned to me, so as to make it sinjplcr and less expensive in construction and more efficient in operation; and it consists in lowering and raising the foot part ofthe beclstead by toothed segments operated by pinion-wheels; and in the combination of-the toothed4 segments, pinion-wheels, shaft, and pawl with each other, :ind with the movable and stationary parts of the beclstead, the whole bein'g constructed and arrangedas hereinafter more fully described.

The side rails G and D are jointedl as shown in figs. 1 and 2. ll? are toothed segments of circles, the centres of which are piv- -otcd to the stationary parts of the said side rails, and one of the arms or .sides of which is securely attached to the movable parts of said side rails. G is a shaft, which revolves in bearings in the stationary parts of the side rails, and to'4 which are attached pinion-wheels H in such positions that their teeth may mesh into the teeth of the segmentsV One of the ends ofv the shaft G projects through the side rail, and is squared off so as to -receive ,the crank by. which it is operated tov lo'wer and raise the said movable part ofv the bedstead. I is a pawl, which is pivoted to the side rail ofthe bedstead in such a position that it may take hold of the teeth of the pinion-wheel H, and hold the mevablepart of the bedstead stationary in whatever position it may be placed. J is a spring attached to the side rail in such a position that it may hold the pawl I forward against the pinionwheel. A number of the slats E at the head of the bedstead is connected together by short longitudinal bars e,to which are attached the sides'of'the toothed segments K, the centres of which are pvoted tothe side rails of .the bedstead, and which are operated to raise and lower the said 'movable slats by a shaft and pinion-wheelsV in the manner hcreinbefore described.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The construction and arrangement of the foot part hinged to the m'ain portion by means ofthe segments F, and operated by means of the shaft Gr and pinion as herein set forth for the. purpose specified.

2, The construction and arrangement of the pawl I 'and spring J, pivoted to the. side of the main portionof the bedstead, as and for the purpose specified.
