GARDlNG-MACHlNE AT-TACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 699,467, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed December 18,1901. fierial No. 86,3 90. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER D. INGRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Penacook, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, haveinvented a new and Improved Oarding-Machine Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved carding-machine attachment for preventing any of the stock from passing over the ends of the cylinder and going to waste and causing all of the stock in the lap to pass to the doifer to insure formation of a lap of uniform thickness throughout its width.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation ofthe improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of part of the improvement on the line 8 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of the same on the line 4. 4 of Fig. 1.
A carding-machine of usual construction is mounted on a suitable frame A, in which is journaled a cylinder B, operating in conjunction with workers 0, cleaners D, and a fancy E in the usual manner for carding the fiber of the lap previous to its passage to the dotfer. The attachment consists of pairs of revoluble guards F for each pair of workers and cleaners and a pair of larger revoluble guards G for the last worker and fancy. The guards F are located at the ends of the cylinder B and the ends of the corresponding workers, cleaners, and fancy to prevent any stock from passing over the cylinder and becoming 10st. The guards F and G are preferably in the form of metal disks having hubs, of which the hubs of the guards F are secured by setscrews or other means to the shafts D of the cleaners (see Fig. 4) to revolve with the same. The hubs of the guards G are secured by setscrews or other means to a transverse shaft G, journaled in suitable bearings arranged on brackets H, attached to the frame A. On the shaft G is secured a pulley I, over which passes a belt I, connected with a pulley 1 secured on the shaft 0 of the last worker (l, as plainly indicated in the drawings. Thus when the cardingmachine is in operation the several guards F and G are revolved. By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the guards F are somewhat larger in diameter than the cleaners D and extend over or overlap the ends of the cylinder B and the corre* sponding workers 0 to prevent any of the stock from passing endwise over the cylinder and becoming wasted, and in a like manner the guards G extend over the space at the ends of the last worker O, the-fancy E, and the cylinder 13 to prevent loss of stock at this point.
By the arrangement described the lap is not thickened or frayed at the edges, owing to loss of stock, as in machines heretofore constructed; but the lap is kept uniform in thickness to insure a sliver of high quality. It will further be seen that a carding-machine provided with my improvement need not be stopped very often for removing the waste stock from the machine, as'is so often the case in carding-machines heretofore constructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A carding-machine attachment, comprising revoluble guards for closing the spaces at the ends of the cylinder, workers and cleaners, as set forth.
2. Acarding-Inachine attachment, comprising a pair of revoluble guardsfor closing the spaces at the ends of the cylinder, the last worker and the fancy, as set forth.
3. A carding-machine attachment, comprising a pair of revoluble guards for closing the spaces at the ends of the cylinder, the last worker and the fancy, and means for rotating ghe said guards from the last worker, as set orth.
4. Acarding-machine attachment, com.prisname to this specification in the presence of ing revoluble guards for closing the spaces at two subscribing Witnesses. I the ends of the cylinder workers and cleaners, the said guards being" in the form of disks CHESTER INGRAHAM 5 secured to the shafts of the cleaners, as set Witnesses:
forth. RALPH H. SHERBURNE,
In testimony whereof I have signed my HORACE B. SHERBURNE.
