Be it known that I, J oHN GRANenR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springer, in the county of Colfax and Territory of New Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement upon the construction of the gate for which Letters Patent were granted to John Granger April 2l, 1903, N o. 726,048, and the invention further relates to a gate having cables extending from each side and operating ln connection with the gate proper and its support.
The purpose of the invention is to provide latch devices for the gate operated through the medium of the cables, which latch devices are automatically released from their keepers when the gate is opened and automatically engage with the keepers when the gate is closed, the latches being' directly operated by link connection with the mechanism actingdirectly on the gate and operated by the cables. g
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of a gate and the improved latch applied. Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, illustrating' a portion of the main operating mechanism for opening and closing the gates and illustrating the manner in which the cables are connected with this mechanism. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one ofV the latches removed from the gate, and Fig. 4; is a detail side elevation of the central operative mechanism for the gate.
The frame in which the gate is hung consists of an upper longitudinal beam l0, which p serves as a track, the said beam being sup-` ported at and near its ends by uprights l'l and l2. The gate is in two sections A and Ai,

the sections being adapted for movement to and from each other, and the sections of the gate' may be constructed in any suitable or approved manner; but at the outer ends of the gate-sections uprights I3 are secured, which extend upward beyond the track-beam I0, and corresponding. uprights 14 are located between the center of the gate-sections and their inner ends, the-uprights 13 and 14 of each gate-section being connected at the top above the said track-beam 10 by connectingbars 15. Friction-wheels 16 are mounted to turn in the upper portions of the uprights 13 and 14 in any approved manner, it simply being necessary that the said wheels 16 shall occupy such position-as to travel on the upper face of the track-'beam 10.
Keepers 17 extend above the track-beam IO, one-at each side of its center, and these keepers 17 are of substantially inverted-U shape or of strap construction.
VIn connection with the keepers I7 I employ two latches B, one for each gate-section. -Each latch B consists of a horizontal body-section 18 of suitable length, a foot-section 19, adownwardly-extending forward section 20, and a horizontal inner member vor section 2l, terminating in a head 22, having its upper face inclined upwardly yand outwardly. These latches B are secured to the connecting-bars 15 by passing suitable bolts through their foot-sections 19 and through the said bars, and the heads of these latches extend down in front of the inner end portions of the gatesections A and A, the horizontal inner ends of the said latches being at such a plane as to enter the keepers 17. As the gate-sections are closed one in direction of the other in a manner to be .hereinafter described, the heads 22 of the latches ride in the keepers 17 and pass through the keepers, locking the gatesections `in their closed position, as is shown 1n Fig.. l. Vhen the gate-sections are to be .opened, the latches B at their head :portions are depressed, as is shown by dotted4k lines in Fig. l, and this is accomplished through the medium of links 24, operated in a manner to be hereinafter set forth, which links at their lower ends are pivotally connected with upturned brackets 23, secured to the body portions of the latches B at a point between the ends of the body portions, as is shown in Fig. 1.
At the front and at the rear of the gate and its supporting-frame an arch C is erected across the road, and guide-pulleys Q5 are suspended from the overhead portions of the said arches, as is shown in Fig. 2, and cables Q6 pass over these pulleys, the ends of the cables whichare at the arches being provided with suitable handles 27.
The operating mechanism for the sections of the gate may be stated as consisting` of two opposing upwardly-extending arms 28, having their sides facing in the same direction as the sides of the gate-sections, which arms are pivotally connected at their upper ends with the links 2K1 and are pivoted at their lower ends in a box 29, supported upon the trackbeam 10 between the keepers 17. Segmental toothed sections 30 are formed at the lower ends of the said arms, the teeth of which segmental sections engage with the teeth of wheels 31, mounted in the said box 29 in transverse relation to the track-beam 10, and the said wheels are rocked or partiallyT rotated in one or the other direction by upwardly-extend ing connected actuating-bars 32, pivotally united at their upper ends by a horizontal actuating-arm 33. The cables 26 are connected with the ends of the actuating-arm by links 34, as is shown in Fig. 2.
In the operation of the improved gate, the sections being in the closed positions shown in Fig. 1, wherein it will be observed that the latches B are in engagement with the keepers 17, if it is desired .to open the gate upon approaching the gate the cable Q6 at the side of the gate approached is drawn downward, whereupon through the operation of the said operating device the arms 28 are carried outward in opposite directions away from one another, occupying the position shown by dotted lines in Fig'. 1, and as the arms assume this position they press down on the springlatches B and release the heads of the latches from the keepers 1.7. It will be readily understood that as the links Q4 are forced outward by the outward inclination of the arms S28 the sections A and A of the gate are carried away from each other, permitting a through passage through the opening formerly closed by the gate. After the person has passed through this opening and reaches the opposite side of the gate by pulling downward upon the cable 26 at that side the arms 28 are brought to their normal position, carrying the links 24 likewise to their normal position, thus drawing the two sections of the gate together, and as the heads of the latches B engage with the outer edges of the keepers 17 the said heads ride under the said keepers, and after clearing the keepers the elasticity of the metal forming the latches carries the heads upward to a locking position with the inner i edges of the keepers, as is shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In sliding gates, a gate in two sections having sliding movement on a frame, springlatches carried by the gate, keepers for the latches located on the frame, and operative mechanism for the gate carried by the frame, including upright arms and means for carrying the arms to and from each other, and links pivoted to the arms and to the latches, as described.
2. In sliding' gates, a frame, a gate in two sections, which sections are adapted for movement to and from each other, friction-rollers for the sections of the gates, adapted to travel on the said frame, keepers secured to the said frame, spring-latches attached to the upper portions of the said sections of the gate above the said frame, each latch being provided with a horizontal section having an inclined head, the said heads being adapted to pass through the keepers and the horizontal sections to engage with the keepers, an operating device for the sections of the gate, including upwardly-extending arms adapted for movement to and from each other, intermediate mechanism in gear connection with the arms, means for operating` the said gears from oppositel sides of the gate, and links pivotally connected with the upper portions of the said arms and with the said latches, as and for the purpose described.
3. In sliding gates, a frame, a gate in two sections movable to and from each other, standards extending from the sections of the gate above the frame, a connecting-bar for the standards of each section of the gate, frictionrollers carried by said standards and adapted to travel upon the upper portion ofthe frame, spring-latches attached at their outer ends to the said connecting-bars of the gate-standards, which latches extend downward at the inner portions of the inner standards of the gatesections, being provided at their lower portions with horizontal members and inclined heads forming a portion of said members, which horizontal members and inclined heads are adapted to pass through the said keepers,
